DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Goblin dynasty

Goblins ruling Dwarfs? Well, that is new. You might not get any annoying orders to produce one million floodgates.
Reminds me of a certain elf.

My Roc training program failed so miserably.-snip- Then he encountered the lasher. A normal lasher. With an ({iron whip}). He lashed the beast into the head with his ({iron whip}), bruising the muscle, jamming the skull through the brain and tearing the brain.

well, whip regularly kill dwarfs wearing a steel helmet, what did you expect. Also, the roc might have been quite young.

The closest I got for the name was in goblin: Slalsto LilacRoot HoaryTwig

So the goblins name the creatures? Interesting. No, he was nearly 300 years old and could kill a giantess and a minotaur without taking a scratch. I didn't realize the goblin was a lasher, I simply pitted the roc against random creatures I caught in cagetraps. He obliterated everything from minotaurs to giants without a single scratch. Those whips are simply too deadly, you just can't face them in close combat. I have them exterminated with extreme prejudice and a few crossbow bolts.

Dragon pillboxes are amazing, unless Gobbo McArcher arrives.

Chain him in the throne room, I say! Impress those feeble diplomats :D

My Roc training program failed so miserably. First I tried to pit the Roc against a normal Goblin. Apparently that copper sword was too hardcore and he died miserably. Then I savescummed, dangerroomed the Roc to uber legendary fighter level. In the arena he took down a minotaur, a giantess (with a wierd fps drop from 45 into the single digits) and several goblins. Then he encountered the lasher. A normal lasher. With an ({iron whip}). He lashed the beast into the head with his ({iron whip}), bruising the muscle, jamming the skull through the brain and tearing the brain.

I think I caught one in a wooden cagetrap, so it probably doesn't matter. Afterwards you can shoot him from a safe distance, but my personal favourite is taming him and then chaining him somewhere neat.

Ah so that piece of information about the dug out tiles is probably wrong. I can't remember where I read that. The dwarfs have gone artifact making again, they were probably just a bit lazy. Hooray for the cacao wood statue and the aluminum flask. Can I force some member of my military to equip that flask? Probably not :/

The title says it all. Is it possible? I have 21 artifacts and the ones that are really useful seem to be a steel crossbow (my marksdwarf squadleader goes "pew pew" with his shiny sniper rifle :D), an obsidian floodgate for my duke who conviniently likes floodgates and a green glass coffin (this is dwarf fortress, not snow white, armok damn it!) for the royal tomb. I haven't seen artifacts for a year now, and I read that the total number of artifacts is related to the number of tiles, that are dug out. So, should some of those granite bracelets and gabbro rings, the precious diorite toy boat and perhaps even the most valued nickel scepter get lost accidentally, would my dwarfs start to crank out new artifacts?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: From "Beard" on the wiki

:D I have a rather long chinbeard which I can braid or style a la jack sparrow. There is nothing like a beard with black wooden pearls in it.
I wonder why people always connect beards to being unhygienic and filthy. It is probably all Gilette propaganda.
One runs into wierd problems like beard-split ends and stuff. And random people touching my beard. Oh god, I hate those.

dfhack
fixmerchants

then you get a guild representative again and can request materials from the humans. They can be tedious though

Thanks, I will try that! I only have to wait until they are tired of going to war with me. I hope they like exceptional human bone amulets :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fortress Design
« on: April 19, 2012, 06:09:27 pm »
I seriously admire those neatly planned forts. I make it all up as I dig down. I dig into the hill, to have the trading depot inside and a 3 tiles wide stairway down. Everything I need gets clustered somehow around it. Which leads to a rather chaotic design, I have empty rooms where I always think "why exactly did I order those to be dug out?". And the hauling jobs and traffic jams are annoying. But it works somehow, and that is what counts :D

I had a glass beast spewing out large amounts of web. You can make some really fancy silk out of the webs. On the other hand, I am kind of sad, that I am not competent enough to build forgotten beast silk farms like mentioned in another thread.
Currently I am at war with the humans and I do not know why  :(
That is somehow sad, since the humans are my only source of platinum, and I want more platinum. They usually only bring one bar though. I guess, I will never see a platinum artifact warhammer.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: More than two Forgotten Beasts per year
« on: April 19, 2012, 05:26:53 pm »
That sounds much. In my current fortress I had two forgotten beasts (thoses things made of glass and spewing web everywhere) and I am in year 17. Or do dragons, rocs, minotaurs and werecreatures count? I tamed and bred the rocs, tamed the dragon and chained him in the throne room (instill some fear in the diplomats, I think) and the minotaur is waiting in his cage until I decide what to do with him. Perhaps he should fight to the death with one of my precious birds in the arena.

Press u and go to the units screen. There you might see, if any invaders are actually alive.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Difficulties with the clothing system
« on: April 06, 2012, 06:54:12 pm »
I tried the vanilla version, but I still have the bug. So it is not connected to Phoebus or DfHack.

might want to go back to the older version, make a ton of clothing, then update. Or go to your save raws and change [PET_EXOTIC] to [PET] on rocs
What would the [PET_EXOTIC] to [PET] actually do? I can tame the rocs, my civilisation knows already some facts about them, I can train them for war or hunting and probably with a nest box, they will lay eggs. I am just a bit reluctant to let those beasts out, after the tantrum spiral, matters are quite instable. Having rocs reverted to "wild" rampaging around is not in my plans. Sadly, going back to the old version would require an old backup save.

Just unforbid the ungodly amounts of goblin trash out on the surface and let your dwarfs happpily pick out used loincloths and old socks to wear.
I think, I am overly tidy :D I alway melt everything down as fast as possible (I have several magma smelters and smelting activated for a load of dwarves) and the rest gets dumped and atom smashed. So my stocks screen stays informative.

yeah, you can upgrade a .04 save to .05, but when i was doing a succession game, i was unable to open a .05 save in .04
Exactly my problem.

The Tantrum Spiral was survivable, I ended up with about 70 dwarves. Sadly many useful ones are dead, like my legendary carpenter, legendary armorer, the soldiers, those pump operators that would have been soldiers, my 7 starting dwarves, my duke, his escort and children (Do I get a new one? He isn't actually useful, but this is about immersion and challenge) and the whole justice system. Good thing I can defend myself only with weapon traps.
I had only 20 empty graves (note to self: in the future, plan bigger graveyards) and I carved out a big hall with 200 coffins and statues related to the big "no-Pants" incident of 446. (Urist McUrist finds his lack of +pants+ disturbing.)
Should have build that mist generator...
The negative thoughts are: "very embarrassed to be uncovered" which means no pants "embarrassed to have no shirt" "embarrased to have no shoes"
The remaining dwarves seem to wear an excessive amount of clothing. I thinky they try to cover every layer, so they have socks, shoes, mittens, caps, trousers, tunics, hoods and cloaks. Regarding those giant bat leather cloaks... yes, they are evenly spread out. Now, EVERYONE is wearing giant bat leather cloaks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jgE-lrfZ3k
I think I am going to keep the fortress, just now about 30 immigrants arrived "despite the danger". Will I get a new duke?
By the way, how strong are the rocs? I wanted them to be my airforce that makes the elves fall to their knees and stuff (seriously the most damn important event in this world seems to be the taming of the giant wombats by the elf eleana talonscorched, this is on every engraving and on every goddam statue. Wombats... Pah!). But I derail to much. I pitted a roc against a single goblin swordsman with (copper breastplate) and (-copper sword-). And the goblin literally slaughtered the poor creature while suffering no wounds at all. The roc was bleeding like mad and has until now only healed to "everthing dented" and the goblin had to be put down.

tl. dr. someone make a "nudist colony" mod. Please.

Well I still have 82 giant bat leather cloaks (i needed those because of reasons) and some hoods and mittens and one legendary leatherworker but, including children, I have 242 dwarves screaming for clothes. Until I have set up my sweatshops, the tantrum spiral is already starting. My main problem seems to be the children, those get mad really fast, even if they steal my military's hoods and mittens. (Seriously? Children running around with masterful leather mittens? Why?)
