DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bronze colossus; Gods incarnate?

Who knows. They can apparantly cut it's limbs off, which considering how light Adamantine is means that the blades must have a goddamn monomolecular edge, since it takes a serious buttload of sharpness to cut solid bronze.

Considering that adamantine is forged from raw adamantine threads, which given its other properties may well BE monomolecular wire, I'm thinking the ultimate weapon would be an adamantine WHIP.

Think about it. An almost invisible wire that can slice through anything... throw a small weight on the end so you can actually lash it around and you'd have the ultimate cow cheese slicer.

Spar with THAT. I dare you.

a bit off-topic, but related in terms of alternative names.

i was fighting off some skeletal foxes and i noticed something fly off from one of them, its right eye tooth. i thought it was a typo in the raws, but after searching google i found that it's just another term for the canine tooth.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canine_tooth

Teeth seem to break off quite often--probably because when a bite attack causes a wrestling grip, the gripping body part is considered to be a SINGLE TOOTH. Also kobolds seem to have a habit of grabbing foxes by single teeth while in combat... at least in arena.

Err...what? I searched and didn't find it. I checked the raws and everything.

Well, the wiki's claim on it makes it sound as if it's a forgotten beast. As they're randomized, I don't think such a thing would show up in the raws. Then again, it could just be someone trying to make a wild goose chase for a being that dosen't exist.

...which would make sense, seeing as a being made of dwarf lung was speculated on waaaay back when Toady One first announced tissue materials and the like being implemented.

This is a slightly less obvious/clear thing than most of the others, but I figure I'd mention it anyway:

All metals (save adamantine) have the exact same MAX_EDGE. This may or may not be intentional, but is certainly pretty weird. You're not exactly going to feasibly hammer gold into the same edge as steel.

Gold leaf can be made literally paper-thin. Though I'd imagine it won't HOLD an edge as well as steel. Or quarry bush leaf.

There's an interesting thought--make gold malleable into gold leaf, which can then be used in dwarven recipes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_leaf

It would be even more dwarven to make alcohol with gold in it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldschl%C3%A4ger

Also, for anyone who happens to stumble across "Elf Sweetbread" and wonder how Toady messed up so badly as to allow creatures to become pastry: it is their testicles.

Thyroid and pancreas, actually.

Ah, the things you learn from the wisdom of Hannibal Lecter... ;)

He punched my skull through my brain.

You mean... he beat you to death with your own skull? That doesn't seem physically possible! ;D

Carps have been turned into normal fish in DF2010, though. It's sad to see that I cant flop up on land, latch on to their throat, and drag them back into the rivers. It's a fairly one-sided fight, even with a legendary biter as a carp fighting a peasant in a thong. I suppose it's more fair to the new players. I'll have to make a new RAW for the carp that gives it a fang, or a jaw so muscular it can gum your limbs off you.

As for the sea monster.. I don't know what the hell happened, but I flopped up on land, grabbed a dwarf by a back tooth, and flung it. It sailed off the water platform arena into the lava arena.. striking a wall and, literally, cleaving it in half. I don't think throwing was meant to be so powerful.

How'd you throw something with a bite grab? As a fox, the only options available when I grab something in my mouth are shake and release.

Zerg rushing does seem to eliminate the threat. 142 super-legendary dwarves in steel armor wielding steel battle axes  managed to mangle everything on a BC and lop off all hands and feet. Thing was... it was still alive, but its attacks couldn't penetrate their armor. No dead dwarves.

Bronze Collosi are the new carp. Which were the new elephants.

Unskilled, naked cat
vs.
Super-skilled fox in adamantine breastplate, adamantine greaves, adamantine helm, and with all four of his widdle paws covered in adamantine high boots...

The cat somehow managed to rip one of my ears off and break one of my teeth before I finally chewed him to death.

Post-battle analysis:
1) There really should be "throw" options when wrestling someone with a bite lock on them.
2) Wrestling grabs involving teeth should preferentially grab or be grabbed by the entire jaw, maybe? I have this visual of a kobold snagging his hand on one tooth and somehow using that to THROW ME.
3) Shouldn't helms cover the ears? Especially on a creature for whom the ears are on top of the head? Not that I'm complaining that an adamantine helm fits on a fox AT ALL, but...
4) My tail and throat also got cut open; I can understand not specially implementing protection for creatures with tails since the focus is on dwarves and other tailless humanoids, but throat wounds are life-threatening enough that there ought to be an option to forge a gorget or something.

Post-battle suicide: Jumped off the tower in the lower-right corner where the epic fox/cat-fight happened... got stunned and broke off my left eye tooth, but aside from my mouth cut splitting open further and tearing an artery in the muscle, I didn't get any more heavy injuries. Limped on over to the other tower where I could see a bridge across the canal with a greater height difference. Still didn't smash myself to chunky fox bits. Dropped into the water to try to drown myself... but it was only one tile deep. ...And there was no way to crawl back out of the water, so the arena ended with the fox alive and no way for him to suicide. Aw.

Arena mode, built a highly skilled fox to fight a kobold... without realizing the kobold also had those skill presets. Result: One strangled fox.

Tried again with higher-skilled foxes, eventually armored in an adamantine breastplate... results: three more strangled foxes.

Eventually realized I can copy multiple creatures and have them all on the same side. Result: Six heavily armored foxes and one bloody pile of kobold.

Decided to see if this kind of zerg rush would work on bigger creatures. Result: 49 foxes variously torn to pieces, incinerated, or thrown against the wall to splatter, one dragon with a dented eye, and one fox that somehow survived being hurled across the canal to where the dragon didn't want to path over to it.

My biggest frustration: When designating up/down staircases to sink a shaft deep down (Too Deep), I have to designate every layer individually; I can't just start a rectangle on one layer and zip down five or twenty-five layers and designate all tiles in between as staircases.

Yes, I know that's exceedingly dangerous. That's the whole point--I mined down to the Hidden Fun Stuff, after all. But it was over a hundred and fifty layers deep!!

13
Digging too deep... or trying to! I've dug down to -154, which is -10 on the lower black numbers, and am encountering semi-molten rock.

Not warm stone, which cancels digging designations with a message. Semi-molten Rock, which cancels digging designations silently and is probably undiggable entirely. So far every square I've revealed with my stairways on level -155 has been semi-molten, so I can't dig any deeper yet--I'm making exploratory shafts and rooms to try to figure out if it's possible to dig deeper or if the whole level is semi-molten and I've dug down to the Mohorovičić discontinuity. I believe that would probably qualify as Too Deep, demons or no demons.

OH GOOD GRIEF. No wonder I didn't find the adamantine--it's in the MIDDLE of the magma sea!! The semi-molten rock must be how the game deals with the lower reaches of a large magma pocket--warm stone *might* let magma in, semi-molten rock *WILL* let in PRESSURIZED magma, and so it doesn't even let you CONSIDER it. Not even the most suicidal of dwarves would willingly melt his pick in that mess.

The adamantine's placement, however, gives me just enough room to sink a shaft through the magma sea that I know won't strike semi-molten rock.

I hope.

Good news, everyone! There's already a shaft through it! And I've found some glass demons and a chickadee monster!

Bad news, everyone. I don't think we're going to make it!
