DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Most anti-climactic death?

Going swimming and becoming encased by ice.

Now, imagine that with a Necromancer Vampire trying to push their Naga Necromancer companion across a river, and you have a pretty good idea of what happened to my most successful adventurer up til that point.

I can't wait to see the forum threads popping : "my legendary adventurer got grabbed by a roc and now I'm 50z above ground, what do I do" :D
Climb up and ride it, obviously.
Then piledrive it into the ground.
Grab a tree branch at the last second.
Good idea; that way you'll get your arm ripped off just before you splatter on the ground.
Only in Dwarf Fortress, gentleurists.
Personally, I would recommend climbing up onto the Roc, snapping one of its wings, and piloting the creature to it's oh-so-messy demise. Try and land upright, that way you can at least train up as a crutchwalker if you break your legs.

You may need to be travelling with someone before you can claim lordship, from what I've seen.

Found a random tomb. Wandered in.

Got diced by the mummy. This is why you respect your ancestors, kids.

I did something similar as an orc, once. I then found out that mithril armor means nothing to them.

But, as the quote goes, "[...] beyond that my experience mirrors yours."

Rivers are probably the second most irritating thing in adventure mode, behind needing to leave the travel screen to eat every time.

Even more than having to exit a dungeon/keep/camp to travel even if everything dangerous is dead?

First, second and third on that list are all pretty close, to be honest. I'd put the dungeon/camp/keep problem at two, with rivers at four, personally -- companions running blindly into a horde of the living dead when you tell them "STAY" is much more frustrating for me.

Sign language uses mostly the same regions of the brain as spoken language.

Some mushrooms can expel spores with a puff of air, maybe these can modulate that function to speak. Which means, whenever one speaks ...

Here at Bay12 we excel at Theoretical Biology. Need to know the value of Merbone? Check. Need to know the density of a thrown Fluffy Wambler? Check. Need to know how a walking Mushroom can theoretically talk? Check.

Here at Bay12 we make Newton our bitch and Darwin suck our dicks.

And that's when we're not making them roll over in their graves and harvesting the rotation as a source of perpetual energy.

So the vampire wizard was doing quite well, up until I froze in the river. Yeah, I didn't know about flash-freezing until that. Quite !Fun! indeed, if somewhat anticlimactic. I was trying to use some Dwarven Physics to move my Naga Necromancer companion across when the freeze happened, so there's that. Quite the kill chart, in any case.

I decided to gen a new world, and oh boy, this one is wacky. So fist off, there's a demon in legends who is actually dead. Do you know how he died? He fell in battle. Against a yak. He probably didn't want to explain that one to the god that helped him escape.

But anyways, I spawned in as an elf of minor importance, bearing the name of Faenor, a cobalt sword, a mythril shield, and not much of note besides. I tried to find a nearby temple, you know, get some vampirism, and so on. I found the keep instead, and two companions in the rooms underneath. I headed back to the surface, saw one run off, and then saw a message about the king getting attacked.

I walked off of the outer wall a few minutes later as the new King. I'm still baffled.

I took a different approach on my subsequent attempts. After losing to an overload of !FUN! in the engine (read: it crashed), I decided to go for a different tower, and a different set of powers. I checked the legends viewer, and found a nearby slab containing the Dark Arts -- Raise Revenant, Heartbleed, Organ Failure, and Blindness, as it turns out. I also realized how bad of an idea it is to take [ALIVE] companions with you when trekking to such a tower. I think Mina is dead... Henceforth, I named my organization in memory of her loss -- The Order of Sorrows. My first act is currently demonstrating my immense power by single-handedly razing a Kobold hillock. I kinda feel bad for the little guys, but this is only the beginning. I am aware of multiple towers, which I shall trek to, and gain the secrets within. Then, when I feel ready, I shall first kill that damned frost wyrm in Epousecorridors, and then I shall see about raiding the four vaults of my world.

Failing, I'll end up dying to someone in an epic duel. At least I'll have the highest kill total of anything in my world first. For [GLORY] and [MAT:BLOOD]!

I've barely started, also - this all happened in the span of around 20 minutes since I spawned. Gonna try to get to the bottom of just what the hell went on here.

Hmmm... sounds like the perfect excuse to roleplay as a detective. I had something similar happen, once. Except, in my case, it was lag city. I was an Uruk, and had just found the local tower, with the intent to explore it find some nice gear before setting out on an adventure. Then I noticed all the stray animals attacking the animal tamer. At this point, I made the mistake of trying to remove all of the culprit animals, but there must have been so many in the tower that my frames decided to take a trip down to the circus.

MEANWHILE...

So I found the slabs. One for geomancy, and one for necromancy. I gave them to my companion, but I have no way to know if she read them. Anyways, I'm thinking of turning the current head necro into a pile of mush and taking over the tower for myself. Should I do it?

Update: Armok is was not appeased with my bloodshed, for some reason, as Dwarf Fortress decided to crash. At least I had a save from earlier. Unfortunately, I need to go find the tower again. Time to slay eighty-some walking corpses all over again...

Meanwhile, I finally generated a new world with Masterwork that fits my style. I promptly found the local temple, and Ol, wise and mighty wind god that he is, blessed me with vampirism. I have since gone on to kill several random individuals, and, much to my amusement, something that I can only assume was a night troll wielding a copper mallet in one of its four arms. I also found a platinum bow, but that's not important yet.

The full orchicalcum gear probably helped there, as well as my decision to start throwing battle axes. My succubus companion ran off, for whatever reason, but at least she was alive at the end of the fight. Quite unlike the troll.

I was also rather disappointed by the fact that I'm pretty sure I was unable to decorate my weapon with Night Troll bone rings. I could have made an amulet, but it's just not the same anymore. My plan from here is to use my incredible Vampiric prowess, and my lovely assistant, to become a Vampire Wizard. Or a Vampire Cult Leader, if I can figure out how to do that.

I can recall doing the classic mod of being able to play as a bronze colossus in Adventure mode. I then proceeded to kill a few minotaurs and giants, and then found another colossus.
I killed it bashing in it's head with my bronze fist, so I was pretty surprised when that happened.

More recently, I had an adventurer who kept getting ambushed by giant saltwater crocodile recruits. They must have had it out for him or something. They weren't particularly good in battle, however.

Currently, however, I'm mucking about with Masterwork's item creation system. I'm going to try and get my adventurer a nice, strong sword, and get my companion a good polearm. Then I'll go kill something massive, in the most metal way I can think of. That, or both of them will die incredibly in the process.

Update: He died horribly.

So, if they're called "Forgotten Beasts", why do we know of them?

Head name: Gravitas
Color: Extremely Dark Metallic Blue.
Elemental Breath Weapon: (Before I pick one, what do "Energy" and "Shadow" entail?)
Personality: Occasional Large Ham. Pragmatic. Genre Savvy. Tactical. Hot-Blooded sometimes. Quite Random, when he wants to be.

Okay, done.  Smak is a wonderful name for a big dumb orc with a giant steam-powered hammer.

Navatar, you have 57 kills with 30 of them notable. Omega has 62 with 43 notable ones.  For comparison, the unclaimed blademaster ronin has 50 kills with 41 notable ones.  You are falling behind, Nav.

DAAAYUUUM.

If he dies in combat, I'd like another Ork. Preferably named "The Ashlord".

he might be around till the end, like HolisticDetective from over in Headshoots.

Thanks guys!  My only regret is that now I have to wait a week before drawing another.

In a wonderful coincidence, a forgotten best actually attacked my fortress last night.  Less fortunately, it's just a giant three-eyed tick and pretty boring overall.

So instead, here's some manner of hideous garbage-creature from Legends!

So..... this then?
The heck did you just make me look at.
