From reading the rules, full-Balance build would be very durable (it is harder to gain Eye stat), but not quite fun for the crowds

”Liel, do you perhaps have some information on methods of ancient defense against such tampering? I think it is better asked at medical facility, but we seem to be quite far from there.”

While speaking his mind about close brush with death, Ulkas felt the surrounding Mind Field. It was weak yet uniform, stretching over a vast distance. He could easily filter it to see better through the fog, but what reaction would more direct opposition yield?

”I think that before hunting down the cause of disturbance, it would be prudent to test if we are indeed trapped here, or it is misconception imagined by lesser undead. The fog that surrounds us acts as dispersed Mind Field and most creatures can barely affect it at all despite its thin nature. I’ve tested on small samples, but it should be possible for me to dominate this field in our surroundings and use the lapse to teleport upwards. At very least, it should reveal if there are more components to the trap other than guile and misdirection.”

Mentally dominate surroundings and proceed with teleport. See how fog - and its master - reacts to the approach. If successful, scout the lands from above - it might be possible to send mind probes and use Astrosa eyes.

(Thanks, but I'm still going to try to destroy essence.  From Squacks point of view, it makes creatures insane with hunger.  Sure, they're more intelligent about how they hunt and kill each other, but they're still going to do it.  And defeating these other star gods should certainly be possible... he's killed creatures above his level before, and with good information (and some non-essence based training), it might be possible, either inside or outside the essence system.

Maybe it doesn't need to all die, but what's left should be in the world, and only in the world, instead of making creatures out here crazy.)
(Sure, would be interesting to see. A pity Squacks is not interested in history and does not know the golden age the Essence led to before Catastrophe happened. Though, if golden age was prequel to farming and it was only framed as an outsider attack…

Also. Getting rid of Essence while having soul built upon it is basically impossible. Soul & mind are somewhat interconnected and getting rid of Essence collapses soul with mind soon to follow (see: Catastrophe).

There are at least one option to get rid of Essence in particular - embrace Corruption, it is not tied with ‘star gods’ as far as I know - but world itself would view you as cancer to be destroyed.

Another option might be solidifying the soul and transferring into Essence-less body, but it has many problems and I’m not sure it is possible to do without huge problems with mind at very least.)

Quote from: Ulkas
“Liel, now that I have rested, what can you tell us about the opponent we have faced at the military facility? I have gathered that it once was a Core, one which turned its facility into an extension of itself. Both perfected and yet somehow… Even more twisted from that seeming perfection.”

"Xatares is grateful... and apologies for inadvertently sending us toward a death trap. This situation fell far outside our expectations, a core corruption is unacceptable... and shouldn't have been allowed to happen. We surmise the failsafes failed due to some unknown reason. Rogue Core Ersenas has been flagged as an Enemy. We have been able to determine it willingly used the emergency beacon to lure in Levem rescue efforts, in order to ambush them and appropriate their ichor. By doing so, it openly made itself an enemy of Levem."

”We should return to hunt it down… But only after we get some defense from its ability to affect souls. Was it something unique to Mad Core, or it just used what all Cores have to twisted purpose?”

“Astrosa, much thanks for the wait and information. I feel like my mind has recovered adequately and without lingering issues. I should probably need to get a better grasp on myself before attempting something similar again. For now, I’m feeling traces of mentality in the fog, so I’ll attempt to deduce what is affecting these lands. We may also travel around a bit to find some weak monsters to control and evolve - I assume you met no worthy opponents while I you were gathering information?”

Not all monsters are suitable for evolution and some may be more important as information providers than snacks, just as Astrosa proved. Ulkas smiled happily, glad that his partner was getting sharper and more proficient in handling information. It was a rather nice development.

Check out the fog via Mind Field and Analysis. Take care not to overload the mind and see if recovery went smoothly. If there are some weak monsters - see if we could evolve them like we did before meeting Ambition.

(Mind having a bit of a plot recap, Sarrak?  I remember there was some reason it was really bad to let essence die, but not all the details.)
(Once upon a time, there were ‘star gods’. Most nameless, but one had name and thus, grand ideas, creating the world we live in. Then, creatures came to be. My ideas on the purpose of creation range from selfish benevolence (by living and expressing themselves, creatures enriched both themselves and their creator) to eldritch farming practices (creatures having fulfilling lives is a byproduct of Essence enrichment process).

It went for a long time, while other ‘star gods’ were going mad with hunger they did not fully realize at first. Then, Catastrophe occurred. Basically, an attack from others/foreign entity, where our creator used its Essence to retaliate. Sacrificing its creation/farm, but not fully - and possibly infecting other ‘star gods’ with itself, for they have used its Essence to actualize themselves and got Names.

Essence is the Blood of Creator. And possibly traces of its very soul - which allows it to support our own souls, making progress possible (most probably, Essence has greatly intelligence development in creatures, otherwise there would not be so many races).

Full disappearance of Essence equals death of the world itself, which is partly/fully our creator - and full access to what remains for other ‘star gods’, who are even now trying to mess with inhabitants to gain trickles of Essence.)

TLDR: World is using Essence as a crutch for sloppy/intentional world-building by its ‘star god’ creator and it is absolutely indispensable for its functioning as of now. World without Essence might be possible, but this one can’t be it. Essence is its soul, immune system and replication cycle.

[Ulkas is in Easenval's Deadland as I suspected? Looking forwards to seeing 'Ferratus' again.]
[Yep, feels like Armor has its own dominion now, ruling with an all-consuming greed. I have a feeling that dice & chance are trying to use demons like cleaners for world’s messes… Though, considering that they have kinda enabled armor to power up on villagers in first season - maybe karma?

Also, your party is kinda unlucky, hopefully luck would turns its face on you and we learn what this whole situation is about.]

Rest… Sounded good. Browsing jumbled memories of the fight was still painful, so Ulkas relaxed back into Astrosa’s lap with a content smile, letting his mind recover while marveling at luxurious accommodation.

Rest well, enjoy and recover.

This was… Bad. With his theories reaffirmed, Ulkas did not have enough time to think about possibilities.

(Astrosa. Fire Collapser as we fly. Liel, we go towards unstable one.)

While he could not quite get a hang on their enemy abilities, messing with it further was -hopefully- within his reach.

Mess with Mad Core mind, optimally supplying it false information. Try translocating before its spell reaches completion. Gather illusions into three rough clusters, so we would have a visual screen for ourselves and two decoy targets.
If Core changes the spell mid-way - react accordingly.
If translocation fails or takes more time - concentrate on Violent Mana Absorbtion & messing with Core mindscape to lessen the effects.

”Plan? We fucking RUN. I will explain, but this THING is beyond our current abilities to defend against.”

Ulkas cursed bitterly and took flight, checking that his companion follows.

“It is a stage 8 monster. This, we could deal with. It is a powerful mage twice-amplified by ancient technology. This, we could survive using our artifacts. It is an insane Core of military facility that has turned its defenses inside out into its own armor, creating a hulking overly weaponized fortress. This, we could potentially crack with proper tactics and time. But it has also INTEGRATED SOULS of other invaders into itself. This ability? I can’t defend you from this, Astrosa. And have only a slim chance to protect myself. We could still fight, but I can’t risk everything for naught!”

“Liel, any markers nearby where we can safely lose it?”

Prepare to counter spells of Mad Core - or to utilize Illusions as diversions to distract it from following us. Fleeing by gaining altitude is preferable as it should have already analyzed Translocation magic used. Still, it remains a viable option - just need to make sure it leads where I want and suffers not interruptions, a smooth transition akin to what went in Sateris Aline transportation.

”Understood. Deliciously dangerous opponent, but perhaps not at the top of its game. It’s mind is similarly patchwork or hivemind, a chaotical choir of broken voices.”

“As it tried to fight in enclosed terrain, either it is close-medium melee combatant, possesses few options to pursue opponents or has devastating area-of-effect abilities that grow weaker in the open. Best case is it being slow, but we can’t underestimate it’s cunning. I am not certain if mind tricks would work on such mind, but field illusions should still have an effect.”

“I would try to close off it’s escape towards facility with Liel’s help while you use Shatterers to blast the pit open - they won’t have any effect against such opponent anyway. In case it has many nasty surprises we could not counter - I would suggest retreating for now. We can grow stronger still, it won’t. So, please, until we are certain we have an upper hand, don’t go all out?”

While Astrosa opens the trap, control second gate with Liel’s help and close it so that abomination does not flee back into facility. If it tries - Warp magic it closer to us in the air above the pit - perfect target for Collapsers.

”Glad you agreed, Astrosa. This amalgamation tried to rearrange the battlefield in its favor, thus I decided to configure it to favor us instead. As well as gather more information while doing so. I have already gotten some glimpses into its nature, but surely you saw more?”

“Let’s come out for a bit. Our new friend certainly does not wish to fight fair… But we have mining equipment.”

Ulkas chuckled at the thought. Having to turn back from mystery grated a bit (certainly more for Astrosa), yet he would not live long without realizing that they were not the strongest beings around. Too many deadly situations were resolved with diplomacy - but current one did not feel like it.

”I am very interested to it’s reaction to our move. If it is guardian, however broken - it should sally out, as others did. If not…”

Retreat from the Pit with Translocation. Check enemy disposition and what closed the pit. Check if our mining equipment would do the job of coming back.

”To summarize, there is something there. Either an automatic Essence-less defense or a monster proficient in hiding itself or using interference. This being military facility, either could be potentially very dangerous, especially if fought at their ‘home’.

“Beacon feeling ‘off’ could mean something as harmless as ancient decoy or as dangerous as deliberate trap… I’d say we should move down toward the gate and check further before deciding if we should risk going into the maw of the beast. I am not too concerned about danger itself, but interference may block more than just information gathering.”

Come downwards to check what this is about. Keep cautious, for while we have many failsaves, world is always proficient at deadly surprises.

”Any hints on what we might expect to find here? Perhaps at least a status of facility? As neither myself or Astrosa see anything off, it might be overly cautious, but by now I have developed a healthy respect for Ancient technologies.”

Send elementals first, just in case. You never know when ancient facility is trapped and/or inhabited by invisible threats.

Making sure that neither of their trio sensed anything out of ordinary, Ulkas hummed. That was unexpected problem. He would be fine to slowly comb through the island if needed, but it would mean the loss of invaluable time. Mayhaps he needed a different perspective?

”Liel, do you have any of the ancient maps or other hints? I’ll try to check out the signal, but tearing through the ground is low on the list of priorities.”

Control rock elementals to amplify search efforts. Maybe their mindlessness would be a boon for some traps are intended to fool the minds of onlookers. Even if this is not the case, triangulating onto slight emanations of beacon would be easier with many points of observation.
