DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Steam: Missions
« on: December 10, 2022, 05:35:01 pm »
Hi all... so the new version, I found an artifact that claimed to be nearby and sent a squad after it.  They went out, came back a bit later... no artifact.  Oh well.  But when I clicked on Reports to see the report of what they did it didn't show anything?  Are missions just broken in the new version?

Also - not really 100% topical but god I miss Legends Viewer  :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Statuary and Details Mode
« on: September 12, 2022, 08:45:07 pm »
Hi all, I've been out of the game for a few years and now it seems that statues turn out random, even when you specifically request an image of (say) a deity.  I have tried several times to request statues of specific deities for areas of my fort (god of learning for the library, etc.) and it worked once... the other four times I ended up with images of some random goblin, an elf, a forgotten beast... none of them even mentioned the deity.  Is there a workaround for this?  Thanks in advance!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Defending Charmedsack

Wanted to give a public shout out to the absolute chad Aban Onuldakas, militia leader of the Cloudy Hammers.  He and his two mates, all new recruits in a barely-dug-in fortress, managed to take down a fire breathing sauropod FB with no injuries.

Aban, you are a prime example of why dwarves will never be overcome.  Well struck!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Did undead get re-buffed in 44.11?
« on: July 03, 2018, 10:09:39 am »
I just lost a young but decently strong fort to an undead osprey.  Back in the "old days", of course, this would be unremarkable.  Since the rebalance, though, my two trained hammerdwarfs with full armor and silver hammers should have taken it out with no problem.  It slaughtered both of them and welped the fort.  Did I just get a series of unlucky rolls, or has something changed?

DF Community Games & Stories / Shieldguard - The "Secret Weapon"
« on: December 09, 2017, 02:10:20 pm »
King Kol Chainanvil, Undisputed Lord of the Ponderous Knives, Ruler of the Mountains of Meandering was at dinner... with me.  The King took a bite of his rutherer roast and glanced up at me.  "So I understand from the librarians that you are a specialist in history?"  Eyeing my plate, he added "Eat up, it's very good."

I toyed with my food but obediently took a mouthful and chewed.  It tasted like sawdust thanks to my nerves.  Why was the King interested in history suddenly?  My father always warned me not to get sucked into politics, and dinner with the King was about as far into politics as one could get, especially in private.

"So," he continued, "... Mistem, I understand that you are an expert in the history of the rise and fall of the, who were they, the High Plant?"  The king took a deep drink from his platinum goblet and looked at me expectantly.

"Plank, sir, yes.  The High Plank never did very well, but they struggled along until the final destruction in 73 at the hands of an unprecedented union of the elven kingdoms of the Waxy Dawn, the..."  This was familiar ground.  Apparently his majesty was interested in history.  Who knew?

"Yes, yes, very tragic stuff that!  Filthy tree worshipping vermin."  King Kol leaned forward.  "Tell me, in your research, did you ever come across any evidence of a High Plank plan to settle in the Shattered Tundras?"

Once again, I could feel the solid mountain turning to goo beneath my boots.  "The... no!  I mean, no, sir, I never saw anything about... The High Plank was not a large civilization, begging your Majesty's pardon.  They had a few cities, centered on their main keep of Tombclasps.  Their initial settlement of Galleylauds was destroyed almost immediately by a roc, nobody knows why.  Once the Waxy Dawn conquered Tombclasps, and took it for their own, only a few small hillock settlements survived and eventually they collapsed as well.  The Shattered Tundras are on the other side of the continent from where Tombclasps were."  The king rolled his eyes; clearly I was missing something in this conversation.

"Very well, historian... let me teach you some history then."  The king smiled... it wasn't a particularly pleasant smile.  He continued. "Deep in the Shattered Tundras, on the coast of the Leaky Gulf, there is a very interesting spot indeed.  Did you know Erush Lushwhips, the one everyone called 'Hammer'?"  I shook my head, worried about where this seemed to be going.  "Well, she led an expedition of archaeologists to a spot named Shieldguard.  She said that it was the secret weapon of the High Plank against the elven threat.  Said she would bring me back evidence."  The King shook his head glumly.  "But we haven't heard anything more."

"Secret weapon?  Your Majesty, if Fikod Strikesyrup had a secret weapon, he would have used it good and hard when the Waxy Dawn, the Simple Deer and the Couple of Assault all destroyed his citadel and killed his people."  I was so confounded by the ridiculous story being told I forgot to be afraid.  "Furthermore, the High Plank lived due south of us, nowhere near the Shattered Tundra, and certainly not on the far side of it!  All their settlements were in a small geographical area, no further than the distance between Pastboots and Relicbloods.  Not only are the elves in the way, they would have to go past at least four goblin kingdoms to get there."

"Yes!  Exactly!"  The King finally thought I had come to the correct conclusion, whatever that was.  "There are all those goblins there!  While we get along reasonably well with the plant eaters, the goblins are a constant threat.  So glad you agree with me... so round up some friends and go see what Hammer is up to in the tundra.  Think of the history, an undiscovered site of the High Plank!"  At this point, I realized the sad truth; the King wasn't interested in history at all.  I was going to die in the wastes to something horrible.  But the King wasn't done yet.  "Take lots of writing material; I expect regular reports.  And when you figure out what this secret weapon was, tell me that, hmm... tell me that you've figured out your grandmother's recipe!  Yes, that will do."  The King was chuckling, pleased with his plan.  "Now go along, and tell the bookkeeper that you have a Royal Warrant for supplies, take whatever you need."  Looking down at my abandoned plate, the King said "What a waste of food.  Tch tch."

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Pedestals/display cases?
« on: November 29, 2017, 07:47:58 pm »
The wiki says I should be able to build pedestals from various workshops, but it is not listed in my menu, nor is it available via the manager order screen.

I built a display case in a carpenter shop, but it won't let me build it saying "No display objects", despite my having a number of artifacts and masterworks to display.

Is anyone else having this issue?  Help?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Looting Our Way to the Great Library
« on: November 28, 2017, 02:46:59 pm »
Hi Urists,

I am trying to make a longtime goal of mine come true by creating a fort with all the books.  I want copies of everything... if I have to send an agent to steal every bloody book, I will.  Is there any way to force a specific volume to be kept in one library instead of another?  I would like to have a "citizens only" library deep in the fort which contains the originals, and another public library upstairs that has copies which is available to traveling scholars.  It's an additional challenge, given my propensity for starting forts in the middle of goblin country on an evil glacier, but there we are.  Also, books don't seem to be displayable in the new display cases... has anyone else had any luck making them work?

DF General Discussion / Slow saves
« on: November 26, 2017, 06:42:42 pm »
Is it just me, or is the save process getting to ridiculous lengths?  Each update, I realize there's more info, but it's getting to where seasonal saves are taking more than a minute per.  Is there any way to speed them up?

DF General Discussion / Anyone got any really cool worlds?

My worldgens don't seem to produce very interesting situations any more... anyone got anything exotic they would like to share?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Migrant waves
« on: October 10, 2016, 06:48:01 pm »
Without using the LNP (since I'm on .43.05), how do I limit the size of migrant waves?  I'm sick of having to manually assign 30-40 dwarves at a time, and populations of 200-300 dwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dropped items being invisible
« on: September 27, 2016, 12:36:26 pm »
About every third time a caravan freaks out for no reason (undead yeti, pshaw!) and drops all its goods, my dorfs act like the dropped items are completely invisible.  If I forbid, unforbid, flag to Dump, unflag to Dump, set them in stockpiles keyed to supply other stockpiles... nothing seems to work.

I even tunnelled under them and dropped them onto a new square... still invisible.

If I flag metal items in the pile to be melted, the furnace dwarves will slowly make their way there and pick up the items to be melted, but none of the components in the pile (stone, metal, wood, etc.) are taken to their stockpiles, nor are the scrolls/codices in the pile placed in the library?

Help?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Pathing
« on: September 22, 2016, 11:47:13 am »
Can anyone explain to me how the game calculates pathing?  Here's the situation:

I embarked in a Terrifying biome (reanimating, evil goo rain).  The goo causes unconsciousness.  I define a burrow permitting only the inside portions of the fort.  So far so good.

Merchants dump a pile of goods at the edge of the map.  No problem, right?  I forbid the goods.  I dig a tunnel to the edge, ending in an up stair to the spot directly next to them.  I then create a tiny permitted zone right around the goods, and unforbid them.  I modify the burrow to include the tunnel, but definitely not the area outside the fort.  EVERY DWARF IN THE FORT runs outside, completely ignoring the burrow, and falls unconscious in the goo.  There to be slaughtered by undead ravens, but fine, whatever.  Why the hell didn't they obey the burrow, take the passage, and get the stuff?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Encrusted goblets?
« on: June 27, 2016, 01:29:38 pm »
Sorry for the logistics question, but what is the best way to ensure that goblets get encrusted before use?

I have the stockpiles mapped out for cut gems and goblets, but they get snatched up and used before I can get the gems on them, then they are left in the drink stockpile... by the time a dwarf brings it back, the jeweler doesn't have time to grab it before someone else snatches it and takes it to the tavern or stockpile and the cycle repeats.  I'd like to use some of the three million cut gems I have lying around to make them prettier, but I can't figure out how to make it work consistently.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Simultaneous noble promotion?
« on: June 26, 2016, 11:43:40 am »
Maybe I've just been lucky enough to miss this so far, but I just got promoted from Baron to Duke, and the other Baron in my fort (of some piddly little hillfort out in East Moses somewhere) got promoted to Duke as well!  Do all nobles of the same rank in the fort keep up, or what?  I don't think it used to work like that...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Reanimated head skin == fort death
« on: June 23, 2016, 05:44:32 pm »
Has anyone found a workaround for the utterly fort-destroying animated bits that can't be pulped, killed, or harmed in any way?  This basically renders any fort unplayable in a reanimating zone.
