DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Weep holes method to dig through an aquifer
« on: April 02, 2015, 08:57:09 am »
While working on my 3x3 double slit method (which is also possible though a bit slower than the standard 2x4) I found a much faster method than the double slit at the cost of an extra screw pump in the lowest aquifer level. I could not find anything similar in the forums so I made a step by step tutorial that you can find here. I won't post the "3x3 double slit method" because this method rendered it obsolete.

I will call it the "weep holes" method. Although similar in concept to the double slit method, this system has some major differences: It allows the construction of 3x3 staircases (or 3x4), it avoids the problem of job cancellations except in the two lower aquifer lever (which makes it a good choice for multiple aquifer layers), in the lowest aquifer level it uses two pumps instead of one and it is much faster (I went through 3 layers of aquifer in 1 month and 3 weeks).

New LNP Nov 16, 2013  (dwarffortress with Urist Da Vinci's Patch)

Arena results (500 rounds - 1 dwarf vs 1 dwarf):

Conclusion:
All metal materials tested (except adamantine) seem to be doing the same for war hammers against leather armor, almost the same against iron armor (highest is 11% difference between gold and silver) and there is a small diference when hitting adamantine armor (highest is 21% difference between platinum and steel).
The results are:
Platinum>=Gold>Copper>Silver=Steel=Iron

Old LNP (dwarffortress without Urist Da Vinci's Patch)
Arena results (100 rounds - 1 dwarf vs 1 dwarf):

Conclusion:
All metal materials tested (except adamantine) seem to be doing the same for war hammers with no noticeable difference (at least against armored enemies).
Less density might give advantage over high densities due to the bug reported by Urist Da Vinci (weights with a large decimal values are more important than densities)
Very high impact yield and very high impact fracture gave no advantage against very low impact values.

DF Gameplay Questions / Armor, weapons and demonstrations
« on: November 20, 2013, 03:32:25 am »
I read somewhere about a military embark so I decided to give it a try and started with the following skills:

Dwarf1: Teaching 5, Armor User 5
Dwarf2: Teaching 5, Shield User 5
Dwarf3: Teaching 5, Striker 5
Dwarf4: Teaching 5, Kicker 5
Dwarf5: Teaching 5, Dodger 5
Dwarf6: Teaching 5, Biter 5
Dwarf7: Weaponsmithing 5, Armoring 5

The idea is to create a group of 6 teachers through demostrations in squads of 2 dwarves.

I thought of the following equipment for the teachers:
Head: 1 steel helmet, 2 leather hoods
Body: 1 steel breastplate, 3 steel mail shirts, 6 leather cloaks
Hands: 1 pair of steel gauntlets, 1 pair of leather mittens
Legs: 1 steel greaves, 2 leather trousers
Feet: 1 pair of steel high boots, 1 pair of leather socks
Shield: light wood (willow maybe or something better if I can buy it)
Weapon: Steel axe or silver hammer

But I still have a couple of questions:

Q1: Is it wise to arm them with crossbows in the demostrations or are they unable to raise the marksdwarf skill in this way?
Q2: What would be the best equipment for demonstrations or it doesn't matter as long as they have a shield and a weapon?
