Is there a better way to do this?
Do I need channels everywhere I want the moat to be? Do I build channels to stop the moat from spreading?

Presuming that I want water to be where every square is marked 'a' and not where it's marked 'b', where do I place my channels?
Are there special rules pertaining to where you can carve fortifications?
However, the siegers don't want to oblige me by actually, uh, besieging me, preferring instead to remain at an undisclosed location off-screen while the corpses of the first wave decay and the big 'SIEGE' indicators remain at the top of the screen.
Do waves only trigger if there is a way into the fort? Are they just deepening the suspense?
ETA: Nevermind. I found the goblins, they were waiting around a bit south down the map, I had to lower the bridge and then allow some dwarves to go outside before they would advance on the fort. Unfortunately, I didn't properly monitor the entry and too many dwarves got out and then milled around outside rather than fleeing when the goblins showed up, leading to an unfortunate skirmish rather than the nice-and-clean steam technique.

- Start New Fortress, miner gets drowned, Abandon Fortress
- Reclaim Fotress, realize that I made my tunnels wrong, Abandon Fortress
- Start New Fortress, attempt to get group ready to embark, only on the screen where you add goods, the 'n' key no longer functions, keeping me from adding new items
I did go into other programs and check to make sure that I could still type the character 'n', it worked.
