DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Alternative Power Sources?
« on: August 07, 2023, 10:20:58 pm »
Hey all,

Outside of windmills and water wheels, as well as all the fancy things you can do with them..Are there any fancy power generation methods beyond those two?

Thanks  :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The big wait/steam release
« on: March 13, 2019, 10:49:07 am »
Wow, surprised to hear the very big news about the steam release. Hoping it does fantastic!
That being said, I can imagine this making the big wait become significantly slower.

I知 guessing the update process will need to be similar to how big mods do it now; the main release on bay12, followed by the mod release maybe 6 months later.

I知 guessing they値l need to do the same thing for steam right? Just seems like waiting until after the big wait to release on steam might save a lot of trouble. Otherwise the steam release is really going to play catch up to incorporate significant game changes.

Thoughts on this, and future releases?

DF General Discussion / Forum Politics - Dwarf Parties
« on: December 04, 2018, 03:23:44 pm »
I see people often branch into three group:

Group 1:
Those that want elves dead. Like the vanilla graphics. Like the clunky AI. Are sometimes snobby about the idea of how !FUN! they make the game for them self.

Group 2:

Those that see elves as a previously under developed group, and having been developed further, should be treated more fairly. Like to use several mods for more convenient gamplay. Think the abstraction of !FUN! more as a lack of existing features.

Group 3:

People who keep fix bugs and make mods.

If you had a name for these three groups, what would they be? Which group do you think you are most likely associated with, and what other groups have you noticed?

DF General Discussion / Toady痴 Airconditioning

This has been a problem for ages.

I would gladly donate to separate patreon if made solely for your air conditioner.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Mission- Found Nothing
« on: June 15, 2018, 03:20:07 pm »
Hey all, I was wondering if after sending a group on a mission, if nothing is found, does that mean just they aren稚 good enough to find?

If you send them more than once, with better skills, will they find more likely?

General Discussion / Oscilloscope Help
« on: January 10, 2018, 01:10:25 am »
Hey all,

I need to purchase an oscilloscope for EEG prototype testing.
I bought a usb based one at first and it was pretty darn terrible, so I知 going to stick with an independent unit (digital).

I知 assuming most o-scopes have no issues with 80Hz frequencies since they are generally rated in the MHz, and the voltage range I can pre amplify to whatever it needs to be.
Two channels should be fine, but it痴 the accuracy and noise I知 worried about since the source voltage is so low.

Recommendations on a good o-scope?
Thanks!

DF Suggestions / K (viewing) and others
« on: February 25, 2017, 09:54:39 am »
It would be nice for designation or selection tools such as the k (view) icon to change colors if it passes over a similair colored tile. Especially up/down stairs.

Trying to view things on my large set of sand up/down staircases is pretty much impossible.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Good Bad Weapons
« on: February 21, 2017, 12:00:51 pm »
Assuming no accessibility to stone or metals (or mechanisms), should the fortress even bother equipping any weapon other than ranged weapons?

I got in an argument about whether solely having melee characters with a shield and free hand is likely better than any of the bone or wood weapons they could get a hold of for melee. I'm on the wrestler with a shield side. (Again absolutely no stone, metal , ranged or mechanisms allowed).

Edit: *Vanilla DF
EditEdit: *For dwarves, not cave-ins and pumps.

DF General Discussion / Stagnant? Doomed? Whose idea?
« on: March 08, 2016, 12:30:21 pm »
I don't know what's getting into people lately, but there's been a lot of threads about stagnant doomed dwarf fortress lately...

Where the hell is this coming from?

There's been times when DF hasn't recieved an update in well over a year! Ever since world activation, Toady has been active and updating DF at rates that most mod developers couldn't hope to keep up with.

Multi threading, x64, FPS death...All of issue with this stuff is pretty much mitigated if you're using a 1/2 decent desktop, and by the time we're in a spot to where decent desktops of today can't  run dwarf fortress of tomorrow, we'll probably have quantum computers by then and much bigger things to worry about...

Yes I admit, my craptop cannot play Dwarf Fortress past year 5 without some tricks. But that thing can't run 4/5ths of the old games from the early 2000's anyhow. My desktop though is 7 years old and have had virtually no problems. The user interface I'm aware is ugly, but by no means does it break the game.

The community is alive, Toady is very actively releasing updates, the game runs on almost any desktop, donations have been decently high over last year. This game has virtually no death symptoms from my previous experience with indie games (TONS of failed indie games, thanks steam Greenlight). Maybe America elections got people stirred up idk.

Do any players have reasonable agreement to games imminent damnation, or is this just an influx of randomly panicking escaped lunatics? Am I maybe turning blind eye to a bigger problem?

DF Gameplay Questions / Pamphlets of Life and Death
« on: February 29, 2016, 03:46:35 pm »
Does handing out texts/slabs with the secrets of life and death to NPCs (adventure modes) do anything other than make them carry it around all the time? Will someone eventually read it?

General Discussion / Bad at Dnd roleplay
« on: January 18, 2016, 05:34:51 am »
Hey all,

I'm playing with a Dnd group in the campaign Oota (out of the abyss 5e).
The DM isn't bad and we've only had a couple sessions, but I feel like I'm not really 'soaking in' the world like I should be. I understand mechanics well, but I have a really hard time roleplaying. I can't help but think of the NPCs as talking experience points that I have to keep pushing until they leak information.

What are some ways that help you engage in the world without feeling like you're pushing some agenda or initiative to progress things forward, and instead really feel like your being present? Everytime I do something with the environment, I feel like I'm just trying to nod some sort of quirk my character has and not truely interacting.

(I've only played dnd once through the campaign of mines of phandelver, so roleplaying isn't something I do often)

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Update and Necromancer Faction
« on: January 18, 2016, 12:01:01 am »
Hey guys,

When playing adventure mode a week ago, I spoke with a Necromancer warlord who's group which he ruled controlled a Necromancer tower.

I noticed I had an option to become a performance group for his faction, but was never given the option to become an actual member of his group. (Like you can with bandits and lords etc)

I was wondering, with this most recent update have any of you re-attempted this since there were many fixes towards faction relations? Or are Necromancer groups still no longer an entity you can join, but can become a performer for?

I'd science this out myself, but I'm without a PC for a while and would really like to know!

**Edit-

Tried twice now on necro towers masters, they still won't let me join minus being a performer.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do I write books?
« on: December 12, 2015, 03:15:43 am »
Hey all, I'm trying to make books but I can quite diagnose the issue.

I have the following in my library:
1. 2 Scholars
2. 2 Scribes
3. A stockpile with codices, paper materials, scroll rollers etc
4. 3 bags
5. A bookshelf
6. 2 tables and 4 chairs

My scribes though are not readers and writers, is that an issue?

I just hope I have the setup right and I don't just wait here for eternity expecting something when really I'm missing a key ingredient. Maybe if someone can tell me what those (desired) and other numbers are on the page that'd be helpful.

Like I said, I have a stockpile in there, and some EMPTY bags, but it doesn't say I have writing materials in the room (even though they are in the stockpile).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Are invaders 'back' yet?
« on: December 02, 2015, 02:30:01 pm »
Hey all,

So in adventure mode, people seem to be hostile and angry again (atleast more so than the last edition)
I tried telling a poem to a camp full of bandits, and they swiftly shot me to pieces then impaled me...

That being said, are invaders much more 'fighty' in this release as well in fort mode?

AND are the invaders finally pathing more frequently to the fort?
Or do I still need to wait 4+ years for 5 cowardly gobs?

**EDIT:
-Snatchers and Thieves are confirmed!

Masterwork DF / No invasive forces.
« on: July 22, 2015, 07:40:18 pm »
Hey guys,

I'm playing Masterwork Reborn, and I'm aware that this build in particular is light on the sieges, but I'm getting no biters whatsoever.
No thieves, no assaults, no beasts/titans, and I made sure to have a gigantic array of evil/do bad neighbors. Oddly enough, I set frogmen to civilized, and almost all of the civilized races I preset have visited me. There's been no FUN for the ~4 years my fort aside from me (out of desperation and dwarven righteousness) killing elven caravans.

This is the age of myth too, so I'd have thought something would have come by now, heck even a thief of some sort...Population of 60something, around 200k wealth.

Edit: Hmm, about a month ago another person seems to be having the same issue. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=150974.0
