is there a mod where you can embark on fortress mode with more dwarves? or do i just have to change something in the raws?

Ahoy, i've been trying to dig a pit in front of my fortress entrance so i can build a bridge over it but so far i've had no luck. i've dug out the shape of the pit on the level below but i dont know how to dig it out from ground level?
