DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Any sieges in the last year?
« on: April 11, 2016, 02:50:51 pm »
Hi,

When version 0.4x came out last year after 0.34 I remember siege not working anymore. There was some talk about the whole siege system having been change to appear more realistic or something, but after 6 fortress played for 5 years each by min maxing and having a shitton of wealth and not one single siege, ambush or anything besides some wandering forgotten beast, titan or werecreature I got bored out of my mind and took a break from DF.

So are frequent sieges back in the game or are goblins still turning the other cheek?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Overly attached caravan
« on: September 28, 2014, 06:08:04 pm »
So the dwarven caravan said they were going on their way but decided to stay a little longer. I only sold them my 2 silver balls, so no heavy packing. It's been a year now, both elves and humans have come and gone, so no pathfinding problem, but the dwarves are still staying. No new dwarven caravan came in autumn so I finally decided to destroy the depot.
They are still not leaving, even with no depot.

Dunno what else to do. How can I make their lazy asses go away?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The elven overlords
« on: September 19, 2014, 06:31:54 am »
I generated a world with 250 years of history. It has 2 dwarven civilizations both extinct, one at the hands of goblins and the other enslaved by elves for 130 years.
Started a fort for the civ at war with elves. I did get the first caravan ( no liason) and 2 migrant waves. So am I going to keep getting caravans and migrants? Is it possible to revive the civilization? Say I make a lot of embarks and leave them then return to my first fortress, would that make one of those embarks the Mountainhome and restore normal course?

DF Gameplay Questions / Ballistas
« on: September 14, 2014, 08:29:53 am »
I was thinking about how to make an impenetrable defense without any soldiers since I generally find military to be way too unreliable. So I made my normal entrance for caravans and under it a bridge covered long one tile wide corridor filled with weapon traps and a ballista at the end of it.

Now traps are all well and good, but we still have to consider them annoying trap-avoid beasties.

I have never used siege engines up until now, so I made the ballista shoot through a fortification and a 1 tile wide corridor... a ballista made with 3 masterwork parts, a legendary+5 operator and silver tipped arrows. It shoots about 2-3 tiles, 5 at best... in a straight line...

Am I doing something wrong or are siege engines really that disgustingly bad?

DF Gameplay Questions / Killing thralls
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:36:44 am »
I was getting bored of easy neutral temperate forests so I went for my first terrifying embark in a tropical shrubland. After several horrible failures I decided to ask for help.

Ogres I can handle... somewhat, but I have this unholy soot that doesn't always come from the side of the map, sometimes it materializes right in the middle of my base. It turns everything it touches into thralls. Now apart from giving even cats strength on par with forgotten beasts the damn thing seems to be contagious. I've never seen a creature engage a thrall in melee and not become one themselves (before dying of course). They also seem to be completely immune to bolts.

Even if I'm careful about my dwarfs and animals, other wildlife or traders still get infected and storms my fortress as soon as I open that bridge. I can't gather wood, let traders in, farm outside, build or pretty much anything. I don't want to completely abandon the outside world and go for caverns, I'm trying to build a mighty dwarven fortress, not oversee a bunch of scared dwarfs in a cave scrounging for food.

So how do you kill thralls without triggering a zombie apocalypse? Is it actually possible to survive in such a biome?

P.S.  Unholy soot thrall kitten bites the militia commander in the upper body through the leather cloak breaking the ribs, puncturing the left lung and the heart.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Invisible vampires
« on: September 08, 2014, 05:15:10 am »
So I've just had my elite marksdwarf with awesome stats drop dead for no reason that I can discern.

At first I noticed he was pale, so I thought I might have a vampire. I isolated suspicious individuals and then proceeded to follow my guy so I could protect him. He also had a broken nose and ears, so I switched off hauling for my doctor so he could patch him up, although there was apparently no diagnosis required. I followed the guy and then he suddenly just dropped dead without being attacked or anything. The only syndrome bearing creature I've come across so far this game was a forest titan giant bee with a poisonous sting that never even stung anyone (because of my brave sharpshooter).

So what went wrong? Did he just get bored of life and stopped breathing?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Tips on dealing with Werebeasts
« on: September 06, 2014, 02:41:55 pm »
For some reason my world seems to be really badly infested with werecoyotes and werezebras. Now werecoyotes are pushoverers, but werezebras come in like terminators. They grab people by their toes and smash them to death into the ground, bite people's heads off, rip off limbs and punch through organs. Furthermore they seem to be utterly immune to anything I can throw at them, I have 10 marksdwarves with bone and wooden bolts which only bruise the skin at best and 4 axedwarves with iron axes who can bruise muscles at best.
I suppose having full steel armor sets would change the results, but I'm still years away from that.

These guys simply come in, murder 5-10 dwarves then just walk away in human form.

Any tips on how to better deal with them in the first years?
