DF Gameplay Questions / Creatures are teleporting through walls?
« on: September 23, 2019, 04:53:52 pm »
In my most recent game, I have a one-wide hallway which is bypass cavern, eg:

CCCCCCCCCC
WWWWWWW
___________
WWWWWWW
CCCCCCCCCC

Where W is wall and C is cavern layer. The cavern is otherwise completely inaccessible. I confirmed this using DFhack's path-to-location script.

One of my dwarves managed to end up on the other side of that wall and was mauled by a forgotten beast. Just to confirm this wasn't a one-off, I reloaded my save, and this time the forgotten beast managed to end up on the inside of the hallway!

Is this a known bug?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Shared bedroom stuff on ground
« on: September 14, 2019, 09:57:24 pm »
So my fortress has one giant overlapping bedroom for efficiency. With 200+ dwarves, essentially everyone now has a Royal bedroom.

The downside... is that there is a stupid amount of crap the dwarves leave on the ground. It's madness. See the photo.

I tried adding cabinets, but the dwarves end up in loops where they put things into and then throw them out, over and over. Anyone have a solution?

Problem: Urist McSandbagFiller cancels Collect Sand: Job Item lost or destroyed. For dozens of dwarves, almost constantly. See the image.

Things that ARE NOT PROBLEMS:

1) The sand pick-up zone is large. Like 5x5.
2) There are dozens and dozens of free, unused bags.
3) There are four different workshops all running sand collection jobs at once.
4) No, those bags are not forbidden.
4a) No, those bags are not inaccessible.
4b) No, the dwarves are not inside burrows preventing access to bags or workshops.
4d) No, seriously, it's not the bags.
5) One single stockpile exists for sand bag collection. It allows collection from everywhere, and it has no wheelbarrows defined.
6) No stockpile exists for regular bags. They sit wherever they are last used (usually glass furnaces) for pickup.

Does anyone have a good explanation of why this happens? I'm starting to believe sand collection is fundamentally buggy.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / McUrist is randomly horrified
« on: August 13, 2019, 10:19:12 am »
I've got dwarves getting horrified during random things, like engraving walls. No corpses or ghosts anywhere around. Is this a bug?

DF General Discussion / Why do my Dwarves drop crap everywhere?
« on: August 12, 2019, 01:56:00 am »
My dwarves are leaving crap everywhere. Mainly food, and military gear. The dining halls are the most common for this to happen in, but it does show up elsewhere.

Uniforms are all set to replace/exact matches. On-duty military carry water and one food item.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Can set stockpile to not hold empty barrels?
« on: August 08, 2019, 02:44:28 pm »
I've set up a dwarven daycare for my kids to get them out from under foot. Small room, plenty of beds, statues, etc.

I want to put single (1x1) food and drink stockpiles in there from them. My dwarves invariably end up putting an EMPTY pot/barrel on these 1x1 tiles which is useless. How can I forbid empty pots or barrels from a stockpile?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Interior-only vermin cleanup

How can I get my dwarves to haul vermin remains from *only inside* to a refuse pile?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How to deal with crashes?
« on: July 25, 2019, 02:33:47 pm »
My lightly modded (official Modest Mod) DF crashes a fair bit. Latest version. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

I have error logs but they don't show me much. They're here in case anyone can help.

The heck is with this message? I have 10 beds available, but I keep getting this when trying to encrust them.

The workshops are not restricted, the beds are not forbidden or inaccessible, and the beds are not being used in current jobs.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Entertainer overflow
« on: July 25, 2019, 10:24:02 am »
Do the petitioners to join you for 'entertainment' only ever do so in your tavern? Because I really don't need 6 of them there. The temples would be nice.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dump zone mechanics
« on: July 24, 2019, 04:58:09 pm »
If you have multiple zones with Garbage Dump enabled, which one is used? Nearest to the item to be dumped? Nearest to the dwarf when he is assigned the job? Magic?

A bunch of my dwarves don't wear armor that is available to them.

Uniform is set to the squad. Replace armor, partial matches. Checked and confirmed the free pieces of armor are not forbidden, not involved in a task, and are not owned. So....? How do I get my guys to actually *pick this stuff up*?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / These dwarves and their needs...
« on: July 19, 2019, 06:21:29 pm »
My dwarves often report unfulfilled needs, and I'm trying to figure out how to satisfy them:

"Unoccupied" - my dwarves all have labors. Does this including hauling? Do they need an actual craft?
"Being away from traditions" - I have no idea what this means.
"Unable to practice a craft" - I have outside citizens (soldiers, entertainers) with this. Are they going to go insane from lack of being able to craft?
"Acquire something" - The wiki suggests this can be solved by hauling a trade craft, but this seems rather convoluted. Any other way to solve this?
"Eat good meal" - *everyone* in my fort has minor unhappiness from this, despite me having plenty of prepared food. Do I need fine or lavish meals?
"Unable to pray to X" - I've got a small temple (3x1) for every god set up, yet almost all my citizens have some level of "unable to pray to X". What gives?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Spires of Pain: Untimely demise
« on: July 16, 2019, 03:05:24 pm »
After a few years off from DF, I came back to see all the fun about visiting bards, temples, libraries and such.

I always wanted to make an above ground tower fortress. I decided that an offshoot of my dwarven civilization had decided that true dwarves used the earth to build great tower fortresses, but were shunned and forced to leave. They embarked to a rocky wasteland where they were able to realize their vision in undisturbed solitude.

So here was the setup:

* 3x3 map (more FPS, more danger from invaders)
* No tree harvesting allowed
* No farming allowed
* Start with 10 dwarves (dfhack) but same embark points
* No more than 10 new dwarves/year

Thus was founded: Spires of Pain (Datur Zulash) by Ronmamgoz (Ragedraons).

The tower was coming along pretty well into year two, when this happened:

No problem, I thought. Werelizard. The main gate of the fortress is designed for just this issue. Close it and wait until he goes away. So I give the order to Urist McAnyDwarf to pull the lever. And I wait... and wait... and wait... and by then the werelizard is inside the tower. A quick squad is formed to attack it. The visiting humans shoot it with arrows. Blood, blood everywhere. Eventually it dies and I have 10 injured dwarves of various types.

So I quickly create a hospital and set them up in it. They recover for a week... and then most of the injured transform into werelizards and slaughter everyone else before dying of their wounds.

Aftermath of the carnage, and just before everyone else dies:

Lessons learned:

0) Do not create a defense system that relies on your dwarves doing things quickly!
1) Don't forget to set up your hospital *before* you need it....
2) Make soap before you need it...
3) Isolate anyone who was injured by a were-creature
4) Equip those nice weapons and armor you bought from caravans... early.

The next tower attempt will be "Spires of Longing". It just sounds dwarven.

I've got a pair of cave spiders, but I'm using them to make web traps; so, not trained. Will the female still breed?
