DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Macabre Mood trouble

My large and bustling fortress, due to repeated exposure to the magma-bound corpses of our enemies, has for several years slumped into a general state of depression and tantrums.  This has led to my first Macabre Mood ever!

The darkly brooding dwarf has claimed a butcher shop, and gathered a stack of bones, a skull, and three vermin remains.  He is still asking for silk and yarn cloth, both available, but also "things... certain things."  I figure that he still needs something lugubrious.  There are plenty more body parts to be had: the problem is that I only have 1 cat (who is somebody's pet) and there are no more vermin remains available.  Would he need more than 3?  What else could it be?  And, if so, is there a way to kill vermin without cats?

He is not in a burrow, so no problems there.  I'd be sad to waste this mood and sad to lose a fortress-born adult.

DF Gameplay Questions / Artificial Waterfall Woes

I am having some trouble with the waterfalls I am trying to install in my dining room and meeting hall.  Mainly that they keep flooding the place.

The waterfall involves several basic 2-pump stacks.  I started with a single tile, covered with a grate, which served as both the intake for the bottom pump and the drain for the actual water.  That flooded quite quickly, so I changed it to six grated holes.  That also floods quite quickly.  The hole can only be so big, because grates do not support each other and I don't want any open holes in the floor.  You know exactly what these sick beards will do with them.

Because it is difficult to describe accurately, here are screenshots:

Anyone have some experience to relate about indoor waterfalls of this nature?  How big a drain do I need?  What can I change?

DF Gameplay Questions / Frozen Elsewhere bug?

I reclaimed a fortress recently which had fallen.  In that fortress was a rather extensive pump stack, powered by water wheels, designed to bring magma from deep below up to a reservoir close to the surface for forges and such.  The machinery worked fine before, although I didn't get to fill it before the fortress fell (the intake was too narrow and did not refill fast enough, so the magma in the reservoir evaporated as it filled).

The pumps and machinery were all still as I left them upon reclaiming.  I've dug out a wider intake area.  When the surface thawed, however, the machinery did not work: every piece of it says "frozen elsewhere" (none say "frozen").  I deconstructed and rebuilt a few gears and axles and determined that all the machinery except the actual pumps will churn to life, but as soon as it is reconnected to the pumps, it all stalls again. 

I really don't fancy deconstructing and rebuilding 35 screw pumps one at a time, in the hopes that one is a troublemaker.  So does any other player have a workaround?  Has anyone experienced this, and have a solution?  I found some bug reports related to this but they're from way back in 2008.

DF Gameplay Questions / The Elusive Sliver Barb

I have started playing version .40 at last: and I wish to challenge myself with an evil biome.  I love the clothing industry, too, and I want to dye things black.  But no matter how hard I try, I cannot seem to embark in an area with these damned sliver barbs.

Other than evil, in what kind of biome have folks had luck finding the things?  With all the new plants in .40, are they harder to find?  I have so far gone through ten worlds, embarking in the evil areas in all of them, to no avail.

When shopping around a world for a site upon which to embark, do stones like cinnabar and cobaltite count as "metal" for the Shallow/Deep Metal finder?

If so, my butt hurts.

DF Gameplay Questions / Transferring saves

I cannot seem to import my fortress from one computer to another successfully.  I have uploaded the 'region1' folder from data/save to Dropbox, and then paste it into the data/save folder on my other computer.  When I go to play it, the game doesn't see it at all -- Create New World is the only option, as if the folder were empty.  Are there more files somewhere I need to transfer?
