DF Suggestions / UI make it easier to remove/delete stuff
« on: March 21, 2019, 12:34:12 am »
I always get confused and have to look through menus to remove stuff.

Piles(partial and full), zones, designations, constructions( before and after built), plots and furniture maybe more. Everything you remove from time to time when growing, planning, and rebuilding, has a different menu to go to to delete/remove/clear it. This has always hung me up in the past, and even now, when playing again for the first time in a bit, I was stumped removing a construction's designation (blueprint) before it was built with the remove construction tool before realizing that was only for already constructed things

There are different approaches to dealing with it.

There could be a generic remove function/tool that would work for most things.

Or maybe, if you use the wrong one, it could display the info somewhere of which menu to use to get to the needed remove function.

If mouse functionality is enhanced, maybe a right click menu could offer a way to "un" do whatever it is, or tell where to go to deal with it , or could have a menu item to "take you to relevant menu for the item"

DF General Discussion / Df IRL
« on: November 03, 2018, 01:36:04 am »
I googled a name (followed by film) from a student casting call to see if I could find previous films by said student. Yes haha laugh at the moron actor trying to live his dreams.

But this came up as the google summary, I ONLY changed the names to Urist. Everything is is real. As real as the simulation we live in.  :o

Urist, a junior majoring in art practice and minoring in film & media studies, admires the detail of an etching in Cry Uncle, a 23-page accordion-fold book on torture by Urist.

“Cry Uncle is a particularly intricate work, both in craft and in meaning,” Urist said. “Every element of the book is intentional: from the paper that feels like skin as you turn the pages, to the fabric case that is sew to resemble a face. For my honors thesis in art practice I will be creating my own series of artists’ books, so I am looking forward to exploring the library’s own collection.”

General Discussion / Hello! I need a programming language recommendation.
« on: October 26, 2017, 12:24:02 am »
Hello everyone!
First off you shouldn't waste your time reading this. If you do, thank you ahead of time.  Ok now I wont feel bad writing alot! It kinda needs some back info.

Ok, I got these three industry web pages I log into cause I am stupidly traveling the path to become an actor in film and tv in Los Angeles. Yes yes, impossible Im dumb, millions of people trying, etc, etc.

Anyhow part of the work part of acting is monitoring three industry webpages to submit for parts. Actors access, backstage, and la casting. So they are not the most modern pages. They do weird things like use a shopping cart to select parts to apply for then "checkout" for money or free with monthly sub.  Not the money part, everyone want to extract from the acting throngs. Just the weird use of 2002 era web shopping cart code.

A big part for my , no credit, small time butt is submitting like 5 mins after everything gets posted.

So I am trying to setup an rss feed type deal where I can just leave some client running to watch all three. Thing is its like a huge amount and I just want the filtered ones that fit my description, and each site has a built in way to save a default filter.

I made a shortcut with three destinations and it opens all three webpages, But I need to click various amounts of logins and the filter page gets a click for "filter by these" for each to get the list up. If I link to an address already filtered it stops me at the login page, different problems for each of the three.

So I want to make a client or script I can run to open all three windows, filtered and logged in.

So is this something I could use python for? I thought of an autoit script, but that would be a pain and thats a hacky way to deal. Although simple and in my wheelhouse already.

Python? Go? Java? C#?    I finally got off programming tutorials and made my own thing from scratch in autoit, and feel like I am ready for the next level and thought some sort of alert-er web browser would be a good next thing.

Maybe I should fork an open source browser and hack it into what I want.

I dunno. I know there are alot of varied programming experienced people in all sorts of specialized languages around and would love to hear some opinions.

If you read my drivel, thank you very much!

Oh duh, I run windows on my main so cross platform is best but I think I would build this for my debian server to run all the time and email me when a new one comes in.

Thanks Again guys!

DF General Discussion / What linux desktop environment for DF?
« on: January 06, 2016, 10:17:18 pm »
:D I know enough to know that could be a volatile question!

I don't mean in general, I mean specifically for my scenario...I am sure all off them could be the best for whatever.

Ok enough flame retardant...here's my deal,
I got a dellrackmount 1850 with two 3.6ish(forget,irrelevant )single core xeons with 16 gigs of ram and with the few ways to "remotely" run DF,now and on the horizon, I am determined to be able to fiddle with my fort while stuck at work with downtime.   I have had a highly modded Minecraft server on it and use it to serve a few games here and there, so I am fair to middling with the Linux terminal, but never used x.

I am pretty sure DF needs x to run in Linux for opengl.

So will the ultra light environments not have stuff I need? Do I simply need opengl support? Will the fancy modern puffy ones take some cycles away from DF? or not since it dual cpu and DF uses mainly one.

My plan is to wrestle with dfeverywhere a bit.or vnc ...I know I can remotely run x over ssh on my phone, could I just play through that, with a Bluetooth keyboard lol. These are the questions I am setting  out to answer.

Tldr; which graphic environment has the least impact on df in Linux.  My distro is deb 8.
Thanks

DF Gameplay Questions / linked levers stop working to floodgates
« on: February 18, 2015, 08:35:05 am »
I am looking for a bit of help.

I have a lever hooked to two floodgates as a drain and a lever linked to two floodgates as a cistern intake.  With use, both lever have quit working at different times.

First the drain link broke. So I removed the open floodgates, re built them and re linked them. Upon filling, I was turning the intake floodgates on and off. Trying to get just enough water in their, and the intake quit working, with the floodgates open.

Is this an in game break, from low quality mechanisms or a bug?

Is there a way to fix it with dfhack?

Thanks guys!
