DF Modding / Removing fuel requirements from metalsmiths forge

I can mod my smelter to make things using air and cold ore, but not my metalsmith...any solutions/workarounds?

DF Modding / heal.exe doesn't work for me

I downloaded heal.exe started up DF, put the v thing on a dwarf with a neck injury, and started up heal.exe. A black window flashed for half a second and nothing opened and my dwarf wasn't healed. What do I do? Sorry if this should have gone in the help forum.

I was wondering..

Is it possible to make the product of the reaction a "rough" stone like bauxite or cobaltite? If so, what exactly do I enter for the product to get it?

Whats the reaction for metal mechanisms again?

I looked for this elsewhere, but couldn't find anything.

Question 1: Does re-irrigating your farms have any advantage?
Question 2: I started in a forested map with a brook, but I can't find any sand(plenty of sandy loams, however). I made a sand collection zone, ordered my glass furnace to "gather sand", I have buckets, I've dug near the river...Am I doing something wrong or is there simply no sand? And if there is no sand, how do I cheat for it? Or must my ninth glass-needing strange mood dwarf go insane?
Question 3: I have a cat overpopulation problem, so I decided to butcher 30 or so. However, I can only butcher the two or three stray kittens - is there any way to take a pet from a dwarf besides killing him? Can I make my cats stop adopting owners? Can I at the very least group them all in one place and smash them all with a drawbridge?
Question 4: If some sort of cave in accident happened to a visiting elven caravan (The lever must have slipped), would there be any retalliation by the elves? It took me forever to build that pit below the trade depot, it would be a shame if it was wasted
Question 5: I have a population of 112, its been three years, when do the seiges and Titans kick in? After the economy?
Question 6: How do you kill caged goblins? My current method is surrounding them with marksmen and releasing them, but recently the goblin managed to slash my cooks throat before he was turned into a pincushion.
Question 7: I recently built a floorgrate, but later removed it. Now I have a floor there, and it wont let me build on top of the floor. This does not make sense. I also dug a channel on the surface, but replaced it with a floor. The floor lets sunlight through and its "inside" ITS A SOLID GRANITE FLOOR DAMN IT GAAH! Any workarounds?
Question 8: My noble gave me a mandate "make clear glass items" I had no glass, and I figured the punishment would be minor. The mandate ran out and my sheriff procedeed to beat the everliving fuck out of a migrant with glassmaking, shattering his upper and lower spine and brusing his kidneys, spleen, brain, throat, left lower arm, right hand and upper arm, left lower leg, left lower and upper leg, and mangling/breaking his right lower arm, left upper arm, right upper leg and right lower leg. Blood everywhere, he was in bed for months. Later, pitifully crawling around with incurable wounds...another glass mandate! Blood everywhere, he's still in bed. Any way to stop this seasonal glassmaker beating?


Sorry for the amount of questions, I checked the wiki and scanned previous topics and only got an answer to one question I had about why my line of 10 crossbow weapon traps isn't set off by snatchers. Which is incredibly dissapointing.

DF Gameplay Questions / Stopping the economy

The tax collector arrived and the economy started. I decided the economy was stupid and turned it off in the init file, but nothing happened. Can it be turned off? Must I kill the tax collector?

If its any help, heres from the init file.

How do I make them give water to the wounded? I have an accessible stream, acessible well with 7/7 water underneath, and my dwarves have aboslutely no problem drinking water when I run out of alchohol.

DF Bug Reports / Useless ambushes

I was playing adventuerer mode lately with high hopes for random encounters... But they suck.

I get a random encounter every ~6 spaces, have to wait while the map loads, and find myself standing in the middle of nowhere. No animals. I walk around, look around, look up and down...nothing. Wait...nothing. I press T, it says YOU MUST SURVIVE THE AMBUSH OF DEATH! I move three spaces away, I can travel again. So far I've only found anything on one ambush - a single cougar two screens away I killed with a coin.

Is this a bug or are ambushes just horribly underpowered?

Edit: You can also spawn in an empty murky pool. Unless the invisible animals can jump through Z-levels to get you this should be fixed too.

Another Edit: I finally, after eight or nine tries, got a pack of wolves. On the other side of a river. Target practice anyone?

Curses / LCS Raids

Two questions about police/army raids in LCS..

1: Do they ever stop? Ive beaten them back about 20 times and they keep on coming.

2: How do you destroy tanks? I've tried swords, MP5's  Ar15's M16's Shotguns, bare hands, and it hits 'to no effect' every time.

I find myself needing security skill all the time, but no matter what I do, I barely if ever gain any. Whats the best way to get it? This is driving me insane...
