DF Gameplay Questions / I salute my Goblin Overlords?

So, in one embark I have saved, I'm right beside a Goblin fortress, so I was anticipating a siege or two.   But the Neighbors screen doesn't show Goblins as neighbors(it never does!?), and I noticed that my civilization is absolutely infested with Goblins in leadership ositions(my Liason is a Gobber, almost all the Barons/Baronesses) and I don't know what that means!

In 40.09 I went with a clean start.  Set up a fort right by the goblins, screw up some things, retired.   Set up another fort.

First:  Does dual slit still work, or am I doing it wrong?   I couldn't get the aquifers to drain into each other.   Plug methods seem to work, So I'm thinking about dropping a ring through the aquifer.   

But, anyway, I'm like 5 tiles out from a Goblin fortress/city thing.   I've already got a 2 story tallwall with a 2z deep moat around it.   A drawbridge, and I can happily cut contact with the world.   Except for the frikken aquifer.

So, something new has happened to me.   I have not a single idle dorf, and more tasks to complete.  I actually look forward to the inevitable cheesemaker, because I have a job for him.  I need walls and floors built, ore smelted, things to be made, food to be cooked.   I have plenty of food, plenty of booze, access to water(I NEED MOAR DORFS!   I can't build a resevoir and pump yet). 

17 dwarves, and nary a single one of them is idle.   Holy crap, am I starting to get this?

And can I get my defenses done in time?

IT seems like when i issue channel designations, there are times when a miner and his designation will get "stuck".   The Miner AND the designation are flashing, but the miner doesn't move.   Undesignatignthe channel works, but get's confusing when 4+ miners are digging.   

Anyone else seeing this?

so I cracked open a new fort in 05, and decided to do some digging.  By the end of the first year, I'm sitting pretty with about 400 urists of booze(!?!   It worked!), several hundred roasts, and a nice secure spot to hide out in.   I've breached all three caverns, sealing off the mineshafts afterwards so that nothing Fun paths into my fortress.  The only ores I seem to have are Native gold, Galena and Malachite, well, and the two Candy spires I found in the magma sea.   I've just mined out my first bit of candy, then saved the game.   

So.   What do I do?  I think I've identified the hollow section that leads to the Circus, which I've never actually experienced.   Yet. 

I haven't done any real metal work(I skipped bringing fire safe rock with me at embark so...yeah, dar), and I'm thinking that my Proficient smiths arn't yet good enough to be making candy gear for me to use.   So should I train them up making copper gear? 

Which leads me to the next thing:   I guess I need to build a pumpstack to draw the Magma up to my working area(that is yet to be built) so I can power furnaces and schtuff, ja?
