with the reworked materials in 2010, how usefull are artifact weapons and armours?  Is say a Giant rat artifact shield more protective than a steel masterwork?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Missing Smelting options

I just started a new game using the Phoebus tileset and having imput t he vermin to ash reaction. However several reactions arn't showing up, notably smelt lignite and coal. I checked the raws and those reactions are still present, any ideas on how I could fix this or do I have to reinstall and regen?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How to build a Dairy?

I'd really like to make some sort of pen for my cattle/horses but I can't work out how to make one that allows them to be milkable and doesn't mess up pathfinding by using 'tightly closed doors'. Ideas or solutions anythone? Thanks!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Military Dwarves Skulking in Barracks

Despite problems with equiping them, I hadn't any trouble with the squad 'kill' button (the squad would happily charge off and smash a buzzardect) till a titan showed up; when asked to kill it the dwarves promptly ran to their barracks and refused to come out. This was extremely funny at the time but getting a little annoying; the only way I can aget them to fight things now is the old system of stationing them next to a monster. Does anyone know what might be cousing this, equipment issues>?

Thankfully the Hydra was killed by an axewielding clothier who decided to play Toreador (Lured the thing into charging him, then cut off it's heads after leaping to the side) But I've now a Bronze colosuss to deal with. Speaking of which are they killable now?

DF Gameplay Questions / Axels and Machinery

I've been trying and failing to build a working pump for a while now. My dwarves absolutely refuse to pump it manually so I tried installing a gear chain linked to a windmill. Unfortuneatly the gear chain was too long and ate up too much power, so I tried replacing the sequential gearchains with axels. eg

But it doesn't seem to work the axels and everything after just registers as 'unpowered'  Is there a guide or similiar to doing this?  Thanks!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Any point to Roads?

Not played since 2d and there to get big caravans you needed paved roads from map edge to trade depot. Unfortunately the caravans now refuse to drive allong my shiny yellow brick road and instead insist on driving over the mountain. Am I right in thinking that roads are now of no or extremely limited use?

SOrry the the newbie question, but this is the first time I've played since 2D. ..How does one tell which  neighboring civilisations are active in the embark screen? I've started 6 fortresses on as many continents all of which have said elves, humans and dwarves are nearby in the world gen screen but after embarking always find that it's only dwarves. Many thanks!

Sorry If this has been posted before, but I cannot find the post;

Clothier's task now take up 'a thousand' units of cloth. is this right as it means than an entire dwarven caravan of overpriced pigtail cloth makes about a bag.

If it's a bug is there a work around?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Gaining Weapon Experiance

How does ones adventurer gain weapon experiance. Is it via the number of hits dealt out, the number of kills or another mechanism?

If the former (no of hits) would equiping a bad weapon (plain copper) prove benificial for training purposes?

...Do they ever heal?

My legendary animal caretaker, champion crossbowdwarf/ultra mighty wrestler was sparring in the hopes of gaining more survival skills (ie armour profficiency) when I noticed her sulking in bed with a yellow lower back injury. Is she doomed forever?

If so, I will have to work out a way to build her some variety of wheelchair from which to wreck terrible vengence on the goblins with that machinegun which passes as her crossbow.

(During the last goblin siege she singlehandedly killed over 15 of the green varmints, battering their leader to death with a goblin-bone crossbow.)

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I have a question regarding an odd 'event' that jsut happened to my fortress.

-Its just hit summer in year three and the mayor et al have turned up, but for the last month or so 80% of my dwarves have stood stock still being unable to find the path to whatever it was they want to do, weather its eating, drinking, picking up rocks or in fact anything.  

Theres been no major changes to the fortress and there are no locked doors or raised bridges...

Would anyone know why this is happening or what can be done to stop it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Items lost during abandonment?

In a bid to create a dwarf hero i abandoned a Fortress. My 7th dwarf actually broke the waves of gremlins and Iron men and penitrated the fortress. However, the great majority of goods outside those in workshops has vanished including all the dropped artifacts.. Is this normal?

(..I gathered that the valuable items, platinum steal armour ect migrates to the deepest point (in this case the adamantium pit. But as said there was perhaps a 10th of the manufactured goods there.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Eliminating sandbags

I've several hundred sandbags that where detailed by over enthusiastic craftsdwarves and as a consequence are useless, but still clutter up my stockpiles. My Chasm que is filled with the tonnes of narrow clothing so I thought i might try burning them. However after filling my new sandbag store with magma, the bags seem entirely unaffected.

..This is my first use of magma but I had been under the impression that it would incinerate everything but metal and stone. Am I incorect or are sandbags simply an aberation?

Anyway... can you think of a good way to get rid of them otherwise?

DF Gameplay Questions / Using Crossbows in Mellee

...What skill does this utilize (CC crossbows)? I've always assumed that it utilized either crossbow or wrestling skill, but I've notied that most of my crossbowdwarves who have seen combat are dabling hammerdwarves, which has led me to wonder if that skill is used instead.

Does anyone know the actual answer here?

Sorry to ask -another- question, but I couldn't find the answer to this on the Wiki.

When (some) items are decorated their quality increases, I assume this relates to the total item worth. So if detialing a catapult part makes it as valuable as a plain masterwork catapult it becomes a masterwork catapult part.

If true, does this mean that the detialed items are more usefull than their vanilla counterparts. For instance I've heard that siege engines constructed of good componants are more accurate. Given the difficulty in training goodseige engineers, might simply detialing the parts be a good substitute. Furthermore, how does this work with armour, Ive seen leather armour raise in quality, but not metal. True?
