So I need focus advice, as I'd like to get farther. I'm wordy.
So I've now managed to live into the winter of year 1. But I'm barely scraping by.
I hosed my 1st caravan trade. I want a TRADE confirmation button. I was checking the value of what I had, so I marked it all. and then mis-hit trade when I was trying to do a search. (Then promptly remapped that key off left side) So next year.. well ya.. I got the leather I wanted, but not the food/seeds/booze. So I'm scraping by with 24ish idiots through winter. Merchant easily got a 5x + value. It was only 1900 worth on my side with a 5 appraisal skill.
I am in a temperate area but I'm not high enough for snow, my river didn't freeze this winter.
I'm going to do this with rough elevation numbers showing my 5x5 embark.

So up on the right on the 6 line is a S shaped river.
I went in low, 1 Z level above the 3 dead center.
My issue list.
1) I cannot get a furnace. I've tried to get the damn mason with architect skill into crafter but he always diverts to finishing something. What creates it? I want to get some metal working going.
2) Food - How do you manage plump helmets where some moron doesn't grab the fucking barrel and run off with it. Due to where my soil is. My dining hall/kitchen/still is 20ish tile walk. But someone always walks over and steals the damn barrel. I'm really tempted to create a burrow.
Animals: (I would prefer to keep a shearing grazer for the wool/meat).
6 Turkey hens - 1 Gobbler (I'm planning on using these for food also). They are keeping me fed I believe with the few nests I have
1 Ram- 1 Ewe - 1 male lamb (will slaughter when old enough)
alpaca+llama babies - (both male)
1 reindeer calf
2 yak cows 1 yak bull
1 cow
1 hen 1 rooster + 2 female chicks
goat kid
War dogs and pups and cats + pups. I use the war dogs guard the herd and mom+kids in a pen @ entrance for thieves.
(also do pups from war dogs get auto trained or do I need to train them?)
What do I slaughter. everything (and extra male cats/kittens) but turkey + sheep?+dogs)
3) Well - I read various topics on this. The water is higher than I am.
Do I use pipes or channel it via an tunnel? How wide?
Is it infinite? My idea is to put a grate 1 block back and 1 down from the river level, then channel dig it from above. to break that last block.
Do I need a pump? My farms are kind of on that side. I can then use it to maybe water stone. (though I hate the idea of having to redo that every time).
4) Military - I have hunters, with marksman - I held of training etc cuz I'm trying to do so much.
I will train more once the next migrant wave comes. I have a squad setup. I have a few bone crossbows (they looked cooler) for the 2 that didn't have any out of 4. I have my burrows and panic setup for civs and where archers go. Train my archers? The issue now is I need my hunters killing wildlife for food.
Do I worry about it at this point? Or if something comes just seal myself in and let the archers pick them off. I got my last embark died in the fall from a wereantelope.
5) I have beds, hospital zone. But my leader has broken toes. Never once saw anything done about it. Do I need it better supplied?
Last thing is I'm only down 2-3 levels. I think I'm too spread out from what I can tell. I'm working on down a more z level based system where it's quicker for dwarf to go up/down than across time wise. Focus was getting everything running inside. !!Science!! can come later.
