Other Games / (Re)creating a Garry's Mod addon.
« on: May 30, 2012, 04:35:39 pm »
So for a while now, I've been on the hunt for a decent set of Star Wars ship models for Garry's Mod. Unfortunately, it looks as though there aren't any current ones, and all the older ones have pretty much dropped off the face of the earth. All except for one: the ultimate star wars pack. Unfortunately for me, it's useless. Well, mostly useless in its current state. Instead of formatting the mod folder properly, the creator just dumped all the models, texture files, and what have you into a single .zip. I've managed to put it into something resembling order, and can now spawn the models in-game, but they all have the dreaded black-and-pink checkerboard texture. No matter what I do with them , I simply cannot figure out how to get the textures to display on the models. I've been told to decompile the .MDL files and read the .QC that I get, but according to that everything should be working just fine. Below is the .QC from one of the models, edited only to remove the name of my PC:

Anone have any ideas how to fix this?

Other Games / Loadout: Free To Play FPS in development.
« on: March 19, 2012, 12:05:06 pm »
At first glance, Loadout looks like another cartoony FPS in the vein of Battlefield Heroes or Team Fortress 2. The interesting bit is the weapons: instead of having a bunch of stock weapons to choose from, players get a big grab bag of parts to build their guns/launchers/lasers/whatever from scratch. Beta signups on the website here.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I do believe I'm not welcome here.
« on: February 14, 2012, 01:18:19 pm »
I just used the 'Just Embark' utility to embark on top of one of the new human towns.

Every single citizen was marked as hostile, and ten pages of peasants, craftsmen, and merchants swarmed my starting seven and beat them to death with their bare hands.

God, I already love the new version.

DF Modding / Decent Firearm Mods?
« on: February 11, 2012, 02:01:08 pm »
I know there have been quite a few attempts at adding primitive firearms to DF, with varying degrees of success, but I can't seem to find any of them. Can anyone point me towards a decent, well-balanced gun mod?

Life Advice / Phantom buzzing/ringing
« on: November 22, 2011, 03:31:42 pm »
So lately I've been hearing this wierd buzzing or ringing noise in my ears. As long as there's something else going on in the background, it fades away. but when it gets quiet, the ringing rises to earsplitting levels. It's making it difficult to concentrate, and keeps me from getting to sleep some nights.

Other Games / Against The Wall: indie 2.5d platformer-ish game
« on: November 04, 2011, 05:57:05 pm »
Against The Wall is a funky little indie game, wherein the entire world consists of an infinite vertical wall of irregular square blocks. The goal is to climb up the wall by using a wand to slide bricks in and out, forming stairs and platforms. Your 'goal' comes in the form of some little set-piece - a funky sideways windmill sticking out of the wall, an abandoned platform-village, etc. - which will provide some conveyance up to the next set-piece. There's no backstory that I can find, and I can't for the life of me make it past the third set, so I have no clue what the ultimate goal is.

Life Advice / Re-installing Internet Explorer
« on: November 04, 2010, 09:06:12 pm »
so everyone always tells me how much better Firefox is than Internet Explorer. About a month ago I got fed up with their nagging and decided to give it a try. I've been using it for over thirty days now, and I'll be absolutely honest: I can't stand it, and now I wanna get rid of it. Trouble is, it seems to thwart all of my attempts to re-install IE! Does anybody know how to get around this?

DF Gameplay Questions / Arctic Islands and Trade
« on: September 30, 2010, 12:06:41 pm »
So I genned a new world with a nice, big arctic ocean with a few one-tile islands in the middle. According to the world map, the ocean is totally frozen over around these little islands. Will trade caravans come across the ice to my fort, or am I still isolated?

Other Games / Battlefleet Gothic
« on: January 14, 2010, 08:11:30 pm »
Just bought a decent-sized lot of Guard/Spays Muhreen bits, and was surprised to find a small collection of Imperial ships mixed in with the lot. My question is, has anybody played it? I'd like to know how good it plays before I commit USD $armlegfirstborn to a copy of the rulebook.

So, is it worth the investment?

The small crowd of dwarves scarcely filled the crumbling audience chamber of Labordrums. Among them were dwarves from every corner of the Lance of Wringing, which was to say, not many. The assembled crowd represented the entirety of their once-proud race, now numbering just under two hundred – a crumbling race, in a crumbling fortress, in a crumbling world.

The crowd grew silent, and all eyes turned to Queen Ustuth Painttrammeled, who now mounted the wobbling podium. Pausing a moment to steady herself, she spoke.

“People of the Lance of Wringing… nay, people of dwarvenkind, our time on this world grows short. We have long known that this world is coming to an end. We cannot know how, or why, only that it is coming, and that, I am saddened to say, we are powerless to stop it. My husband – Sodel bless his soul – long feared, as I am sure do all of you, that this would mean the end for our race. Take heart, my brothers and sisters, for there is hope. For though my husband feared the end – Sodel bless his soul – he also envisioned a plan to escape it. I shall leave it to Master Kandor to explain.”

Another dwarf stepped forward. This one was wearing the red garb of an engineer, a color that blended almost perfectly with the vibrant hue of his beard. He mounted the podium, sending it into another fit of swaying. He grabbed the edges of the podium and flung his weight hard to the left. It let out a loud creak, and swayed no more.

“Yes, thank you your Highness. Well, as our philosophers have long known, many other worlds exist beyond our own. These are separated by a vast expanse of emptiness, an expanse I like to refer to simply as ‘space’. Now, before he passed, King Iden – Sodel bless his soul – developed a method by which we dwarves would be able to travel through space to another, better world. He proposed the construction of a large ship, propelled through space by a jet of fuel. The first phase of this project, the fuel, has already been procured. It's something you are all quite familiar with. As the old adage goes, ‘the finest'… well, why don’t you see for yourself? Urist, if you would please demonstrate?”

A third dwarf came forward, wearing heavy armor and a metalsmith’s mask over his face, followed by two more carrying a large cask that was instantly recognizable to all present: Dwarven ale, and of a particularly high quality, at that. They laid the cask on its end and stood back, as Urist cautiously approached the seemingly innocuous beverage. He turned the knob on the spigot, a tiny dribble of amber liquid flowing out onto the lid. Urist leaned in close to the tiny stream of booze, lifted his mask just enough to cup his hands over his mouth, took a deep breath, and bellowed,

SHIIIIIT!

As soon as he had done this, he turned and dove to the floor, just as a jet of flame erupted from the top of the barrel, hurling the iron spigot straight up and embedding it into the ceiling. Dwarves dodged left and right to avoid the barrel as it ricocheted about the room, before it finally slammed headlong into the already decrepit podium, toppling it and sending the Queen and engineer plummeting all of three feet to the floor. When the dust had settled, Queen Ustuth stood, and spoke.

“Ah, yes, Thank you, Master Kandor, for that, uh, ‘demonstration’. Now, what do you have planned for phase two?”

“I have chosen a suitably remote location,” he answered, withdrawing a large roll of parchment from his beard, “at which to begin construction of our vessel, Ucatzuglar Nitom, ‘The Beer-Ship of Planets’ ” He held up the map for all to see:

“Tomorrow morning, a preliminary build team, consisting of myself and six others, shall depart for the site to make an assessment and lay groundwork. Six of you. Now, do I have any volunteers?”

(I genned a ‘smaller’ size world in which all races are reduced to about a hundred or so each. I figured, ‘Hey, there’s a new version coming up soon, why not make one last fort to wrap it all up?’ Post your dwarf’s name, skills, and any supplies you want.)

Let’s send this version out with a bang.

DF Modding / Gem clusters in soil layers?
« on: November 03, 2009, 11:32:08 pm »
Exactly what it says on the tin. I had the idea to mod in small clusters of valuable Meteoric Iron, which could rarely be found in most soil layers. Is it possible to do this?

DF Modding / Comrade Fortress Idea Cesspool
« on: March 30, 2009, 09:21:34 pm »
Because I am laking in this particular department. Throw in any good Soviet/Communist/etc. related things you would like to see in a DF mod.

Obvious:

Dwarves = Comrades
Goblins = Capitalists

Weapons:

Sickle (we already have a hammer, after all.)
AK-47

Ideas:

Bomb-dogs which explode when killed?
RPGs?
Molotov Cocktails?
Various totally whacked-out Soviet inventions

DF Modding / Technical question: Multiple wagons
« on: January 27, 2009, 09:09:42 pm »
Just a quick modding question: If I add several additional types of wagon to the [CREATURE_EQUIPMENT] file, will the merchant's wagons be picked from the list at random? Or will the RNG just pick the first one on the list?

Example: The idea is to go along with a post-apocalyptic mod. Namely, I am trying to make caravans consist of a random hodgepodge of ramshackle vehicles, like technicals, hummers, etc.

So, will it work?

DF General Discussion / Generating a totally screwed-up world
« on: November 25, 2008, 07:03:23 pm »
Yeah, like the title says. I've been trying to create a world in which Mother Nature has taken the laws of physics, stuffed them into a great cosmic blender, and mashed the 'puree' button until it broke. I want scorching deserts smack in the middle of freezing glaciers, huge mountain peaks in the middle of the ocean, etc. But every attempt I have made has ended up with either infinite rejects, or a world that looks entirely too... normal. Can anyone point me in vaguely the right direction? Any help is much appreciated.
