Many years ago, a Great Calamity arose from the deepest pits of this world, lasting many a year before heroes of the land finally overcame it. This is the tale of that Calamity, and the supports who necessitated those great heroes on their legendary journey.

A tale of honor, valiance, and profit.

Form and Function: Adventures in Animism

OOC Thread.
CHAPTER 0: A Hero(?)'s Beginning

The song of an ancient bard fills the air, accompanied by a cacophony of creaking and groaning, as the very bar you sit at despairs at it's existence. The wind blasts through the open windows, blowing sand into your hair, and drinks. As you look around, you are met with only the sight of the drunken bartender, a miserable looking warty toad, who, ironically enough, is the one telling his troubles to the only other patron in the bar. She is not listening, and you are unsure if she is still alive, as her jet-black feathered body is missing patches, and her eyes have rolled into her skull. Again, bitterly ironic, is the crow picking at her crow corpse.

The other tables could barely be called such, as they have been worn down through the endless torrents of sand and time. An oddly large, misshapen lump of cheese seems to be singing, if you could call it that. The sound seems to blind your ears of the horrendous sandstorm, but is it really any better? She smells, too. Which doesn't necessarily help the smell of corpse and beer, which one could not easily distinguish even in their best moment.

Yet here you are, sitting at a table with your companions, drinking what you have been told is beer, and waiting for the sandstorm to pass. The bounty board piques your interest, one of the few things not torn to shreds in this place. A single bounty lies on it, and boy oh boy do you need the money.

You take in the whole scenery, and the urge to collapse into tears is hard to fight. But, push on. For death is inevitable, but you can only know if you try.

Form and Function: Adventures in Animism

IC Thread.

In the primordial sea of stars, universes are born and destroyed by Time. It creates billions of galaxies, filled with lifeless planets, and lifeless stars. Time cannot create Life, and this is why it created The Universe. A singular entity to enter universes of Time's creation, and use it's powers to bring life into existence. The universes had started being something. Something more than an empty space designed for doom.

But all must come to an end. Thus, The Universe had to create Death, a force which destroyed all the Life it had created. This caused The Universe great strife, having to create something to destroy what it had once made, but what else could it do? It was a servant to Time, and that would never change...

In one of these many universes, a certain kind of life existed. In this universe (one of The Universe's personal favorites), all sapient beings (referred to as Shells) possess Cores. These Cores determine what a being's physical appearance will be like, and affect it down to the atomic level. These Cores follow a few rules, in that they cannot die (but may age if their form allows it), they cannot be sentient beings, there cannot be more than one Core per Shell, and that the Core must be somewhere in the universe that the Shell will go sometime in their life. It is thought that the Cores are placed randomly in the universe, but this is not the case. However, like many of The Universe's subtle machinations, it goes unnoticed. These rules have been broken in the past, but stand true nearly all of the time. When a Shell is fatally wounded, they will rebirth at their Core. This allows them to be essentially immortal, as long as their Core is not destroyed. However, they retain any non-fatal wounds, which must be healed through other means. This means that Shells are notoriously hard to kill, and wars are waged for millennia. The re-birthing process takes some time, however, so there is a period of waiting. Shells must still satisfy needs, however, if their Core requires it, such as eating, drinking and sleeping. All beings possess some amount of Aspects, which are based on what that being has done or is made of.

These beings live on various planets, and are extremely wide-ranging, from sentient blobs to giant creatures made of teeth. On one of these very planets, in a small, unnoticeable town on the western side of the great all-encompassing continent of Gaea, a group of adventurers reside within a Tavern. And not just any tavern, no, but the Rusted Toad itself. Famous for its collection of Ales that are guaranteed to incite projectile vomit, the Rusted Toad is about as low as you can get. Not even seedy, because the likes of those who visit seedy bars are too upper class for the Rusted Toad. No, only one kind of person visits here.

A dirt-poor, inexperienced, newbie adventurer. Which is why you are here. With your group of companions, you hope to find great riches, the secrets of the universe, or something. Really, a better beer would do it for you, but hey, aim for the moon so you can miss and inevitably fall crashing down back to earth, but hopefully in a place better than where you are now.

But that is for later. For now, a simple question will do. Who are you?

Welcome to Form and Function, a game based off of a lore universe I had sitting around, combined with some more complex systems that I want to test out. This will be a mix of plot-based RPing and D&D style adventuring, hopefully striking a balance between the two. Probably not, but one can hope.

Darkness...

Blackness...

Floating in the void, the absence of anything. You do not exist. You struggle for breath, but there is no air to breathe, nor is there a you to breathe it.

Oh, but what's this? Something... is here, with you?

They appear to be waiting for you, as far as you can tell from the expressionless line that makes up their face. Their body appears to be formed of ambient noise, not quite looking real, although definitely there.

They await your answer. Questions appear in your head.

What is your name?
What is your phylactery?
(Phylactery can be anything that isn't an abstract concept or alive. Can be changed later.)
What was your profession, and why are you here?

You have a feeling there's more than a few details missing, but at least you can attempt to answer these.

......Light.......

You seem to have just woken up in a peculiar predicament, one which makes little sense to you. As far as you can tell you are stuck in a large sack, with a smaller sack put over your head, with only the tiny holes allowing any sort of light through. You can see a small area around you, but nothing enough to make a difference.

You also seem to be a bit muddled in the head, too. Better get that sorted out first.

Try to remember your name.

Maybe after you've remembered who you are, you can remember your Core and hobbies.
The hobbies part seems the least important to you, but you should probably have at least a couple of things to keep you going.

((Core can be any object.))

Life Advice / Coming Out; How to?
« on: March 13, 2017, 04:42:20 am »
Hey there.

After a long time of thinking, and waiting, and coming out to my parents and some others, and being a part of communities, the time may have come to come out at school.

The situation is obviously a lot more complex than I can, or am willing to, express through this post.

But, in short, I'm trans, and I want to join the girl's softball team. My counselor has talked to the sports office, and they are cool with it, plus the school has policies in place for changing uniform.

That's not really the issue. I really want this, and I'm sure of that. But the fear of other people, how my teachers and classmates will react... That's scary.

I'm scared enough to post in the Life Advice thread, so that should give you some sort of idea. Considering I rarely post in this board, it's pretty big.

You awaken to the sound of whirring as the tour-bot flies past. Another day behind these bars, and the day your food has run out. This is probably a good sign for you to stop sitting around and start doing something about the situation. Or not, who knows? At any rate, your enclosure is standard stuff, iron bars with a food trough, some trees or respective environment to your animal. A near-empty water trough sits next to the food, and the door which food used to come through sits there, menacingly. Menacingly? Well, it has this red light behind it and everything, it looks pretty darn menacing. You don't really see any other way out, unless you looked around a bit further. Outside of the cage, you can see the few other cages around you, filled with a wide menagerie of creatures. Weird. But, it's fairly dark, and it seems to be very early in the Morning.
((All the players start in the same area.))

You have 6 Major Actions left for today. You have unlimited Minor Actions remaining. You are sated and slaked. You are wide awake.
Quote from: Handy hint about Turns
Turns work in major actions and minor actions.

MAJOR ACTIONS TAKE 3 HOURS
MINOR ACTIONS ARE SMALL AMOUNTS OF TIME
ALL MAJOR ACTIONS ARE TAKEN ONCE ALL PLAYERS HAVE GIVEN THEIR MAJOR ACTIONS FOR THAT TURN

Major actions take 3 hours, and there are a set amount of Major actions each day. These will be taken altogether for each turns, one for each player, and while players wait for others to catch up, they may perform minor actions.

Minor actions are taken as they come, and are most things that don't take particularly long. You might want to use minor actions before performing a major action, as they have to be plans for a decent amount of time.

Each turn is one Major action and {x} minor actions.

Combat is formulated so that people plan out 3 actions, and attempt to use them. If nobody is dead/incapacitated by the end of the match, another 3 turns are planned. I will simulate the actions that you plan, and the enemies action. Whoever initiated combat plans their actions when they initate combat, and the defender reacts to these actions.

Days are divided into three sections: Morning, Afternoon, and Evening, after which you may need to go to sleep, depending on your species. Each section is 6 hours of in-game time in Summer, five in Autumn, four in Winter, five again in Spring, then back to Summer.
One AP is equal to 3 hours. Therefore, you get (in total) 6 AP in summer, 5 in spring/autumn and 4 in winter.

Some actions don't necessarily take a whole 3 hours, and will be Minor Actions. I will take these as they come, and these include walking, talking, and interacting with minor things in the world.

Major Actions (that take a large amount of time) will be confirmed after each person has posted one, and each turn can consist of multiple minor actions, but one Major Action.
Major actions are overarching goals, and will essentially consist of a series of rolls and minor actions strung together to achieve a certain goal.

Life is a process that acts in cycles, of creation and destruction. One life ends, another begins. One generation ceases, another rises. The world has ended. The reasons as to why are unknown to you, as you are but an animal. What matters to you now, is finding shelter, food, and maybe a home. Oh, there's also these new thoughts. Thoughts of creation, and invention. Thoughts of scavenging, and exploring. Thoughts of communication. Thoughts that once you were not capable of. However, that is irrelevant. What is relevant, is finding a way out of this zoo. Whatever comes next, is up to fate.

What's this? I'm reviving the first forum game I hosted ever? Wow! What a miracle. I really ran out of ideas. Offspring is a game about survival in a post-apocalypse world, as a wild animal. However, mysterious intelligence has been granted to you, and you now possess knowledge of creation and invention, boy howdy. Also the ability to speak to other animals. Wowzas! Who knows what you'll find out there, in the wastes? Maybe you'll start a family, maybe you'll discover secrets, maybe you'll [REDACTED]! The possibilites are nearly endless, as this is mostly a freeform game. PvP and Co-operation are included in those possiblities.

But how do we play?, I don't hear you ask. Well, that's simple.

>Blackness...

>You can't seem to remember anything, but you faintly recall a ringing sound. It sticks in your mind like tepid sap, so you do your best to ignore it. A faint skull shape appears in the haze of your awakening.

>Slowly, you regain your senses. The figure becomes clearer, and you hear a faint grunting sound.

>You also seem to recall the faint taste of starch, and it sticks your tongue to the roof of your mouth like glue.

>Slowly, you regain your vision. A figure stands in front of you, with a horned skull for a head, and a red emblem emblazoned upon it's chest.

>With another grunt, it approaches you.

>It speaks, and somehow you understand it.

Sun, sand, the warm tropical breeze, and the slow crash of the timid ocean... Sounds pretty good, right?

Well, that's what you had hoped for upon accepting this free cruise.
"Come join us for a FREE BEACH HOLIDAY!!!" They said.
"Have the TIME OF YOUR LIFE!!!" They said.

What they failed to mention, was that it was a cruise ship owned by an incompetent sailor, and signing the Terms and Conditions (who reads them anyway?) made all your insurances null and void. Weird thing to put in the agreement, but hey, it was a weird agreement.

So, on the cruise ship, you had a wonderful time meeting some new people, before disaster struck, and boom, you're stuck on an island in the middle of god-knows-where. But, we'll start from the cruise ship. Just to get you familiar.

Well, firstly you have to fill out this application form for the cruise 'n' all.

This Island's a pretty big place. Who knows what you'll find?

Couldn't see a thread already open for this, so decided to start one. I've just picked up the full version of the game on steam, after playing the kickstarter demo some years ago. Improvements are visible, and it's still really fun! The combo system is decent enough to allow for good combat, and the pacing is well done.

Thoughts, post 'em below.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Arachnophobia - Welcome to Arachnisle - IC

A beautiful day... The sun is shining, and the waves are calmly splashing along the coast that surrounds Charak Settlement. You have finally arrived, after a long plane trip, and a slightly shorter bus ride to the town. But, being here now makes it all worthwhile. The sights, the smells... and the sounds of town, coming into audible range. You see it now, through the faded windscreen of the lemon bus. A bustling town of activity.... well, with about four or five people rushing about, preparing festivities for your arrival. Banners, balloons, and confetti rain down upon the bus as you enter, the townsfolk looking as excited as ever to have five new residents. The bus drops you off in the town centre, before driving off again. You are met by five friendly faces, three of which speak.

"Hi! I'm Irathil. But you can call me whatever. Welcome to Charak Settlement! We're really excited to have you here. We hope having some Charak Ranchers will actually get this place some attention for once, and some more residents. If you ever need any help, or just have some general questions, feel free to come and ask me! Most days I'll be in my house, which is just in the centre of town. I'm sort of the temporary mayor of this place."

"Oh! Hello there, people. I am Yvonne, and you may find me on the coast, in my restaurant house most of the time. I can sell you some nice food, or teach you how to cook on your own! For a price, of course. Hehehehe~."

"Hi there. I'm Jeremiah. We're so happy to have you here. I'm the town's resident grocer, and you can usually find me in my shop, just beside Irathils' house. If you want to learn anything about gardenin', feel free to come in and ask! I also sell general supplies which restock every week, so be sure to check in regularly!"

The two others nearly speak, but you are soon lead to your new Charak Ranches, just outside of town. They are all at different ends of the pentagonal shape the town forms, and each has the same amenities. One Charak stable, a saddle, water/food troughs, hay piles, farmland, plough, hoe, shovel, pickaxe, axe, workbench, and well to gather water from. You are also given a few seeds each by Jeremiah, which are apparently turnip seeds. You are also given some basic cooking equipment, to go with the kitchen that is included in your houses, that are alongside your barns. From here, it is up to you what you do. You have a lasso, and can begin Charak-hunting, or you could just start gardening, or looking for resources. The island is yours! So go ahead and explore.

((NPCs, you can go around and interact with players, or perform actions of your own.))

Hello! As you may have noticed, in my sig there is a link to my twitch channel. I have recently acquired streaming software, and will be holding streams either on request, or every 5:00pm Friday (New Zealand). I'll probably be playing a new game each week, and do a variety of things. I'll also listen to any requests, if anyone wants to suggest something, and I have it/It's freely attainable.

I'll also be hosting weekly events! These will probably just be me playing a certain game in a certain way, but if anyone has any suggestions, feel free!

Current Event/Game: Don't Starve Reign of Giants travelling to Shipwrecked.

Also, No Man's Sky comes out soon, and I'll be streaming that whenever I play it most likely, so check back regularly!

As the title suggests, I currently lack a camera and microphone, so until I get the required software, it will just be no-commentary gameplay with me occasionally talking in chat. I also do not have in-stream chat, so it will go blank while chatting.
But, it's a start! Anything you want me to play, suggest, and we shall see where this goes.

In a land mostly known as Arachnisle, there lives a small community in a town called Charak Settlement. Creative, I know. They live, work, play, and sleep, just as any other community does. But, they're community lifestyle revolves around one core aspect. Charak ranching. The creatures known as Charaks inhabit the entire island, and can be vicious if not treated properly. They take the form of giant insectoids, or arachnids, sometimes even reptiles. But, there are still more to be discovered. Citizens known as Charak Ranchers go out in groups, or on their own to tame these beasts. They then take them to their ranches, where they care for them and train their skills, until bringing them to the monthly Charak Fair. This is where the Ranchers show off their best and brightest, in feats of strength, skill, and fashion. You are a newly recruited Charak Rancher, and have just received your official licence! With it, you are also granted a free barn and farmland area. Here, you will bring up a team to win you the jackpot! If your rivals don't do so first, that is...

Creative Projects / DigitalDemon's Place Where Writing Goes Thread
« on: July 27, 2016, 07:00:45 pm »
Well, after looking over Cinder's quite magnificent one-drawing-a-day thread, I decided to steal the idea   modify the concept to fit in with my lack of drawing ability.

So, this will be the thread where I post any writings or game design ideas I happen to come up with in the coming days.

If I'm busy or for some other reason do not update this thread daily, I will add to my Write-O-Meter™, and write an extra story or section of story for each day I have missed.

Also, to develop a habit of writing shorter stories, I'm going to be starting with a limit of 500750 words, but an extra 100 words for each day in my Write-O-Meter™ . I will, however, if a concept or story idea captures my or your attention, I'll continue it longer, as I do enjoy writing longer stories.

I don't imagine this going very far, as writing is a hard media to convey on the internet, and it's a lot harder to tell people to read 3 pages of writing than to tell someone to look at a picture.

Obviously this is neither a fault of the medium or the audience, it's just sort of the way of human nature.
Also, if I don't post for more than 2 days, PM me, because I may have forgotten.
