DF Modding / 1600s-1700s Colonialism mods ideas
« on: February 06, 2019, 04:54:56 pm »
Over the last week, Ive actually been thinking about it and realized how cool it would actually be if there was an overhaul set of mods that made it possible to recreate how it felt to be the first colonies in the americas but on randomly generated continents. Of course, one may say that dwarf fortress sort of already is that considering how in fortress mode, you are indeed a bunch of colonists going to new lands, but there is potential to add in more, like charters, politics from the homeland and other stuff.

My question is would this even be practical goal? I made this post just for the discussion of the possibilities.

DF Modding / New armor types
« on: December 13, 2016, 07:17:36 pm »
I have an idea.

Imagine if we got all sorts of armor components from the medieval era, like armets, sallets, bevors, tassets, lamellar, platemail, gambesons, etc, and put them in Dwarf Fortress? Along with more varied weaponry?

With gambesons, people can create simple, quick and cheap militia armor that doesnt look dull in its name and probably can be stronger than leather armor. You get what Im saying?

A gambeson.

A German sallet with a bevor.

However, I dont know how to mod, and this is just a suggestion to be put out there.

DF General Discussion / Do you punish your dwarves for random things?
« on: March 25, 2016, 07:44:22 pm »
I was working on my jungle fortress and I noticed that most of my alcohol just consisted of lychee wine and rice beer, with very few others. So I checked to see if the dwarves were bored of the alcohols, and one of them, Lor Kadolarban, was one of these dwarves.

Lor was a normal dwarf, but then I noticed his ideals about independence, freedom, and friendship.

"He personally finds the ideas of independence and freedom somewhat foolish and does not care about friendship."

Well Lor, being a Brony overseer, I flipped out. I quickly changed his nickname to "FRIENDSHIP HATER" and locked him in a burrow inside of an empty upcoming office room.

He will spend a good portion of his life there, and if he dies of me not letting him out to eat food, than so be it. If he doesnt like friendship in my fortress (Which btw has a mudstone pyramid that sacrifices giant anoles and honey badgers:stained with blood and vomit, as well as decorated with bodies. Also the place is teeming with ghosts and dead bodies of grazers I forget to put into the pastures. Maybe I should sacrifice him), he has no place in it.

Ironically, although he doesnt care about friendship, he still has more people he's on friendly terms with than passing acquaintances.

DF Suggestions / Tactics
« on: March 11, 2016, 12:10:10 am »
Tactics could be something that can be made functional in the game. However, how I explain how this will go out would probably lag many people's computers, so it could be a good idea to make it sort of "Do you want squad leaders/goblins/etc to use tactics Y/N?"

Anyhoot, I imagine that you can allow your troops to be commanded independently by their squad/militia commander (Maybe even a general). For example, Urist McTactic is traveling with 6 speardwarves and he is novice tactician. There is a line of 20-30 goblins supplemented by a few trolls. What could happen is that he makes a tactical mistake and tells his unit to charge instead of letting them come to him or splitting his forces into two. His squad ends up killing the goblins, but at a cost. You can tell where Im going with this. While also including this, you could also have your squad commanders "coordinate" and depending on their skill levels, a dice will roll to see how good they do together. So for example, a spear company of 6 dwarves coordinates with a company of 3 marksdwarves. The novice MD commander and the competent SD commander manage to work together fairly nicely, and by doing so, the spear company is constantly covered by marksdwarves who travel with the speardwarves, shooting over the speardwarves as they march in a line towards battle, i.e, covering fire.

How will they train is what I imagine to be through the use of "sandtables": Simulations of a battle on a table with sand that can be changed up to reflect terrains and have little figures be there for the movement of troops for the learning officer. I imagine this to be an inside thing, compared to the other thing I had in mind: Live exercises. Live exercises could be coordinated training drills between squads. In addition to training weapon skills, armor skills, etc, the commanders gain tactic skills. However, inorder to balance this, you'd have to make it so that the Tactics skill goes up slow and steady.

It would be cool if the dwarves could form a shield wall and advance, with some lighter dwarves forming a screenforce ahead while marksdwarves watch over from the cliff's above. However, I am sure this would be really hard to code, but if you could do it and it works, that would be brilliant.

DF General Discussion / What is your worst military disaster?
« on: March 09, 2016, 10:19:16 am »
What is your worst military disaster that ever happened to you in the entire time you have played dwarf fortress in general?

My worst was when I made what I called my first "real" working fortress. Ofcourse, it was in my clueless stage and the fortress and its workings itself was flawed. I did not know how to give people labors, thinking that if I didnt have an armorer, I couldnt make armor with the rather abundant pieces of hematite that inhabited my stockpiles. I did, however, have a metalcrafter who created metal swords for my military. At the time, I believed that until I got an armorer, I had to make do with what I had and keep my troops constantly training; I became reliant on the opinion that their training would make up for their lack of proper military dress. I ended up giving them layers of coats and cloth to atleast give them something of a uniform and make a standard equip. Later on into my military program, I believe I traded some wooden crafts for a boar leather armor piece, which I gave to my militia commander. I saw it as a status symbol for him, a ballistic vest to protect the leader. But then...

The goblins came. They came better prepared then I thought they would, with atleast 3-4 archers traveling with them. I muster my troops using burrows (Also didnt know how to use the squad screen) and they appear at the entrance. The goblins come within sight and my troops charge forward. Their archers let loose and one of my 4 sword dwarves is cut down. I quickly queue them to go back deeper into the fortress. However, my militia commander got hit, fell against a wall, and got shot at, but not killed. I've kept the thought that his armor helped him survive. Meanwhile, I take the oppurtunity of the goblins being closer to the entrance, sending out my remaining two sword dwarves who manage to cut through the goblins, their training paying off for that moment. We won, but the worst is to come. Finally, I get an armorer and we begin producing iron bars. After finishing that order, I quickly send my armorer to get straight to making iron armor. Before he was down though, the goblins came back. They were better prepared, and yet again, I send my troops up, albeit deeper inside the halls of the fortress, which turned out to be a bad move. They were far enough away from the corner that got deeper into the heart from the entrance that the goblin archers would have enough time to cut down our 3 remaining soldiers, militia commander included. I begin to panic, and I designate a new burrow deeper in the fortress, but it was too late. The goblins chased my crowds down the halls and the walls were stained with blood, vomit and floors were adorned with endless piles of guts, limbs, and the bodies of dwarves. Only one child managed to escape the fortress.

DF General Discussion / My military reformation
« on: March 08, 2016, 08:50:22 pm »
Currently, my fortress, oddly named Ropegleamed and my parent civ The Turquoise Syrups, has a tried and proved military. However, I have the feeling my 3 spearmasters and hammerlord will soon become overwhelmed, so I've devised that I create a light infantry squad which will consist of 7 sworddwarves and one hammerdwarf with iron chain mail shirts and leggings, as well as iron helms and leather high boots with a wooden shield and iron sword. My question is...

Would this be necessary?

DF General Discussion / I just killed a Roc...What should I do?
« on: March 05, 2016, 04:56:36 pm »
I dont know how, but I just survived a roc attack. My troops are all legendary, but I expected them to be killed one by one O.o. Maybe its this thing where every fortress I have, my military are as sharp as what an adamantine scalpel would be.

Anyhow, I've already made a memorial (mausoleum)  to the death of my first militia commander who got overwhelmed by goblin hammermen, swordsman, bowmen and recruits. Its lined with solid gold walls in the inside, 4 iron statues, 2 gold statues guarding the 2 iron doors, a golden chest and an iron sarcophagus (Having dreams of putting a magma pull ontop of it).

Should I make a better testament to the killing of the accursed thing?
