for the purpose of waterworking, this would solve many problems.
in many cases the area doesnt allow for the creation of pums to dry a river to create a barrier, so this would solve that problem.

DF Modding / [MODDING] question: change max book amount in bookcase

just a short one:
can i change the maximum amount of books/scrolls in a bookcase to maybe 10?

it always bugged me that no matter how small i build my library, it will be impossible to fill it up with books.
havin 100 books sounds like a megaproject's goal. so having a giant library with over 100 bookshelves sounds like a mad dwarf's megaproject.

So on my unending search for architectural inspiration, i came along this beauty:

 and i did the maths:
 it would definitely fit into a 16x16 embark
(maybe even into a 12x16 if you crop the long entryway or a 12x12 if cropping the areas without detailed plans available)
i guess we got a new MEGAPROJECT! where can i get a good PC for free?

edit: tried 16x16 and upon hittin embark DF froze and i had to kill the process.
trying 12x12 next.

i like the style - can we make a tileset of it?

one of my latest favourites is the circular slope from the hohenzollern castle.
I built a whole fort mimicking the whole castle a few times in DF and it is quite useful.

pros:
- making the path 4 tiles wide allows for trade wagons to pass and having the inner path trapped
- the enemy is attackable by archers from different angles at all their way into the fort
- rooms under the ramps can be used for stockpiling the corpses and refuse from invaders out of view of trespassers
- long way in for invaders
- mutiple locations for drawbridges/gates
- if carved into hilltop, the overworld buildings can be carved into the stone, instead of building walls/floors
- can prevent cave-adaption
- court as outside area for aboveground crops and for grazing animals

cons:
- long setup time
- only works on hilltops or carved into a mountainside.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / how to get a very steep world?

i need a world with more cliffs for some projects and so far the general worldgen never produced such.
i'd like ~30% of the coasts to be steep cliffs, random tiny steep mountains, but also mountainranges - less shallow hills.
is there a way of getting that?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / how to create a dwarven arena? ideas?

I've never created an arena before and haven't found much about it, although many mention their forts having arenas.
sooo i searched for pictures and mostly found modern arenas/football stadiums instead. :(

so far i only know that one would need a way to put (fighters and) monsters/enemies into the arena without risking them to break lose again and wreak havok.
this can be done either by having entry chambers disconnected from the fighting ground via drawbridge-gates and placing them into built cages there, releasing them via laver OR having those entrychambers and dropping them in from above, which might prove risky.
also some way of retrieving items and/or cleaning should be there.

what are your preferred designs, what are the technically unnecessary necessities to you?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / are rooms with multiple zlevels useful?

is there any use for rooms with 2 or 3 zlevel high roofs?
in many other games, i would consider for example a temple with an outer ring with pillars and a few stairs down into the center which has a high ceiling as being better/more glorious/prestigoues than just a one floor temple.
does this work in DF too?

when using a tileset/graphicset, the zoom to location has a huge offest to the actual event/creature.
this even prevented me from linking pressureplates to a bridges.

DF Gameplay Questions / how do AI controlled forts behave?

i guess you know how you can leave a fort and do a new embark. but what i wonder about is how the fort will proceed then.
do the dorfs use airlocks? do they call everyone in during a siege and close the necessary gates/bridges? or do they just keep existing? is it possible to build forts that survive 10 years after you left them?
