DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Reclaiming with 63 dwarves :S

OK, so I've got two questions, first off if I reclaim a site will it always be in the exact same location as the original 7 dwarves caravan started in? The reason I ask this is because somehow they have started out in the middle of a brook between two very steep cliffs, caravan and all just sitting on top of the 7/7 water.

Secondly I went to reclaim the site hoping for a different starting area and selected a embark options that I had just used for my original 7 (as I'd saved them) it gives me a warning about a certain meat I had selected no longer being available? Ok I think, I'll just hit e and embark without that meat right? WRONG! What I end up with is 21 hammer dwarves, 21 sword dwarves and 21 axe dwarves.... wth happened?

DF Modding / Are buildings hard coded?

I'm curious after looking through the RAW's as to wether or not buildings, and their productions are hardcoded? The reason I ask is that I'm looking at making another race, or atleast adapting one of the current races to be playable and want them to be able to produce bows at the bowyer, rather than xbows, and various other little bits like that.

I also presume skills are hardcoded, so my bow using race would need to have it tacked onto the xbow skill? How would that effect the weapon screen in military, does ordering them to take an xbow translate to them taking a bow and must the same be done for any changes like that (adding glaives as well as spears etc)?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / No magma in the Location Finder

I've had three maps where the finder has entirely failed to find any Magma Pipes or Magma Pools, I just produced a map with at least 15 visible volcanoes and still it has failed to find anywhere with magma. So basically I'm presuming its bugged for finding magma, anyone else come across the same issue?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Above ground castle.

OK, so I'm looking at designing a primarily above ground castle with an underground cellar/mining operation. My question is this, is there anyway to build walls other than with the very tedious 4 buttom combination that places only 1 tile? Also, in order to build "rooves" for my castle do I simply construct floores on the Z lvl above my walls?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / No sherrif / captain of the guard?

Ok, so I just went through the entire sherrif phase without actually having someone assigned the job. It didn't seem to have any negative affects, and now I have the chance to assign a captain of the guard I'm wondering if there is any real reason to post someone to this position?

All the stories I've heard of the dwarves of the law is them beating the living crap out of 2/3 of the entire population which isn't really something I want to happen. So does anyone know if there will be issues later on without having anyone posted to this position?

Is there a way I can get my dwarves to use wooden/stone weapons to train in order to prevent injury, rather than using their regular steel weapons.

Also, what lvl wrestling should I get my dwarves too before I start them on weapon training (they are all wearing steel plate/helms, but with low armor skill).

Lastly, I've heard alot of talk about seiges broken in g, any truth to this?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / First Liason Dies

OK, so my first liason went mad and died in my fort before i had the chance to request an anvil with the next caravan. Annoying but not a huge deal I thought since there was a chance i'd get one anyway and if i didn't then i could just request one with the next laiason.

Two dwarf caravans later and no liason and no anvil........ so my question is, does another ever come? or once your liason is dead is that pretty much it?

Also, my first migrant wave was 22 dwarves, I improved my fortress wealth six times over the next year and only got 6 migrants... is this low number normal?

P.S. I'm waiting for the human caravan atm and hoping for an anvil there.

Is there any way to get my military dwarves to drop their damn copper items and start collecting the fresh steel/iron items that I have started to produce?
