DF General Discussion / Crypthammer - A Reclamation (D&D 5e)
« on: December 29, 2015, 09:57:10 pm »
Hello, various people from Bay12. I have created a oneshot (though it may evolve) D&D 5e adventure that has been entirely inspired by Dwarf Fortress. I suppose I thought I'd open it up to you all first, as you're more familiar with the surrounding "lore" of Toady's random world/history generator. The adventure will involve four dwarves, sent by their kingdom's capital, to locate a missing outpost liasion and delve secure lodgings and await an incoming migrant wave. The fortress has gone quiet for several seasons now, though it was originally founded by dwarven exiles who had violated the laws of their civilization. Additional information can be found here, if you should wish to apply: https://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/37658/crypthammer-a-reclamation

More importantly, beyond just advertising my D&D game, I guess I'm curious. Is it a good idea to use Dwarf Fortress to randomly create worlds, histories, magical beasts, etc., for classic pen and papers? I've found it -relatively- easy to adapt D&D 5e to the Dwarf Fortress world, through various magic restrictions and the like. It's also a damn sight easier to create a story when everything has names and even stories within the Legends Viewer that I can adapt and add onto. I hope folks take an interest in this, although, this will be my first time DM'ing a proper game...

DF Gameplay Questions / How Do I Get On Santa's Bad Side?
« on: December 22, 2015, 03:40:24 pm »
Because I require coal and flux to forge steel, if I am reading the wiki correctly. And even sites with multiple surface and deep metals, as well as flux stone don't seem to often have coal.

So how do I piss Santa off in Dwarf Fortress, so as to acquire his extremely useful gift of coal?

DF Community Games & Stories / A Community Teamspeak; Open to the Public!
« on: December 19, 2015, 01:53:08 am »
Hello folks. A friend of mine and I are avid fans of Dwarf Fortress, but we're not really forum going types. However, we have loads of fun seeing other design philosophies and doing succession forts!

So, the gaming community he runs usually plays strategy games from developers such as Paradox, but we figured we could get a good bunch of folks together to do some serious dwarfing.

If you'd like to check it out, here's the IP: 173.199.64.243:9144

We might start a community succession fort soon, so that'd be fun to include all you guys and actually have some verbal communication!

DF Gameplay Questions / Do single tile doors cause significant lag?
« on: December 19, 2015, 01:45:32 am »
My friend and I are doing a succession fortress. I prefer aesthetically appealing fortresses while he prioritizes efficiency. This leads to obvious design disagreements.

He likes to build long hallways, three tiles wide, extending out from an open 3x3 U/D staircase. I think this looks horribly ugly and immediately build walls around the staircase and single tile doors.

I argue this is also for security purposes, because locking down entire z-levels with doors and hatches is damn useful. He says he'd get an FPS boost of +10 if we didn't use so many single tile doors.

Does this make a significant difference, either way? What also causes lag? We have forty or so animals and quite a bit of the fort is covered in blood/vomit. I think this might cause more lag than the door designs... Thoughts?

DF Suggestions / Ents
« on: December 18, 2015, 11:20:11 pm »
I remember hearing somewhere, long ago before I ever joined the forums, that Ents were a planned creature in Dwarf Fortress. I can't recall where, and I haven't been able to find much on it. Am I going crazy? Hopefully not! If this was a planned feature, or even if it wasn't, it seems relatively easy for Toady to create a wooden Bronze Colossus-like creature. However, I think the attack should be triggered by something suitable, such as an industry heavy fortress that has cut down all the trees on a "woodland" or "heavily forested" map area. I imagine how the elves get angry with dwarves for cutting down trees would be a similar sort of trigger... Hmm... Is this idea decent? My first actual suggestion, sorry if it's half-baked.
