Alright, I see you. Looking at that title of the thread like "let's play? I get that, but what the fuck is a shin megami tonsai and a Raidou? Well, we'll get there eventually. I had this series history written up but I scrapped it because you really don't need to know all that. Suffice it to say that Shin Megami Tensei means something like True Goddess Resurrection, Devil Summoner is a spin off of SMT, and Raidou a spinoff of that. The series overall is also ancient, the first game in the overall series being from 1987. There's lots of demons, usually summoned, sometimes digitally, sometimes with TUBES.

No guarantees on how long this series will go or take, I'm in my first year of college and it's been a not great year overall.

Play With Your Buddies / Let's Rule in King of Dragon Pass
« on: December 09, 2017, 02:17:11 pm »

"King of Dragon Pass is a 1999 strategy/simulation computer game published by A Sharp. Set in the fictional world of Glorantha, it depicts the lives and fortunes of one of several barbarian clans, settling the untamed lands of Dragon Pass over the course of several decades. The clans bear some similarities, such as fyrds and lawspeakers, to the Iron Age Nordic peoples."-Wikipedia

In other words, it's a choose your own adventure game with sim elements where you control a tribe of Germanic-style colonists. The setting of Glorantha, also mentioned above, is very expansive and can be read about more here.

I'm going to be playing the Steam version, which is a port of the mobile version of the game. There are some new events, but the main differences are in the UI, which is a lot less thematic in this version.

Also, yes, I'm totally doing this because the Choice of Rebels LP reminded me of it.

Let's get to it.

Total War is a series of turn-based strategy games, mainly known for its real-time battles. Medieval 2 is an entry into the series notable most for having the more modern mechanics of the later Total War games, but not the reduced modding support and the mutilated trait system that the later games have.
Stainless Steel is a mod that ups that trait system to a degree in a way that is only really surpassed by the super-mod Europa Barbororum (which we are not playing because EB2 is still rather crash-prone and likely will be for quite a while.)

The Houses of the Land

"Look, my dears, all the lineages in the world (attend to what I am saying) can be reduced to four sorts. There are those that had humble beginnings and went on spreading and extending themselves until they had attained surpassing greatness,"

"and those that had great beginnings and maintained them and still maintain and uphold the greatness of their origin."

"Again, there are those that from a great beginning have ended in a point like a pyramid, having reduced and lessened their original greatness till it has come to nought, like the point of a pyramid, which, relatively to its base or foundation, is nothing."

"And then there are those--and it is the kind that are the most numerous--that have had neither an illustrious beginning nor a remarkable mid-course, and will have an end without a famous name, like an ordinary plebeian line." - Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes.

The most important part of this LP is the titular twelve houses, the idea being that we'll have twelve distinct houses in our empire which will add more continuity to the succession. Since Medieval 2 doesn't really track the dynasties of nobles after a couple generations the nobility feels completely unrelated and disparate, and this will hopefully fix it. This will be, unless someone decides to make a sub-mod, an out of game thing. Don't worry, you don't really have to participate in this if you play and you don't have to submit a report on the bloodlines after a turn either: I'm going to be keeping track of them myself.

The King's Choice of Treasure

Stainless Steel has quite few settings to choose from, and I don't really have strong opinions on any of them besides the eras and Grim Reality; because while GR adds quite a bit to the traits, it also adds in a system of banishment and punishment for the nobility which is quite arbitrary and unclear. I say we probably shouldn't use it, but I'm willing to use it if people really want to try it out. Just don't blame me when "the king" decides that a very good general has been a very bad boy and needs to be permanently relocated to sub-Saharan Africa.

The eras change gameplay and flavor quite a bit, to the point where I would like people to vote for one or the other. Do you want a progression from the rise of chivalry in 1100 to the "end" of chivalry in 1500... or do you want a progression from the height of chivalry to its "end" in warfare. The choice is yours.

As for factions, well, that kinda depends on which era we pick. Honestly, I'm fine with any of the non-horse archer factions. Horse archers are infamous in Total War games for a reason, and the AI of Medieval 2 has enough of a struggle keeping up with the player without them.

Houses, I will mention, don't need to be serious and... I'll even put this part in bold because it is very important: do not need to have extensive backstories. We'll write them as we go along. I'm not opposed to origin stories, but the point of this LP is to make the history of the houses through our victories and failures in conquest and reconquest. What I don't mind is houses having house words or general characteristics associated with them, feel free to make those.

Here's a format so you can submit your choices easier

The houses we'll make after we pick an era and faction.

Other Games / Prelude to Darkness: Early 0's Era Freeware Dark Fantasy RPG
« on: February 08, 2017, 05:09:41 pm »
While scrolling about in a thread on the Iron Tower Studio forum I saw this game mentioned and decided to download it and give it a shot. Haven't played too terribly much of it, but it seems pretty interesting and since there isn't really any active forum to talk about it I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread here.

Story is that there are two major bloodlines River and Flame which have lived in relative peace for 1000 years until recently when a large famine and plague hit. Both of which ended up sparking an ethnic conflict between the Flame and River and a bunch of other really bad things. This causes The Watcher (some sort of governor guy) to summon your band of heroes to quell the rebellion and hopefully stabilize the region. There's a lot more lore to it than just that on the zerosum website if you're curious about the details.
Spoiler: Screenshots (click to show/hide)

Original website. Downloads don't work, use the one below.

Download link. This isn't the latest version of the game, (that's 1.8 ) but it is apparently a lot more stable than latest so it's the one I'm uploading. If you want 1.8 you can get it off a thread in the RPG Codex forum linked to on the zero-sum website. I'm not going to link it here since some of the sigs of users have racist and homophobic slurs in them, and I'd rather not go anywhere near that if I don't have to.

A man who looks like his about to thrust his groin in the direction of the viewer, and a woman in dubious garb, I feel Heroic already.

Intro Cinematic!

Spoiler: Intro Nonsense (click to show/hide)

The game is Darklands, developed by MPS Labs, published by Microprose, and released in 1992. It is also a "Heroic Role-Playing Adventure in Medieval Germany." Yes, it's a fantasy game set in Medieval Germany with all that entails: witchcraft, alchemy, miracles, great beasts, and demonic entities.

The main way you interact with the game is through a choose your own adventure style interface with still background images. Whether it be city, village, mine, or crypt, it is the interface you use to interact with it.

Combat is real-time with pause, very similar to the (significantly more popular) Baldur's Gate except more, well, rustic. Almost all combat is the result of a text-based scene with some rare exceptions, as such the isometric view is used only in combat and you don't explore with it outside of the (rather annoying) dungeons the game has to offer.

Game can be acquired legally here and here. The Steam version has poor quality sound by default and the GOG version has general sound problems. Steam's problem can be fixed by changing the default config settings around and GOG's by renaming some files so it probably doesn't matter which one you choose to use.

With that, let's begin character creation. It is something unique to say the least.
Spoiler: Character Creation (click to show/hide)

Characters should be submitted in this format:

Gender:
Name "Nickname" Name: (Needs to be vaguely medieval, but doesn't need to be much more than that.)
General Build: (try to provide weapon type here also)
Childhood:
Occupation(s): (Each occupation equals 5 years. Aging penalties start at 30 with a small penalty to strength, endurance, and agility, gradually getting worse as you get older. At 45 you get penalties to perception and charisma, and at 55 you get a penalty to intelligence.)
Heraldry: (these and the character sprites can be found at the end of the character creation video)
Character Sprites:
Colors:

Backstory: (If you don't want to bother filling out the childhood and occupations then just a backstory and name should be fine.)

If you have a good victory condition for the party, (that isn't slogging through the main-story dungeons) then provide it roughly around here. Same applies for possible party names.

Current Character Submissions:

Pseudo-Knights:

Frans "Francoise" van der Vos (Harry Baldman)
Hanse "Hanse" Lowborn (moghopper)

Battle-Priests:

El Vocalo de Deos "The Frank" (BFEL) Eaten by a Cathar.

Alchemist Warlords:

Jack of Euchre (EuchreJack)

Current Party:

Francoise
Hanse
Jack of Euchre

I won't roll numbers for every category when rolling for new characters, just in the categories that could conceivably be useful for the current party. This is to prevent asinine setups like 4 alchemists just because the numbers say so. We'll see how it works, this LP is probably going to go on for a while.

While I've tried to explain as much as I can, there's still some minor stuff I didn't explain so if you need information quickly you can read the manual here

Edit: added in Euchrejack's better formatted background list from his (long dead) LP and also added in a bit describing the usefulness of the various stats and skills.

Edit-2: fixed intro audio because apparently the default settings were bad. Might explain why the music was making my ears bleed before. That, and I never knew I was WELCOMED TO DARKLANDS!

Edit-3: added link to manual.

So, some craziness is going on with Steam updates right now, it seems like it is deleting _CommonRedist_ folders and redownloading them: for every friggin' game that uses them. Thankfully that seems to be only thing that is happening, as I've not seen any real reports of malware or anything like that, but I thought it would probably a good idea to make a thread to keep people updated. You can still access your games from the folder by the way, no clue if some games are broken by this or not however on my end they seem to work. Regardless, don't log into Steam just in case this turns out to be something much worse.

Edit General compilation of information so far: Your games are fine. Steam is just acting weird and if you put the updates on pause there shouldn't be problems.

Also, it appears some people are having trouble downloading things, and the wishlist feature is down for some. Saw repeated reports of this on the Steam forums, might be fixed, might not.

Yes, I'm going to be messing around with the object testing area. Theoretically people will be able to post suggestions and I might do them, maybe. But let's actually start, yeah?

(Yes, I know it's small but I'd rather it not be massive and blurry.)
This is a link to the soundtrack. Specifically this is the main menu theme.
Age of Decadence being a post-apocalyptic Roman inspired turn-based RPG made by Iron Tower Studio. http://www.irontowerstudio.com/
Game can also be bought in these places.

I think this bit from when the game was released a couple months ago does a pretty good job of getting the ideas of the game across "The Age of Decadence is not a game about killing monsters or exploring mystical lands, but rather, surviving amid the greed and brutality of your fellow humans and carving out a name for yourself. Good and bad are purely relative. It’s a world of scheming and backstabbing in which your words and actions have the potential to forge alliances and sow discord, and your path is never certain."
