DF General Discussion / Restarting... again
« on: December 15, 2017, 01:29:45 pm »
Just seeking general advice.  I've taken a long break - like 9-10 months - and I want to try the new build.  I'm somewhat paralyzed though.  I've gone to the world creation screen several times and I sit and look at it for several minutes, then wander off to do something else.  My inner voice keeps saying, 'just make a world, save it, embark, save it again, then just play - you'll get ideas'.  But it hasn't worked so far.  I guess it's very similar to writer's block.

Anyone else had this?  What did you do to get past it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Overlapping leisure zones
« on: April 08, 2017, 12:05:55 pm »
I seem to remember there being some issue with overlapping taverns, libraries, and temples.  But I don't remember what the issue was or where to find the discussion.  Does anyone remember?

I want to burrow 8 dwarves with their bedrooms and their workshops plus one room that overlaps a barracks, tavern and temple.  I suppose I could just try it and see, but I'm in no hurry so I'd rather plan it first.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Starting a library from scratch
« on: January 08, 2017, 01:13:07 pm »
I'm playing in a new world (year 11, started in year 5).  I've had a library and a single scholar running for three years now.  Visitors are allowed but none have come.  The scholar is an accomplished surgeon, and though he spends all of his time Pondering Bandages! he has only written two very bad scrolls on Fortresses - one generically about the fortress and the other about him coming to the fortress.  There are both human and dwarf caravans but neither brings reading material of any kind.  Now the rest of my dwarves are getting anxious, sometimes downright unruly, for reading material and abstract thought.

So, what's the best way to get a library going from nothing?  Are there any professions other than doctors and mechanics that I can train up?  I have a mechanic that's nearly legendary and I'm going to make him a scholar just as soon as he is.

I also don't entirely understand mentor/mentees.  Should I assign a peasant as a scholar to try and form a bond with the surgeon and maybe spark discussions?

And don't forget to check your Dead/Missing page to see if any of your pets or anyone you know died of old age!

DF General Discussion / The First Anvil
« on: October 23, 2016, 09:52:03 am »
Sorry if this is old news and has been discussed before, but someone mentioned "first anvil" in another discussion and it got me to thinking about this.  In the World of Warcraft WoD Frostfire zone there is a "The First Anvil" and maybe a quest that goes with it.  I've always wondered if this was a nod to DF.  Anyone know?

DF Gameplay Questions / Burrows and Tavern/Library/Temple
« on: October 14, 2016, 01:04:45 pm »
I know this has been asked because I've seen the question, but I can't remember the answer and I've spent the last 15 minutes trying various searches on google and the wiki with no luck.  So I feel it's fair to ask again.

Will burrowed dwarves leave the burrow to take care of needs in tavern/library/temple, or do you need to include a location in the burrow?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Tree Growth
« on: October 10, 2016, 10:11:11 am »
I'm curious about long-term tree growth.  If tree A is eclipsing tree B such that tree B is crescent shaped over multiple z-levels, and tree A is then chopped down, will tree B "fill-out" into the empty space over time, or will it always be a sad crescent shaped tree?

Year three of my newest fort.  The civ only has one site, and my outpost liaison was a goblin.  In mid-winter while the liaison was just hanging out around the fortress, one of my citizens takes a swing at him.  Four others jump in, one of which is a miner, and pick-hole-in-the-head dead goblin liaison.

And he was supposed to come back with more leather...  ah well.

Correction:  Pick-severed-head dead goblin liaison

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Scroll scribe copies
« on: May 20, 2016, 04:16:25 pm »
My single scribe has been on the job for nearly a year.  When assigned, he immediately set about copying all the scrolls bought from caravans.  There are no assigned scholars as all immigrants have been void dwarves with no scholarly skills, but visitors have come and produced original works.  It appears that the scribe has never copied an original scroll, even though there are plenty of blank scrolls available.

I've noticed something like this in previous forts, where I thought it was that scribes didn't copy scrolls at all.  But again, this scribe copied all the purchased scrolls, then just seems to have stopped working.  Anyone know why?

First, there must be a noble assigned in 'n'obles to use the workshop profile.

Q:  How is this different from just assigning seven beds in the workshop?
A:  The first and probably most important difference is that you can load up a workshop with far more than ten items to create.  Another difference is that work orders themselves don't cancel until complete, which can be good or bad depending on your tolerance level for cancelation spam.  And another difference is that you will get a message on completion, which may help in reminding to build the seven beds.

Q:  Why doesn't the "at least 10 wooden pots" condition keep 10 wooden pots on hand?
A:  See the following example.  Conditions are triggers to initiate the work order.  They do not influence the subject of the work order, only whether the work order is started or not.  Consider the statement, "If there are at least ten empty large pots, then make five large pots."  This will produce no large pots when they are needed, and more when they are already in oversupply.

Q:  Is there a way to make up to a certain number of something?
A:  It does not appear so.  The "perpetual" is very similar to the standard workshop "repeat", except that cancellation of the job for whatever reason (e.g. short supply of materials) won't cancel the work order itself.  This leads to steady cancelation spam.

Q:  Is it possible to change the number created by the work order after the work order is set up?  I.e., can I change my amounts as my fortress grows?
A:  No.  You may change conditions freely, but the initial number is fixed.  You will need to make additional work orders or delete the old one and set up a new one.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Those darn tree-climbing Yaks
« on: May 05, 2016, 08:33:53 pm »
Merchant Yak up a tree - no other merchants on the map.  It's only two z-levels up so I'm probably just going to take my chances and cut down the tree.  Live or die doesn't seem like it will matter, since no one is around to lead it off the map.  Is this going to reflect poorly on my civ for trading?

DF Gameplay Questions / Marriage rules?
« on: May 01, 2016, 08:51:19 am »
New fortress; first immigrant wave; 2 married dwarves - one aged 64 and the other 82.  First time I've seen this in some three years of playing, and my understanding is this shouldn't be possible.  So,

- This is the first summer immigrant wave, does that allow breaking the rules?
- I'm supposing these are void dwarves as they have no relations other than who they showed up with (one had two children but no spouse).  Can void dwarves break the marriage rules?
- I know vampires can lie about their age, but I didn't think they showed up in the first year, or ever with their "spouse".  Could one of them be a vampire?

DF Gameplay Questions / Movement: Exiting a water tile
« on: April 21, 2016, 02:49:12 pm »
Is it possible to move from water to floor without a ramp in between?

An FB roamed around my first cavern layer for over a year without entering my trapped hallway.  I assumed it couldn't resist smashing the helpless door I left for it.  But after it suffered a fatal giant cave toad bite to the abdomen, I started wondering if maybe it couldn't get to it.  It seemed to have no trouble moving wherever it pleased around the cavern - water or no.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Crosses?
« on: April 18, 2016, 05:51:52 pm »
I have a dwarf with a preference for "crosses".  It's listed between "the color sky blue" and "hatch covers".  No "cross" or "crosses" on the wiki, and nothing on google (for Dwarf Fortress of course).  I only noticed because I was considering this one for Baroness, but I suppose that's a really bad idea.  Is this an adventure mode item?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Underground lake wood harvesting
« on: April 16, 2016, 08:27:00 am »
Most of my first cavern layer is a lake with the usual tower-caps and fungiwood growing from it.  I've never really paid much attention to trees in lakes.

- Can you designate tree cutting from above the waterline?
- Will new trees grow from the lake?
- Even if you paved over the surface around the tree, how much wood will still fall into the water?
