DF Adventure Mode Discussion / So about the pet interaction...

I can't seem to figure out how to do the most important thing, which is pet my pets, how do I do it? I can't find the option, is it buried somewhere?

So I constructed a DAS in a small alcove (With a statue of a Deity of Murder out of the reach of the smashing) to dispose of a vampire that had snuck into my fort,  but I just realized I can't engrave their name on a slab as no one saw them crushed and are therefore marked missing.   Have I accidentally created a murderous ghost vampire to wreak havoc on my fortress? Will they eventually be declared dead or do they stay missing forever?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Where do you count from for Deep metals?

Basically curious I have a deep metals only fortress in a world but I'm not sure where I should start my exploratory mining.   I mean I know the wiki says -17 to -61,  but do I count from the Highest point that has walkable tiles, or do I count from the lowest suface point with walk-able tiles?
I also kinda went somewhere that was a bit mountainous as you do so I have a low point that would be still be the surface and walk-able and a high point that would the surface and walk-able.

So I just was able to grab a lord from a City where an army was marching.   It said I can have them come with me to rescue them and I'm curious how do you successfully do this?


Right now I'm planning to drag their Lord-ass to one of my Adventurer Camps out of Range of the Army, is that how it works or can you only move them to  other cities?

So I was wondering, is there a table or anything that can tell you what needs you can actually complete to lose the Distracted status?  I'm aware Make Romance is impossible to fix at the moment, what are some other ones?


For example since you can get companions is there a way to stoke a friendship with them to satisfy the "be with friends" need if you have it?   


What would be nice as stated above, is there's a table or something that lists  possible vs impossible?

So like do we know if Vomit ever gets cleaned up in Interiors?  Cause right now my Tavern's floor is pretty much covered in Vomit and it's nasty.  I have set some dorfs to cleaning only duty but they don't seem interested in cleaning up all the vomit.


Otherwise I might have to make a suggestion for assignable cleaning or some such.

I'm no good at large topics like this but I just wanted to share one of the procedural Generated Instruments in my Current Fortress/world  It's called the Solon and I'm pretty sure it's basically an acoustic/analog Keytar made of stone.

DF Gameplay Questions / Secrets of Generating a World to 1050?

So for the last few versions (I think since before 40d... maybe starting after 40d) I can't seem to get worlds to generate to 1050.  Anyone successfully gen to 1050 in .42?  Depending on worlds Dwarf Fortress Crashes/stops responding between 111 and 300.


Do you just need a beefy Processor now or patience?

Or more specifically would I double the  "Area" or would I double the Height/Width (For example would two yak's need 32x32 or would they only need 512)

Since Yak's on the wiki have a recommended Pasture size of 16x16, and the Pasture Area is 256.

And yes I understand they are likely better handled by slaughter but I was gouing to wait to slaughter them till I was a bit more settled with the fortress.


I should point out math is not my strong suit.
I think I doubled the area wrong.

So Mid Autumn has fallen on my longest crash free Fortress in .40.01, and my black sand desert just popped up with 'plants' called "Pebble Plants"  and "baby toes succulent."


I'm a little scared.

I'm having trouble logging into Dwarf Fortress Map Archive.   Is there a "resend my password" or "Forgot Password" option on that site anywhere?

Simple suggestion, in the jobs menu there should be an option where you can zoom to the goal of a "get/collect this item" job.  For example the infamous Cannot collect Web spam once you breach the caverns.
I noticed when you view the job you can see what Urist's trying to collect, (I am assuming that message comes up once Urist has chosen the target  before doing any mental path finding), However you cannot zoom to the location of the item in question that's giving them no end of trouble.


As stated at the beginning it would be nice to be able to zoom to that job's goal as well as the workshop or the dwarf trying to do the job.

DF Modding / Language raws and special characters (keeping them in)

Edit: *Turns out you can get notepad 2 for windows to help with this issue (I used the zip to avoid losing my default notepad)*  you can also use Edit from the command prompt but C&P is kinda hard to do for words with special characters.

I know currently there is a program to make your own languages for Dwarf fortress using the existing raws, but my main question is:
Are there any programs that can read the raws for languages that keep in the special characters/Accented.   Apparently the raws use code page 437 ( read that in an old topic about the similar situation) though programs that supposedly can handle that still give you Mojibake characters for the letters like еутвя.

or failing that, anyone got a chart that can translate what each mojibake character represents?

Again I'm looking to read them outside DF.


I should mention I usually use tilesets that don't change the letters that much as I rarely use graphics.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What to do with Animal/Insect Men

My cage traps have recently garnered me two Grasshopper Women,  I wanna get rid of them but the game doesn't let you manually remove them from the cages anymore.    And since they can't be trained as sla... er Indentured Servants without the help of Utilities.  What else can I do with these creepy insect women?

So I settled near a brook that instantly became stagnant as they are wont to do lately and I'm currently trying to set myself up with a pump purification facility and aqueduct.   How difficult is it to pull this off and avoid further stagnation of water sources?  And how likely is an underground cistern to become another festering Mosquito pit (What? that's where they usually live isn't it?)  It'll be one tile wide with floors and walls constructed of stone and wood.   It's also got a bit to travel  any tips on setting up a decent pump flow to keep it clean?




I'll upload a pick of my idea if it'll help visualize what I'm doing at the moment, just in the digging stages at the moment.
