The Tower of Makhios

”The Tower is older than memory itself - that is what we have been told. ‘The Tower came first,’ the clergy of that place say, ‘and the city after.’ I do not care old and venerable the place is, however; the shadow it casts over the soul is greater than even that cast by its awesome height. The place reeks of greed, and of sorrow, and of death. Do not be dazzled by those that return... be afear'd by those that do not, for they are doubtless far more numerous.”

-Brüder Johannes Antoninus, Abbot of Grelitz, 988

In the Year 1022, the Tower of Makhios, an enigmatic monument of a past age, stands yet enduring at the mouth of the Gulf of Selenopolis, dwarfing even the tallest man-made structures of the city. It is a holy site, administered by priests of Makhios, God of Battle. Some say that the Tower is the haft of the bloodthirsty deity's spear, plunged into the land, while others say it is the first of his temples, built in the spot where he was born out of his slain father's blood.

While the Tower's origin is shrouded in mystery, its contents draw great champions and unproven warriors from all corners of the world, and tales of the riches within have spread to even the most remote hamlets. The Tower functions on a simple principle; those who enter are free to loot as they please, and those who manage to leave sometimes do so with a fabulous amount of wealth in tow. Swords and armor of the finest make, crowns and scepters beset with sparkling gemstones, and the hides of exotic beasts have all been brought triumphantly from the Tower, yet not all gifts within are material: unnatural vitality, striking beauty, and even the ability to work magic have been bestowed upon the most fortunate.

These treasures come at a cost, even to those who survive unscathed: much of one's memory of their time within the Tower is quickly taken from them should they leave its threshold. The priests say that this is a blessing of Makhios; a warrior who forgets their foes so too forgets their fears, and fear is the bane of the warrior. Sparse fragments of these memories may return, briefly beheld in dreams - or nightmares - but they are all that survive the Tower's overwhelming magic.

Roll To Dodge / Silverblades (5/5, waitlist open)
« on: July 16, 2018, 10:58:13 pm »
In a time before time, when creatures that existed beyond the scope of the human imagination skulked these lands, our world was far different from what it is now. Primordial beings that once existed beyond the plane of reality entered our world, forming terrifying corporeal forms. They were not evil, nor were they malicious, but they did not belong. In a great war, the four ancient gods, their names lost in the sands of time, clashed with these beings and were defeated miserably. The gods and their shattered legions retreated, and sought assistance.

The First Hunter, who stalked the world for worthy prey, answered their call, and staved off the Beasts single-handedly, sealing them away with the resonating power that lies deep within this land. The gods, rather than rewarding him, feared his power and sealed him away in the frigid wastes of the North. Eons passed, the old gods were replaced with new ones, and the power of the land decayed, as is the nature of all things. The seal of the Beasts began to crumble, and the First Hunter pledged himself to the new gods, forsaking his pride, so that he could restore the power of the seal holding the Beasts. There is far more to that story, but that is not story I seek to tell.

Perhaps he First Hunter's power faded away as time bore on, or perhaps he died in his final mission. Whatever the case, he was heard from no more, and his name was forgotten. His story, however, was not. He had trained disciples, apprentices, and told his story to those who would spread his message and hunt down the descendants of the Beasts.

One day, a malignant and power hungry thaumaturge traveled to the very core of the world, and tore a rift between our world and the abyssal prison of the Beasts, thinking he could control them. This proved to be his final folly. The Beasts were free, and only after the world was nearly torn apart was the rift sealed and most of the remaining Beasts sealed away or slain. However, they had left their mark on the world, for their spawn still roamed free and those who they granted a fragment of their power still worshiped them, seeking to release them once again.

But those few who remembered the tale of the First Hunter would not let that happen. We are Silverblades, those who keep the tale of the First Hunter alive, and those who fight so that his efforts were not in vain.

This is my last RTD. I'll make sure that it's a great one, too.

Mod Releases / Dark Souls mod for DF 0.44.x
« on: March 19, 2018, 09:35:53 pm »
http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=13593 <--- download link

Do you like the Dark Souls series? Do you like dying a lot to the same boss, and slowly losing your humanity? Do you like getting invaded and immediately decapitated?

Perhaps more importantly, would you like all of that in Dwarf Fortress?

This mod adds a number of creatures, weapons, and civilizations from the Dark Souls I, Dark Souls III, and Demon's Souls universes. Currently, this mod contains the following

5 new civs, including the stoic and silent Silver Knights, the powerful and somewhat outgoing Undead Legion, the insane and roving Hollows, the intimidating and barbaric Ghrus, and the powerful Darkwraiths.
12 new creatures, such as the firey crabs from Smouldering Lake and the Undead Dogs that appear in all installments to the series.
24 new weapons, such as the Black Knight Sword and the Dragonslayer Spear.
3 new ranged weapons: the arbalest, a heavy but powerful crossbow, and two greatbows that fire unique ammunition.
5 new unique helms, including the iconic Pinwheel Masks and the Xanthous Crown.
4 new armor sets, such as the tattered garments of the Ghrus, and the bony armor of the Darkwraiths.
1 new semimegabeast, the Armor Spider from Demon's Souls, which can both breathe bursts of fire and spray web in a deadly immolating combo!

Prepare to die and to go beyond death in your own Dwarf Fortress!

Spoiler: Coming soon (click to show/hide)

If you find any bugs, please let me know - I just released this mod, and there's a lot of testing to be done.

124 rooms.
8 fighters.
1 prison.

In the world's most popular and least censured government-sanctioned sporting event, 8 enemies of the state are thrown into a complex prison-like facility. The "sport" is the ensuing death battle that occurs. The 8 fighters are dispersed in the facility, which has multiple deadly features stowed away within 124 rooms. As time progresses, rooms will gradually be sealed off and filled with poison gas, forcing the contestants towards the center of the facility. The last surviving competitor will be set free after therapy, lobotomy, and 1984-esque re-education. It isn't cruel. After all, it's for the enjoyment of the people and the safety of the government!

Hey! I'm making a pretty massive mod at the moment, and I'm a bit of a novice modder. Novice as in this will be my first released mod and the second one I make (the first one turned out to be a flop). So basically, I'm asking for you to pity me enough to help me with any of the following things.

Making new races
Making new deadly predators
Making new formidable megas and semi-megas
Making new benign grazers
Making new poisons that cause all sorts of wacky, deadly, and fun effects
Adding more flavor in adventure mode
Making new deadly weapons and protective armors
Making creatures that won't be hostile to the denizens of HFS
Making new grasses
Making new trees
Making new brewable plants
Making balanced new metals
Making non-megabeast creatures that take up lairs during world-gen
Pretty much making something cool

So I'm practically asking you people to make my mod for me Any and all help will be appreciated, and I will prominently credit you for your assistance.

Also pls include it in your modpacks

DF Community Games & Stories / The Tale of Icerocks, my first "fort"
« on: March 19, 2017, 10:47:20 pm »
I'd been lurking the DF wiki for a few days when I finally decided that Dwarf Fortress looked really cool and I wanted to download it. I read the guide, researched the creatures  and learned about the controls. I thought that I was finally ready to start a fortress and get to killing forgotten beasts.

I was, as you can imagine, wrong.

When I generated my world and scoped out a place to build my first fortress, I neglected to really read anything and just went with what looked cool. I finally embarked in a cold biome with little soil and no flux stone.

I had no idea what I was looking at.

I mean, I knew that the little smilies were my dwarves, and the white punctuation marks scattered everywhere was the ground. I fooled around a bit in the menu, creating burrows, disabling labors, and designating stockpiles until I finally figured out how to order my dwarves to do stuff. Not wanting to waste any more time, I designated for a space to be carved into the rock and a few trees to be felled.

Skip forward to mod-autumn. My food stores are running out, and I have no idea how to farm, by the time I figure it out, my dwarves have eaten all my plump helmet spawn. I resort to gathering plants, and create a meager above ground farm.

Of course, that isn't my main problem.

I had run out of booze a while ago, but I didn't notice, mainly because my dwarves drank from a nearby pond. However, with winter on the horizon, I watched in horror as drink cancellation messages popped up stating that my dwarves couldn't find water. The pond had frozen, and my dwarves were doomed.

To this day, even as a moderately experienced DF player who has slain both forgotten beast and GCS, I stay away from cold places.

DF can be cruel to new players.

Interested in what this may be?

If so, stay awhile, because you're about to witness the wonders of...

FORUM RUNNER: THE SECONDING

As was its predecessor, Forum Runner the Seconding, or Forum Runner 2, will be a forum game spanning the very metaverse of the Bay12 forums. 2 contestants will compete, completing mini-challenges in forum games hosted by other forumgoers. These can range from creating a terrible and furious monster in a Roleplay-esque fashion to surviving in a harsh unforgiving desert in an RTD.

You can participate, nominate a friend to play, or host one of the mini-challenges - or just sit back and watch the chaos.

This RTD has no storyline. You just murder each other. No storyline, AND YES THERE IS A MAP DRAIGNEAN - just slaughter. Most importantly, YOU get to choose and create the race, weapon(s), and armor of your character. All I do is approve it, or say no if it looks to be too powerful. And no storyline.

Definitely no storyline. Hehehe.

DF Modding / A Crap Ton of Questions About Modding from a Noob (Answered~!)
« on: February 04, 2017, 05:16:31 pm »
Err... let's get started!

1. What are spheres?

2. How do I make a certain creature take over goblin civs, like HFS?

3. How do I specify how many of a creature is created during worldgen?

4. How do I make a creature attack forts that have a certain amount of wealth, leading an army of lesser creatures, also like HFS?

5. How do I make a creature gen semi-randomly, like FBs and titans?

6. How do I make a creature reproduce on its own?

7. How do I make a creature be made out of a certain material?

8. How do I determine the speed of a creature?

9. How would I make a creature able to reanimate corpses like a necromancer without a slab?

10. How would I change the butchering yields of a creature?

11. When making a sentient race capable of sieging, how would I change what mounts and war animals they use, the numbers they attack in, and their general strategy, if possible?

12. Can a creature survive if it's made only out of one type of body part (for instance, a creature made out of 50 eyeballs)?

13. Is it possible to make a creature cause tantrums and insanity?

14. Is it possible to make a creature immune to dragonfire, regular fire, and even magma?

15. Is it possible to make a creature to give birth to another creature of a different species?

16. How do I make two creatures of a different species not hostile to each other, if possible? (like HFS)

Also, any tips you expert modders may have about making a creature very powerful and likely to survive long would be appreciated. I'm going for something around the lines of "eldritch horror".

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Noob Question
« on: February 03, 2017, 02:19:38 pm »
Err, hello there! I've seen quite a few succession forts posting their world for others to download, and I've been wondering...

How would I go about importing a downloaded DF world?

I'd really like to play on a map with an abundance with metals, yet all six forts I've launched so far have had only native silver, sphalerite, and the ever-so rare galena.

Roll To Dodge / Operation Titan (Open, 7/10)
« on: January 30, 2017, 03:59:54 pm »
Look at all dem weapons

You wanna play

Don't resist

Please note that this game is very close to completion, but still partially more features will be added. Don't worry, though, these new features will be accessible to everyone once they emerge. The game is completely playable as it is.

You look around you. They're everywhere.

The infected.

Your four squadmates in Theta-006 Team are also looking at the milling horde of infected around you. Your job is to kill them. You start firing, as do your squadmates. In a matter of seconds, all that remains of the horde is a pile of bullet-filled gore. That's when the doors break.

Something huge, deadly beyond words, charges at you.

You don't stand a chance.

You're one of the soldiers sent to an abandoned biodome on Titan, Saturn's largest moon, to recover a weakened sample of a deadly methane-based lifeform that nearly wiped out humanity, which can be used to create a vaccine. The virus turns victims into zombies - mindless humans, immune to pain and fear, with an urge to spread the virus that uses them as a host. Your employer, the biotech conglomerate RAPID, has warned you that you aren't the only ones looking for the sample, however.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Help with Caged Enemies
« on: January 16, 2017, 05:20:39 pm »
Hey, everyone! As a newbie DF player, I have no idea how to make a proper arena to make my caged troglodytes and crundles fight (or even how to get them out of their cages without losing some dorfs). How do I create an arena that allows my dorfs to dump in gladiators without having to actually enter?
