DF Adventure Mode Discussion / CHALLENGE: Slaying the bronze colossus
« on: December 27, 2009, 10:47:12 am »
Prologue:

'The silence filled the air with a foreboding sense of menace. It seemed to wrap itself around the assembled hosts of Ithithˇ Singehail, filling them all with a sense of dread. The armies of the Whiskers of Copper had marched for days to reach the hills that led upwards towards the beasts lair, through rain and snow, pushing onwards driven by pure hatred. The creature, a bronze colossus named Rasm Firststeels in the language of the dwarves, was a thorn in the side of the newly crowned Ithithi. Since the dawn of time it had plagued the whiskers of copper, burning their home trees, stealing the fruits of the forest and slaying the precious animal friends within.

No-one knew how it had come to being. Tales of sorcery and a mad magician, legends from the age of myth when the earth and sky where made anew were all the that remained, burying all hope of discovering its past.

Not that it mattered to Ithithi. Newly crowned, bearly 21 and of a new family line, he led a decimated nation that had fell prey to his foul kin of the Evils of Depression. The colossus had recently attacked the home trees and killed the majority of the high council, their bodies broken under its vast strength. Ithithi remembered the scene, and how he had cowered while the emotionless juggernaut had laid waste to not only his kin, but the semi sentient, ancient hometrees that had brought his race to prominence some 400 years earlier.

Ithithi spat at the ground and turned to quickly survey his force of 500 elven soldiers. He steeled himself against the memories that threatened to overwhelm his nerves, and sword an oath to ilathe, the glacial winds.

Whether it cost him his life, Rasm Firesteels would die today and the whiskers of copper restored to glory.

Drawing his sword, he let out a battlecry that echoed along the lines, slicing the silence like a knife. A dull thudding sound of metal scraping rock answered them as the colossus came into view, the sun glinting off its war torn surface. Without responding, the colossus hauled itself from the cave, casting its shadow onto the assembled force below.

Ithithi let out another roar of rage, and the elves charged to meet their adversary knowing that today, it was truly either death, or glory.'

Challenge:

It seems i have created an almost undefeatable enemy, so i lay down the challenge to other adventuring enthusiasts. No bronze colossus of the Age of Heroes mod has ever fallen to any of mine, or my friends adventurers. Legendary heroes, from a single adventurer to an entire party of highly skilled heroes, no one has been able to sucessfully kill, or even badly maim the towering beasts.

So i put it to you to try! With the new version coming up, can you slay the bronze colossus' of the mythical plane?

Howto partake in the challenge:

Simply replace the bronze colossus entry in your creature standard .txt with the following lines of script

While you wont HAVE to generate a new world it is prefered, as the colossus's in your world with otherwise not have gained skills making them slightly easier to defeat.

Alternatively, download the age of heroes mod i made at http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=1711. It doesnt matter as long as you have the buffed colossus to take on!

The winner is not only the person who first manages the feat, but also posts a engrossing story of battle along with evidence of the final victory, using either the gamelog or screens.

May armok guide your sword arms, adventurers!

So, im currently at university studying to become a programmer. During the downtime, when i dont have work or projects to complete, ive found myself playing lots of roleplaying games such as traveller, dungeons and dragons, dark millenium etc with other people.

It then grasped me that of the fantasy equivalents, none of them i found were satisfying - they lacked the cool factors that i wanted. DnD was far too high fantasy, and for some reason GURPS has never, ever appealed to me.

It is then i remembered dwarf fortress. The works of threetoe and the amazing breadth of the things that can happen in adventure and fortress mode made me realise that DF would be ideal for
such a system. Since im also designed a sci fi rpg to code that is inspired by dwarf fortress's design ethic, i also see use in any devised system that could also inspire me to produce a better game system for that particular project.

Anyhows, to cut the waffle, the idea for Adventurer was born.

However, im looking for input on such a project, in key areas. Some of them are listed below.

How much should be written in rules?
What dice system would be most appropriate?
How will character creation occur? Will the stats and skills be the same as DF?
How will the combat system work? It will obviously need to be abstracted in some way.
How will monsters be handled?
Will the game be purely through dice rolls and imagination/other supplements or also be partly miniatures like DND, or should both be catered for?
Will there be deadly carp?
How should magic be implemented?

The list goes on...

Currently im hoping to keep the DF feel as much as possible, as a faithful creation would be cool. I want to take inspiration from threetoes stories and the powergoals where the main game fails to inspire.

At the moment im thinking of a d100 system as its one i favour after playing inquisitor, and will allow for the bonuses of dwarf fortress's default stats to be taken into effect.

What do you guys think?

Im very open to help and ideas!

Thanks!

DF Modding / Age of Heroes FINAL : Merry Christmas all!
« on: December 24, 2009, 02:40:33 pm »
DF: Age of Heroes Modification: Final

'A world in conflict. A time where great nations rise against each other in war and where terrible and fell beasts roam free; a time of great villainy, where demonic power, goblins and cannibalistic elves hold sway over the land, and where nations turn upon their very own kinsmen. A world of blood, presided over by the god of blood, Armok, who revels in the mindless slaughter which sweeps across the mortal world, drinking deep the offerings of sundered flesh.

However, it is also a time of great courage, bravery and hope, an age of heroes, antiheroes and legends. In a world of destiny, the greatest arise from the most unlikely of places, fighting against the ever growing strength of the forces of entropy.

Whether by the flexibility and adaptability of humanity, the craftsmanship and martial prowess of the dwarves, the strange practices of the elves or the remorselessness of the goblin tribes, the world will be changed forever.

Your future awaits you.'

So guys, here it is the final version! This is a christmas present from me to you.
Originally this was never going to be released, but it is such an improvement on the
original AOH mod i wanted to share the end result with all of you.

The Age of Heroes modification aims to add more content to the dwarf fortress game without breaking or destroying the feel of the default Dwarf Fortress world by introducing things like new entities (Orcs, for example). It can be thought of as dwarf fortress plus.

New creatures, new items, and a host of fixes are all included for you pleasure.

Changes, a very brief list:

+ All races fully playable in adventure and fortress mode. Even kobolds!
Now you can make that thematic fortress using the full capabilities of the 40d version.

+ All current creatures improved upon. Many have new attacks, bugs such as the hydra heads have been fixed, and many
creatures are buffed or debuffed from the original dwarf fortress. Megabeasts and semimegabeasts are much more powerful
than the default version. Many new deadly creatures also reside across the world, from vicious giant hunting spiders
to gorgons and vicious rocs even treants!
All designed to fit in with the original visions of DF's creators.

The majority of creatures are now tameable by the dungeon master, and the majority can also be bred! GCS FUN times ahead.

+ New Armour, weapons and items. Lots of weapon changes, to make your weapon choice more important. Many have capabilities that
are offset by other disadvantages. Many new tools have also been added for some races so that they make more logical sense in
fortress mode. If you want to be a closed helm, plate wearing maniac firing steal shurikens while hacking some thing to death with
  a great axe, you can.

The elves require a special mention. No longer is there woodcraft the same as other races. Now all elven wooden weapons are as deadly as the iron equivalent!

+ New plants, and balances to old plants abound.

+ With the expanded version, all the benefits of the Minerals Mod will be open to you.

For the specific things that the old version changed, see the the old thread linked in the updated
download page, there are too many to list!

Hopefully ive suceeded in keeping the feel in line with the original game. I tried to add more generic additions that wouldnt destroy the immersion, for example, small shields, normal shields and tower shields to cover all the sizes of sheild rather than descend into adding 9 different shield types. Ive only added specifics if theyve added some new mechanic to the fighting, and is such why rapier is not covered under longsword.

The current thread contains some raws of the new version for the curious!

Have a happy christmas all, and enjoy!

Thanks goes to: Deon, for the help on chaos reigns and allowing me to pilfer the body concept which has
stopped many a mortal wound woe.
Sean, for the brilliant mineral mods.
Creator of the deadly lands mod, who i cannot remember the name of!

Apologies but a full readme would take me away from something else im doing... :P

PLANT FIX. Redownload the mod to get the plant fix. I packed it wrong. Sorry.

DF Modding / Dwarf Fortress: Age of Heroes Mod : Release 1
« on: April 26, 2009, 01:35:26 pm »
DF: Age of Heroes Modification

The Age of Heroes modification aims to add more content to the dwarf fortress game without breaking or destroying the feel of the default Dwarf Fortress world by introducing things like new entities (Orcs, for example). It can be thought of as dwarf fortress plus.

New creatures, new items, and a host of fixes are all included for you pleasure.

The mod comes in two formats. Original and expanded. The features of original are outlined below.

The full change list is below

Entities

- All entities are now playable. No modification has been done to jobs however, so some may be restrictive when compared to the dwarves.

Creatures (Old)

- All creatures given new attacks. Some creatures receive new poison, blood sucking, or special attacks, or have been buffed to more accurately represent their capabilities

- Semi-megabeasts are now stronger, and the ettin head body problem has been fixed.

- Megabeasts are now much tougher, being above 30 in size, having high damblocks, new attacks, and all gain skills. They can also not be caught in cage traps. It is now possible for the strongest and talented megabeasts to take on multiple champions, especially the deadly bronze colossus. The hydra can now lose multiple heads without dying.

- HFS are also much stronger and deadlier than ever before.

- A new body set decreases the chances of unlikely multiple piercings of organs, but also introduces            vulnerability in the form of major arteries in other body parts.

- Many creatures are now trainable, but most require a dungeon master to be able to train them.
- Age bugs on domestic animals have been fixed, and a cat bug fix for those still on 40d is implemented.
- Treants may also now appear on maps, and have been set to appear as a larger predator in ANY_FOREST biomes.

Creatures (New)

- All fanciful creatures are now in the game, as either rare, wandering creatures
       or as powerful semi megabeasts.

- Roc: A giant bird like megabeast that can cause serious problems for any fort.

- Basilisk: A strong, giant lizard than can permanently paralyse victims with its long stare.

- Gorgon: A humanoid, female monstrosity that can also petrify her victims.

- Phoenix: A reclusive bird like creature that lives in magma, its bones etc are a valuable commodity.

- Wyvern: An insidious, but fortunately recluse, creature. Similar to the dragon, but with non of the nobility, the wyvern is a two legged reptile that also has a powerful poison in its tail. It can be captured and used as a mount by anyone insane enough to try.

- Cave Horror: The creators of the spider race, these horrid creatures are rumoured to still exist in the deepest parts of the world. Think giant cave spiders, but at a giant size.

- Rockmen: Rockmen are elementals that have a random stone glosstype, and drop masterpiece statues on death. They are quite dangerous large predators, and can take quite a beating. Some of the may even be made of diamonds!

- Feral Vampires: These vampires are powerful night predators, and are introduced to complement the werewolf creature. They are very strong, and have a debilitating blood suck attack. They can only be killed by head removal, or by being pierced through the heart.

- Crabs and Lobsters: Crabs and lobsters now roam the world in 3 different types – vermin, large, and giant. They an be a valuable source of food, but the larger ones can pose quite a risk to any unskilled dwarf who happens to anger one! They can be found as either salt, freshwater or cave varieties.

- Giant Lizards: Taken from my chaos reigns mod, these giant lizards are powerful reptiles that roam the more tropical areas of the DF world. They have a savage bite attack. They may also be used as mounts.

- Giant Hunting Spiders: Giant hunting spiders now prowl the jungles, and although they are the smallest of the spiders apart form the vermin critters and lack the ability to make webs, they are a nippy creature who can cover ground remarkably fast, able to chase down most prey with a quick burst of speed. They also have a powerful, poisonous bite.

- Kraken: The Kraken is a large squid like creature than lives in the ocean in savage areas. Unfortunately for your dwarves, being such a creature, its amphibious, and has a taste for flesh. Being of considerable size, it can either lash or strangle dwarves, or enjoy feasting on them with its powerful bird like beak. It can also spray boiling ink at unfortunate victims.

- Giant Elephants: These are giant elephants. They make boatmurdered elephants look decidedly tame when angered.

- Giant snakes: Giant snakes come in many forms, and are found in underground areas and tropical biomes. They are very fast, and can strike quickly and have a deadly poison.

- Giant Saltwater Crocodile: Even larger, horrendously deadly crocodiles. You DEFINETLY want to keep your dwarves away from these.

- Giant Hippos: Oh, and keep them away from these as well.

- Giant Grizzly, Black and Polar bears: Giant bears are also another problem in savage and evil areas, and can make a quick snack of most other creatures.

- Giant wolves: The most common land predator on steroids. They come in packs, and are one of the adventurers worst nightmares.

- Giant Sasquatch: Another large and deadly creature, this creature will make living on savage glaciers and arctic biomes difficult.

- Piranha: Swarms of death in tropical pools, these are fish you definitely don’t want to try and ‘charge’.

- Giant Ice Wolf: Larger, even more dangerous version of the ‘normal’, evil ice wolves.

- Giant Blizzard man: A ghost one second, a deadly whirlwind of elemental fury the next. Highly rare, but can be as strong as a default df giant.

- Giant Stranglers: A dangerous problem in tropical forests. These stranglers are one of the stranger creatures added to the game.

- Giant phantom spiders: These are the ‘inbetweens’ of the giant cave spider and the giant hunting spider. They have a web attack, and are highly deadly to lone dwarves. They can be found in evil forests and mountain areas.

- Giant demon rats: dangerous large versions of the normal df critter.

- Giant blood gnats: Giant versions of the standard blood gnat, swarm evil pools and can quickly suck a victim of all their blood in just 2 or 3 bites.

- Diamond, ruby, emerald and sapphire men: Giant elementals that drop valuable statues on death. You will need a cunning plan or trained dwarves to deal with these, having high damblocks and being a minimum of size 10.

- Giant magma spider: Think of giant cave spiders. Think of fire. Think of burning. You have the picture.

- Giant magma men: The strongest new elemental. A giant, who towers wreathed in flame against all those who would stand against it.

- Giant fire snake: A giant version of the critter. These are like land snakes, but inject liquid fire into victims causing them intense fatal burns.

- Giant Purring maggot: One of the few new pacifistic creatures. These can be brought by starting dwarves or goblin civs.

- Giant Purring Cave Fly: The not so pretty result. Although its bite attack inflicts low damage, it can quickly drain a target of its blood supply.

Items (Old)

- Kobolds now use blowguns.
- Longbows and Shortbows now exist, rather than just Bow. Shortbows are smaller and do less damage, but can be carried one handed by most creatures. Longbows are pretty much standard dwarf fortress bows but renamed to avoid confusion.

Items (New)

- New weapons:

Mattocks, which come in two types. The pick mattock does blunt damage and can be used for mining. The axe mattacok can be used to cut trees, and does slash damage. Both have the chance to pierce, thanks to the pick or prong like end of the implement

Clubs, which can be made of stone,  or other material, and do bludgeon damage.

Knives and daggers: Lesser, smaller versions of the large dagger used by kobolds for all races.

Staves: Trusty old staffs that can be used as a bludgeoning weapon added for most races. These can also be made of stone, if your such inclined.

Glaive: A large, deadly polearm weapon that inflicts a lot of slash damage, but is rather heavy.

Voulge: Similar to the halberd, but does gore damage thanks to the usually broader blade of the weapon.

Partisan: A large, heavy but damaging spear weapon.

PS: These were added to try and encourage people to use polearm weapons, which would often lose out to the power and reliability of weapons such as the great axe and maul. More information about them, and anything else added can be found on wikipedia.

- New Armour:

Scale Armour: Falling in between chain mail and plate armour, scale armour is an uncommon armour type that provides greater protection than chainmail while being more mobile than plate armour. However, it is much heavier than chain mail, and takes almost as much material to produce as plate armour.

Plants (Old)

- All edible raw plants have had a halving in their growth rates to make them less of a clear cut choice for food production. I still think it’s a bit low, but without nerfing them into oblivion, its what ive settled on for now.

Plants (New)

- Tower husk, a relative of tower cap mushrooms can be grown on farm plots. It can be brought on embark, and takes 2 full years to grow to maturity. 3 husks can be processed into tower cap wood, or be brewed into a powerful drink know as dwarven absinthe, renowned throughout the world for its alcoholic effects.

Speech

-Speech files have been expanded upon to create a more diverse conversation tree. It has not been thoroughly tested, so reports of any errors would be greatly appreciated.

These are all the files in the ORIGINAL folder in the download, and are all my own work.

Expanded version

The expanded set contains contents from other mods. These are listed below, and are not of my own work.

-The minerals mod released by sean, including the economic stone selection mod, with some of its contents modified to fit in with the world theme better. This includes the removal of inobtanium, which rendered adamantium obsolete. I have tested this only to ensure world generation, but no problems should arise. If any do, don’t hesistate to point them out.
- Descriptors from the martial arts mod, also by sean.
- Plants and Trees from the dangerous wilds mod, to further flesh out the dwarf fortress environment.

NOTE: All the content in these has been used without permission, but the dangerous wilds mod developer, for example, has also included the works of other in their own modifications in the past. As an open and supportive mod community exists, I believe that reinventing the wheel is a pointless thing to do. All my work here is also useable by other modifications. If anyone wants to use them, be my guest!

Unless anything glaring come sup, this will be the only release of the mod. Ill have my hands full if the new version doesn’t change some of the issues in this version!

Installation:

Copy the entire contents of either the expanded or original folder into your dwarf fortress directory, and overwrite all files.

You will then need to generate a new world, or download the save provided below.

PS: Generating a large world can take a LONG time. It can take up to 50 minutes, on a machine with a single hyperthreaded 3ghz processor. Dwarf fortress may seem to crash - but its only sorted out important events. let it run!

Feedback and comments are welcome!

Thanks to –  Deon, for providing help in the past while I was learning to mod about a year back.
Hishan, for testing, looking over stuff, and submitting cool ideas.
Numerous metal bands that kept me sane at four in the morning.
Creators of any mods featured in the expanded version!

+Description+

Chaos Reigns is a modification which charts the constant battle of the civilised peoples of the world
against the power and fury of the blood god, Armok and his iron will that is bent on becoming the
master of all the fates of those who inhabit the lower sphere, commonly known as the world or Oram in the dwarven tongue.

I believe that this gives me free reign to add what i like rather than relying on converting any existing
universe, and allows me to build upon dwarf fortress in a way thats hopefully pleasing for you all!

However, until this is done, i would like to present to you the current version of chaos reigns, which
is vastly superior to the last version i released!

Ive tried to document most of the changes between this and the last version!

+HISTORY+

Set 80 years after the Armoks fell bastions were cast from the world by the allied powers monˇan•va (The Watchers), Oram is once again beset
by War and Strife. Although 'The Enemy' has been removed from this sphere and locked into Empyreon, man yof his most foul
servants escaped destruction, and the many tainted creations that once served him still wander the face of Oram.

The war of the greater powers had far reaching effects - the destruction of the star jewel and the age of darkness led to periods
in Orams history where once allies turned amongst themselves. The greatest of these events, the Kinslaying, led to the fragmentation
of the once mighty elvish race, and the hatred and conflicting  lies spread by Armoks servants about the destruction of the star jewel
led many of the once allied peoples - humans and wizards , dwarves, elves - to break oaths of allegiance and wage bitter wars.

The aftermath of this period is obvious - None of the once great peoples trust each other no longer, and open war is once again
threatening to further diminish the strength of the once allied kingdoms.

However, it is not just these races that have suffered. The entombing of Armok into Empyreon destroyed much of the kingdom built by
the Mother of the Night, a monˇan•va that had governed the benign creatures in the catacombs beneath the world. Having already suffered
from many of their kind being took captive and twisted into cruel, evil forms by Armok, and the infiltration of his many evils that dwelt
beneath the earth, such as the much feared race of spiders, many of the under dwellers were killed as ethereal fire ripped the
deep places of Oram apart. The Mother of the Night herself was slain in the crossfire in the last great battle. Those that survived, have in
the current age, with the exception of the Kobolds and creatures such as batmen, have succumbed to Armoks poison, twisted beyond recognition from their
original forms. Many more pursue their own agendas, bitter at the world of light and Armoks Hell that has taken so much from them.

Armoks forces themselves have not escaped the confusion following the entombing of their lord, and the replacement of the star jewel by the new vessels of light - the moon and sun in the Age of Strife.
Cut off from their master, many of his once most trusted followers - Demons and the dreaded Vampires - pursue their own ends.
Even the most loyal of his forces, such as Chosen warriors wage wars on once former allies, led by dark powers that seek to surmount Armok and take his place
as the new lord of the fates of Oram.

As the survivors from the Age of Strife begin to rebuild their civilisations, only one thing is clear.

In this age, there is no peace, no respite. Only a unending fight for the survival of Oram.

+++NEW RACES+++ (Most races come with their own custom items, armour, weapons, toys etc.)

+Wizards - Men and women gifted with an un-natural attunement to the sphers of magic, some believe by The Watchers to combat the new threat from Armok. Even though the relatively new order managed to
destroy the Order of the Forked Serpent, they were exiled due to the accusation that all magic power was derived from Armok, and not The Watchers as was originally
thought. In the Ages between the Age of Strife and The Age of Myth, the Wizard order has grown from a collection of like minded exiles into a kingdom of its own,
creating an army of gifted men and women that strive to hold Armoks tide of darkness back.

-Most weapons are magic staffs, ranging in damage!
-Have no conventional melee weapons, although staff can be used in close combat, and they make, distribute and use enchanted weapons.
-Has no 'hard' armour, only soft armour. They also employ the use of magical items to shield them from attacks, rings that can bend sword blades and divert incoming projectiles.
-Has magical unarmed attacks, and can throw fireballs limited distances, even when unarmed.
-Weak stature means they are slower and more vunerable to melee attacks
-Have religion based on regional powers, with appropriate religion spheres
-Have unique trap components

+'Eastern' Human Race - Men allied for most of the ages with the elves, and for the most part have avoided the fall of their race to Armok.
How long they can avoid being drawn into the conflict is a matter is jsut that - a matter of when rather than if.

-Are faster, more agile but slightly weaker than normal humans due to their training style and affiliation with the elves.
-Weapons either do more damage and are heavier, or less damage, lighter but with higher critical hit.
-Have a pantheon religion, restricted to represent their belief systems.

+Orcs - Creatures not seen before the fall of the Starjewel, the method of their creation by Armok is unknown. Vast numbers of them were
bred during the age of darkness following its destruction, and many survived the fate of destruction and entombment. They continue
the will of Armok, being much more loyal than the original armok footsoldier, the goblin.

-Tower above men and are powerful in close combat.
-Will not flee battles
-Armed and armoured like goblins. Game will generate a random number of Orcs/Goblin civilisations
-Are lead by a champion of Armok
-Have unique trap components

+Chosen Warriors - Men fallen to Armok during the Age of Strife, and mutated horribly by his dark powers. They are the most dreaded
of Armoks foot troops, being the best armed and armoured, and trained by a life of savagery to believe that only the spilling of blood
in Armoks name is the destiny of them and their kin. They show no remorse or fear, and are so filled with the remnants of Armoks
spirits that blows that would kill most men are simply shrugged off without notice.

-Wield weapons that do incredible amounts of damage, and wear armour that can turn even a deathblow into only a fleshwound.
-Have no ranged weapons beneath siege engine size - such weapons are not for Armoks chosen.
-Fanatical and crazed, and will fight to the death.
-Are lead by a champion of Armok
-Can enter martial trance, fuelled by Armoks dark energies.
-Have unique trap components

+Dark Elves - Elves that assented to the kinslaying the Age of Strife, and therefore doomed their souls for eternity. The
curse of spilling their owns race blood was harsh, forcing the perpetrators to slowly degenerate from what they once were to creatures
ruled by vampyric urges and lusts, their every waking hour directed only in the perfection of cruelty, torture and blood spilling.

Godless and Abandoned, the Dark Elves show an alarming cohesion. What new dark powers command them only they themselves know - it is unknown
if they are directed by old allies of Armok, or never before encountered monˇan•va or fimean•va is unknown

-Are armed with vicious weapons that are designed to cause the maximum amount of pain to their enemies, and kill them through bloodloss
and poison rather than a swift end. Although  more damaging, this means that the weapons often stick into opponents. Their weapons
are also heavier than those of high elves, having lost most of the finesse of craft they once possessed.

However, their equipment is still lighter than that of human manuafacture.

-Armour provides the same level of protection as human armour, but is lighter in construction.
-Their darkbows are of more use in close combat, sporting blades from the upper and lower limbs of the weapon. The ammo these
weapons fire are also prone to becoming stuck in their targets.
-Their curse to Armok, combined with an elves natural atunement, has allowed some amongst them to wield powerful, dark magic
with which to unleash death upon their enemies.
-Can enter martial trance.
-Worships evil gods, monˇan•va or fimean•va attempting to fill the vacuum of power left by Armok
- Unlike normal elves, dark elves are mortal - although showing no signs of aging, they are a forsaken race, and are doomed to leave the mortal plane.
-Have unique trap components

+Sorcerers of Armok - When men were first granted the gifts of magic, to command the force of the magical spheres to standards even
the elves did not have, their were those who used it for their own gain. These men easily succumbed to the temptations of Armok, and
when they learned that through Armok, they could achieve power and immortality beyond their comprehension, The Order of the Forked
Serpent was founded to overthrow those in power. The destruction of the Order, and the dispersion of its members led to the exiling
of all the practioners of magic within the human kingdoms, a pyrrhic victory for the enemies of Armok.

The survivors of the Order of the Forked Serpent have rebanded under new names and monikers, and continue to work on their masterpiece -
the release of Armok from Empyreon.

-Most weapons are magic staffs, ranging in damage! Being few in number and far older than the Wizards, they have mastered the use of magic, and have access to the most powerful staffs.
-Have no conventional melee weapons, although staff can be used in close combat, and they use possessed weapons.
-Have no 'hard' armour, only soft armour. They also employ the use of magical items to shield them from attacks, rings that can bend sword blades and divert incoming projectiles.
-Have magical unarmed attacks, and can throw fireballs limited distances, even when unarmed.
-Unlike 'normal' wizards, sorcerors are maintained by the powers of Armok, and have none of the physical weaknesses of wizards, and seem to feel nopain, or show any signs of fear.
-Are lead by a champion of Armok
-Have unique trap components

+Vampires - During the Age of Darkness, Armok came across those creatures that would become to be known as humans still awaiting to awake by the command of The Sleeper.
By his foul methods, Armok awakened these creatures and decieved them, telling them that he was their creator. His chosen children became the creatures mortals and Elves
now name Vampyres, deadly creatures of the night that maintain their existence by the consumption of blood. In the Age of Darkness, until Armoks entombment, their numbers grew great and the
first awakened, named Nosferatu in their own foul language went forth and propagated their species in the darkness, preying on any human and elf alike. When the Sun were fixed in the Skies above the lower sphere,
the vampyres, long having fallen to Armok and never seeing the light of the Starcrystal, were burned and consumed by its rays, and could scarce endure its gaze for long at first, and thus the reign of terror
they had caused ceased. It was long ere before they could stand even in moonlight, and after the emtombment, what was left of the vampire race
was confined to raiding settlements in the night just to survive. In the Age of Myth, as Armoks power began to return, they took up residence once again in their tower of old assigned to them by the dark powers.

-Immortal race exceedingly dangerous in unarmed close combat
-Undead, with only the removal of the head or destruction of the heart killing them utterly. They are also supernaturally energetic, being able to cover ground at great speed and do not tire in combat.
-Vampires do not bleed, do not tire, and have no need for normal sustainance.
-Whilst they use all human weapons, and armour similar to that of the dark elves, they also have ancient weapons that have seen use since the Age Of Darkness. These blades un-naturally sharp, and have higher
damage and lower stick chance than normal weapons of the same type.
-Are lead by a champion of Armok
-Have unique trap components

+++CHANGED RACES+++

Made Playable!

+Goblins - Survivors of the original armies of Armok during the War of Jewelled Star, and the War of Night, now playable to allow
for the satisfaction of human town slaughtering the good old fashioned way, with Armokian steel!

Mostly unchanged from the the dwarf fortress version.

+Kobolds - Remnants of the once great civilisation that dwelt beneath the worlds surface, before the entombment of Armok in his realm
of Empyreon, the kobolds of the known ages are mere shadows of what they once were.

Mostly unchanged from the the dwarf fortress version.

+High Elves - Those who survived the kinslaying of the elves, although vastly diminished in power, continue their struggle against Armok.

- Live in cities and have new weapons and armour, tougher, more milaristic, but fewer in number than Wood elves.

+Wood Elves - After the kinslaying, many elves forsook the war against Armok, which they saw as being unwinnable without the
direct influence of The Watchers. Believing themselves cursed and at fault for the destruction of many things in the lower sphere,
they now try to safeguard the life of the world against either of the warring factions. They despise Armok, but equally those who oppose
him at the cost of the other creatures and spirits that walk the wilds.

- Default elves, pretty unchanged from the normal dwarf fortress type. However, their natural affinity has drawn Nature spirits, lower
lesser watchers, to guide them in protection of the forests, and have manifested themselves as great, animated trees which protect
the territories of the wood elves.

They also no longer consume the flesh of the dead, like in the defualt dwarf fortress.

+Dwarves!

-New weapons and Armour, that provide slightly more protection and damage, but are slightly heavier than the standard equipment.
Also, they have been granted a unique weapn, known as a thunderhammer, which is a powerful dwarf constructed war hammer that
competes, damage wise, with some of the two handed weapons they are unable to wield.

-Have a new unique trap component, giant hammers.

+Humans!

- Have a king, like the old version, and may also have mayors as well as milatary leaders.

+++NEW POWER CREATURES+++
-Demon Prince - A servant of Armok, who is deemed worthy enough, unites his spirit and a demons to attain almost godlike power, to further Armoks cause.
-Wraith-King - A creature whose mortal soul has been devoured or enslaved to Armok becomes a wraith. The most powerful of these soul thralls eventually find service as one of Armoks most fearsome enemies.
-Forest Spirit - A lesser watcher who serves the forests of world, taking the physical form of a giant treant. They guard the enclaves of their most loyal servants, the wood elves.

-Nosferatu - One of the original sires of all vampire kind, these ancient beings are supernaturally powerful and deadly, even more so than that of their lesser kind.
-Spirits Of Fire - Lesser demons of Armok that survived the cataclysm. Many have taken control of the remnants of Armoks forces.
-Blood Dragon - Dragons that entered a pact with Armok, and helped destroyed the Star Jewel and the rest of their race. They are mutated to extreme levels by this demonic influence, sporting 3 heads. Many rogue elements of Armok flock to these creatures.

+++NEW MEGABEASTS+++
-Black Dragon - 1st generation dragons, rendered insane by the Star jewels demise. Lingering in shadows, they have lost the ability to fly but have grown in size and their blood itself has turned into a potent poison.
-Lesser Dragon - 2nd generation dragons, born after the Starjweles demise, and therefore lacking the majority of its powers it granted to their kin. Cannot fly, or breathe fire and is smaller!
-Steel Colossus - A colossus, one of the old races. This one however, is made of steel rather than bronze. Armed with a deadly, giant weapon.
-Insane Wizard War Titan - Giant machines once made to serve the wizards to combat the giant creatures engineered by Armok. With the controlling starjewel destroyed, they now wander the land, mindlessly killing all in their way.
-Roc - giant mythical birds, fathers of the lesser creature, the giant eagle. Forced out of their homes by the destruction of their homes in the cataclsm of Armoks downfall, the survivors now take up life in the new world.

+++FANCIFUL CREATURES AND SEMIMEGABEASTS+++
Chimera Added ingame - Corpses said to be in close proximity to demonic influence or a collection undead spirit can be warped and molded into these horrific creatures.
Centaur Added ingame - A noble creature, older even than the elves.
Griffon Added ingame - Another survivor from an age past, griffons are one of the few creatures of the first age to still survive in any number.
Gorgon Added Ingame - Humans who have unwittingly become hosts to one of the many lesser demonic spirits of the world. They can drain blood and have the ability to petrify all who look upon them'
Basilisk Added Ingame - A giant lizard from one of the first ages. It has the ability to petrify all who look directly into its eyes.

+++NEW CREATURES+++
-Sirens - A Vile rekative of the harpy. It can permantly hynoptise an enemy with its song, before devouring them.
-Shades - In the age of darkness, many spirits could not ascend to the higher planes. These spirits formed roving bands of shades, with only revenge on their minds.

-Giant Lizards - A giant lizard, common in the savage areas of the world.
-Giant Snakes - Giant serpents, whos speedy ambush can take many by suprise. Highly venomous.
-Squigs - bizarre creatures, related to fungi, who are domesticated by cave dwelling species much like cows are by the overland species. Can give a nasty bite.
-Giant Hunting Spiders - lesser relatives of the giant cave spider. Luckily, they still show an aversion to light. They cannot spin webs, and their poison is not as strong.
-Giant Magma Spiders - A powerful creature of Armok. Although rarely encountered, the giant magma spider is one of the deadliest 'natural' creatures known to civilisation. Can breathe fire.
-Scarab Swarms (Flying and non flying) - Vicious, evil beetles capable of swarmig any creature like land piranhas, ripping its flesh from its bones it seconds.
-Giant Scarabs - Giant versions of its smaller cousins. Thankfully, these do not come in large swarms.
-Vampire bats - Vicious swarms of bats with a difference - they prefer sentient flesh to fruit!
-Sorcerors (wilderness, not affiliated with faction) - Rogue sorcerors, cast out by whatever group they belonged to.
-Feral Orcs - Fragments of Armoks Army that have not heeded any call of servitude.
-Feral Goblins - Fragments of Armoks Army that have not heeded any call of servitude.
-Nightstalkers - Fearsome crossbreeds that escaped Armoks halls - a cross between the dreaded spider and Armoks own tentacle demons. They have the added ability of being nigh invisible until they strike.
-Swans, Geese and their giant variants. - Self explanatory. Used by good races like high elves and wood elves as a means of transport for the nobles amongst them.
-Fire drakes - Relatives of dragons, who not having the level of sentience of their larger relatives, have not beeen affected by the fall of the star jewel. They live in the desert areas of the world, where they are a top natural predator.
-Rock and Gem Men - Relatives of the Iron Men. Their origins are unknown.
-Evil treants - Treants which have succumbed to evil forces.
-Dryads and Evil Dryads - lesser tree spirits, related to treants and their tainted brethren.
-Swamp Trolls - Trolls that have escaped Armoks servitude, and have adapted to their new habits. Their wide diet leads them to have a highly corrosive acid in their stomachs, which they can use as a powerful projectile weapon.
-Mountain Trolls - The most ancient of trolls eventually became mountain trolls, and lay dormant in the mountains until the end of the age of strife. These creatures are much larger than normal by almost a third, and have skin as hard as rock. Semimegabeast.
-Palemen - Vicious demons, whose origins are lost to time. They have powerful psychic and close combat abilities. Common in bedtime stories across Oram, where they are infamous for the luring of children into their dens before consuming them. (base donated by hishan, modified by me)

+++NEW TOYS AND OTHER ITEMS+++
-Tortureboxes
-Severed Heads
-Skeletons
-Other types of toy axe
-Wizard books and crystals for wizards
-Toy swords for eastern human civilisation

+++NEW MATERIALs+++

Many new minerals were firned as the shattered essence of the Starjewel rained down on Oram and became part of it.
Many of these materials, such as Mithril or Adamantine are a direct result of its cooling essence. Other metals
described are alloys of its essence or remains and pre-existing minerals.

-Mithril, DEEP material
-Impure mithril, mithril that has been contaminated by surrounding rock.
-Keen, an alloy of impure mithril and Steel
-Jadebronze and Jadeiron - elemnts combined with magical woadstone to improve their effectiveness!
-Wraithbone - A metal made by enchanting the bones of the dead with magical woadstone, the result is a macabre metal that is stronger than bronze, but less than iron.
-Dragonsteel- A mythical metal even rarer than mithril or adamantine. It is the result of the compressed soul of a dragon, and can only be obtained by killing the creature.

+++MAGICAL STONE+++

The death of the star jewel and the intense rain of material lead to the concentration of much of the star jewels power being locked
away in various deposits as described above. Some of this material contains high pockets of mana, and formed powerful crystal
deposits named woadstone, due to the first discovery of the blue crystal seemingly the colorr of woad. It is a tightly controlled secret
what each crystal does - although their are 5 known types of woadstone.

-Purple
-Blue
-Red
-Green
-White

A note of caution. Some woadstones are known to have lethal properties when disturbed.

+++NEW GEMS+++
-Dragonstones and Starshards formed by the death of the Starcrystal

+++NEW FUEL+++
-Anthracite, a higher rank coal that produces more coke when processed
-A type of woadstone is rumoured to create a lot of fuel when processed correctly

+++NEW PLANTS+++

3 Evil plants - Blood Reed, Blood Grass and Blood Orchids
1 Good plant - Blue Orchid
1 New tree - Barrel Cactus

ADDENDUM: The fixes above will give you the ability to use bows as a wepaon in fortress mode. Unfortuantely, they will use the crossbowman skill. Their is no way i can change this, bar changing the profession name. I will relase further fixes to try and correct this annoying error.

So, that is it for this release! Cant wait for new df features as a modder! Hope you enjoy!

DF General Discussion / Epic legends: Post yours
« on: August 27, 2008, 10:41:18 am »
So i was testing the new version of chaos reigns, and getting it ready for its too long overdue release, when i noticed an awesome megabeast battle!

It seems that chosen warriors are indeed the monsters that live up to my imagination!

He was, unfortunately murdered by one of his own kind just some 50 years later.

So, does anyone else have any awesome screens from their legends mode?

DF Gameplay Questions / More tiles on a screen!
« on: August 20, 2008, 11:55:21 am »
Ive been hoping to try the new fewature of being able to display more tiles in a view on my 1440 by 900 monitor, but i cant get it to work no matter what ive tried.

I have black space on, na dhave used the correct grid squares from the wiki!

Either everything is stretched or i have massive black gaps top and bottom and the game in the centre, rather than more tiles onscreen.

If anybody could help id appreciate.

DF Modding / Changing siege announcement messages?
« on: July 25, 2008, 11:10:59 am »
Im currently modding chaos reigns to be compatible with the new version of dwarf fortress, and are doing the taunts for many races that are added to the mod.

However, i was wondering what programs open the FILE type files in the DATA folder of a dwarf fortress installation. I  think they are a valid filetype of some description but just with the extension removed, opening it as a text reveals random numbers and letters which obviously means that notepad cannot read it, and neither could Dev C++.

Does anyone know what these files are opened with? Id love to make custom siege notifications etc, to go along with the taunt modifications im doing.

DF Modding / Chaos Reigns <DISCUSSION

The current release is for a older version of Dwarf fortress. The working temporary version will be released tommorow, with probably incomplete documentation just for public testing. In the meantime, if you have any ideas PLEASE post them, and ill try to be more attentive to postings. Sorry.

CHAOS REIGNS v0.9.3
+DOWNLOAD LINK+ (includes readme and installation instructions)

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=284

+Description+

Chaos Reigns is a modification which charts the constant battle of the civilised peoples of the world
against the power and fury of the blood god, Armok and his iron will that is bent on becoming the
master of all the fates of those who inhabit the lower sphere.

I am in the process of writing a backstory/chronology which will give you more of an idea what
im basing the construction of the mod on, and the obvious places where inspiration has
been taken!

Ive tried to document most of the changes between this and the last version, which should be found in the readme along with installation instructions.

So without further ado, here are the changes the Chaos Reigns mod currently Implements!

+++NEW RACES+++ (Most races come with their own custom items, armour, weapons, toys etc.)

+Wizards - Men gifted with the power of magic, some believe by The Watchers to combat the new threat from Armok. Even though the relatively new order managed to
destroy the Order of the Forked Serpent, they were exiled due to the accusation that all magic power was derived from Armok, and not The Watchers as was originally
thought. In the Ages between the Age of Strife and The Age of Myth, the Wizard order has grown from a collection of like minded exiles into a kingdom of its own,
creating an army of gifted men and women that strife to hold Armoks tide of darkness back.

-Have pantheon religion, with appropriate religion spheres

+'Eastern' Human Race - Men allied for most of the ages with the elves, and for the most part have avoided the fall of thier race. to Armok.
-Are faster, more agile but slightly weaker than normal humans due to their training style and affiliation with the elves.
-Weapons either do more damage and are heavier, or less damage, lighter but with higher critical hit.
-Have a pantheon religion, restricted to represent their belief systems.

+Orcs - Creatures not seen before the fall of the Starjewel, the method of thier creation by Armok is unknown.

- Worship dark powers

+Chosen Warriors - Men fallen to Armok during the Age of Strife, and mutated horribly by his dark powers. They are the most dreaded
of Armoks foot troops, being the best armed and armoured, and trained by a life of savagery to believe that only the spilling of blood
in Armoks name is the destiny of them and their kin.

-Wield weapons that do incredible amounts of damage, and wear armour that can turn even a deathblow into only a fleshwound.
-Have no ranged weapons beneath siege engine size - such weapons are not for Armoks chosen.
-Fanatical and crazed, and will fight to the death.
-Worship dark powers
-Can enter martial trance.

+Dark Elves - Elves that assented to the kinslaying the Age of Strife, and therefore doomed their souls to Armok for eternity. The
curse of spilling their owns race blood was harsh, forcing the perpetrators to slowly degenerate from what they once were to creatures
ruled by vampyric urges and lusts, their every waking hour directed only in the perfection of cruelty, torture and blood spilling.

Although they do not assent to Armoks command, they have no choice but to fufil the conditions laid down by the curse.

The ammo these
weapons fire are also prone to becoming stuck in thier targets.
-Their curse to Armok, combined with an elves natural atunement, has allowed some amongst them to wield powerful, dark magic
with which to unleash death upon their enemies.
-Can enter martial trance.
-Worships evil forces

+Sorcerers of Armok - When men were first granted the gifts of magic, to command the force of The Watchers to standards even
the elves did not have, thier were those who used it for their own gain.

-Worship dark powers

+Lizardmen - A sentient race of reptiles awakened by the Starjewel, the lizardmen inhabit the jungles and swamps of the world. They show no love
for either Armok or the other children of The Sleeper, who they both deem to be responsible for the pains of the planet and its spirits, and hinder
both sides where they can, especially if either disrespect their territory. Next to the Elves, it is the lizardmen which have the highest knowledge in
the observations of the heavens and natural cycles, and are one of the few races to have this knowledge survive through the Ages of Strife and Darkness.

-Use more primitive weapons made of wood or minor metals, but are well skilled in combat.
-Are equipped with blowguns, which are favoured over the more traditional bow of other races.
-Live in tropical, usually wet, areas where they build settlements and erect temples to nature spirits.

-Tigermen - Another sentient race awakened by the Starjewel. A proud, physically strong race, the Age Of Darkness further hardened their hearts to the other inhabitants of
the lower sphere, encouraging their already feral, if intelligent, populace to become ever more warlike. They despise Armok, for the turmoils he placed upon their race for their refusal
to join his forces, and what little friendship they had with the other races of the free world vanished when their calls for aid went unheard. In the Golden Age, their
heart only yearns for vengeance, and outsiders are now only welcomed by the sight of their last visitors, grimly smiling down from atop the Tigermens spears.

-Use primitive weapons, but are well skilled in combat.
-Live in tropical areas, where they build settlements and worship spirts dedicated to physical strength and revenge.

+Antmen - Twisted forms created in the ruin of the catacombs by the polluting presence of Armoks evil, these creatures are just one of the many forms the denizens of that
place became. They live deep in the bowels of the world, with no allies, and enemies of all. Such creatures are protected by rebellious watchers from Armoks own forces,
manifest in terrifying forms, who use them for their own gains.

-Are led and grown by a gigantic antman queen.
-Use minor metals, and are limited to only spears and blowguns, which they wield with little skill
-Are poor combatants, and make up for this by sheer numbers.

+Spidermen - Twisted forms created in the ruin of the catacombs by the polluting presence of Armoks evil, these creatures are just one of the many forms the denizens of that
place became. They live deep in the bowels of the world, with no allies, and enemies of all. Such creatures are protected by rebellious watchers from Armoks own forces,
who use them for their own gains.

-Are led and grown by a colossal giant cave spider.
-Use minor metals, and are limited to only spears and blowguns, which they wield with little skill
-Are poor combatants, and make up for this by sheer numbers, and their ability to paralyse their prey with thier webbing.

+Blizzardmen - A lower fimean•va, aligned with the forces of Ice and Storm among Armoks forces abandoned his service when he was entombed into Empyreon.
Hoping to create a empire of its own, the watcher fled from the foes which pursued it to where it knew none could follow - in the wastes of ice which dominate areas
of the lower sphere. In this realm, the fimean•va gathered many other, weaker elemental ubal's/ano's (spirits), and bound itself, ensnaring them in its iron will.
The Watcher took the form of an Queen, dark and as cold as the chill of winter and terrible to behold.
by mortal eyes.

-Are powerful, unarmed combatants
-Armed with enchanted swords crafted by the evil magic of the ice queen, but have no armour save for shields.
-Are elementals, and are therefore made of water.
-Governed, lead and maintained by the ice queen.

+Undead - After the destruction of the Catacombs by Armok at the end of the Age of Darkness, the restless souls of the dead had no place left to dwell, or light to direct them
to the Halls of the Higher Sphere were they could find rest, or reincarnation. Evil lesser spirits, survivors of the cataclysm, took advantage of the lost, capturing their wandering
spirits and binding them to them. Thus, they could utilise their mortal bodies as a new tool to fight the free world. These watchers took the form of brooding wraiths wrapped in impenatrable shadow,
and directed the bodies of their thralls to construct new bastions of evil, and cities and settlements long thought lost in the battles between Armok and The Watchers were revived, the material
remains of the war dead once again animated in the name of chaos and bloodlust.

-Weak in unarmed combat, due to their bones being much more fragile than those held together by sinew and skin
-The dead use equipment that has rusted and aged during its time unused before the reawakening of their former owners. This means they provide slightly worse protection and damage than normal weapons.
-Since they are nothing more than thralls of the evil fimean•va, they are relentless - they will not flee from combat, and being dead, do not bleed, feel pain, or can be paralysed. They also have no interal organs which can be pierced to deliver a death blow.
-Worship dark powers

+Vampires - During the Age of Darkness, Armok came across those creatures that would become to be known as humans still awaiting to awake by the command of The Sleeper.
By his foul methods, Armok awakened these creatures and decieved them, telling them that he was their creator. His chosen children became the creatures mortals and Elves
now name Vampyres, deadly creatures of the night that maintain their existence by the consumption of blood. In the Age of Darkness, until Armoks entombment, their numbers grew great and the
first awakened, named Nosferatu in their own foul language went forth and propagated thier species in the darkness, preying on any human and elf alike.
In the Age of Myth, as Armoks power began to return, they took up residence once again in thier tower of old assigned to them by the dark powers.

-Worship dark powers

+++CHANGED RACES+++

Seperated into seperate subspecies because of the backstory!

+High Elves - Those who survived the kinslaying of the elves, although diminished in power, continue their struggle against Armok.

However, their natural affinity has drawn Nature spirits, lower
watchers, to guide them in protection of the forests, and have manifested themselves as great, animated trees which protect
the territories of the wood elves.

DF Modding / Error with new metals
« on: January 19, 2008, 11:42:00 am »
So, im trying to add some new metals, materials and reactions to my mod, but for some reason, it appears it doesnt work. Whenever an adventurer starts out with a weapon made out of the material, after a few seconds it disappears. All items made out of keen on my adventurer then just become 'keen covering'

I wanted to make mithril an ore, but had to make it a thread metal to get the game to stop generating a error log.

The new materials are impure mithril, which is mineable only to either sell or to make into keen, a strong alloy of steel and mithril

mithril in its pure form is found down near adamantium, as a deep material, or at least it should be.

The error log gives me one error:

Unrecognized Material Token: METAL_ORE

(i have since removed all trace of METAL_ORE from the reaction files. I dont know why it doesnt work: its used in the default raws.)

Anyhows, heres the code.

DF Modding / RELEASE v0.85: Chaos Reigns Mod 38c Compatible
« on: January 06, 2008, 07:22:00 am »
Release 4 (and a bit :P) (0.85)

The chaos reigns mod is my personal project to enhance dwarf fortress, and tell a story regarding the blood god Armok, and those who oppose him.

This is still in testing, and it is far from complete.

So, i present to you the fourth release of the mod, which is a great improvement over the previous release.

Please read the readme.

*DARK ELVES*

Having fallen to worshipping the blood god Armok in exchange for the salvation of their souls, the dark elves forsook their sacred blessings and turned their back on all morality, values and ideals.

Corrupt and sinister, and bloodthirsty in the extreme, dark elves revel in the pain of other, lesser creatures. They hold no 'sacred' belief over nature like normal elves, and their weapons, culture and items reflect their warlike nature.

Dark elves live in deep forests, where they carve out dark bastions with which to launch raids to capture prisoners solely to torture for pleasure. Only the pleasing of Armok can save thier souls from eternal damnation, a blessing, and a curse.

They make use of evil creatures which they train, goad or mind control into serving them.

Dark elves are also magical creatures. By losing their souls to Armok, he granted them the ability to control the power of the ethers, increasing their power both physically and mentally.

Dark elves are commanded by the Kabal, a society of nobles who have risen to power through treachery and bloodshed. They dont tend to stay there for long, since every dark elf is a selfish, power thirsty organism that only understands the concept of total domination.

Dark Elves maintain some relations with the other races, mainly trade and are tolerated in return. However, they are despised for how quickly such a agreement can be changed.

Dark elves are playable in all modes

*ORIENTAL HUMANS*

Differing from the other humans of the land, the more mysterious, ancient civilisations of humanity still exist. These humans differ from there more less civilised cousins, and possess different weapons, clothes and customs. Their main religions revolve around sun, dawn and order worship, and the code of honour is strict and upheld to the letter. Brave warriors, they also provide valuable materials that would be otherwise hard to aquire, such as rare silks and spices from across the world.

Strictly opposed to the ruinous powers that strike across the world, they help the all the other free peoples battle against the great enemy. However, they have a certain disdain for other humans, who they blame for partly contributing to there enemies power through questionable deities, who they believe could be demons.

*WIZARDS*

After the great disagreement, the Wizards, servants of the higher purpose, were cast out of normal human society, deemed as heretics. Becoming nomads, these outcasted men and women together formed a new society made up purely of magic-capable humans and their offspring. Continuing their mission, to appose the blood god Armok and all who pay any homage to him, they actively defend all races of the world.

Humans dislike wizards, and are sometimes openly hostile. However, many humans see the powers that the wizards possess as vital in the coming storm. The demons gather like vultures to the rotting corpse of civilisation.

Wizards are extremely intelligent and have a love for wisdom. They are powerful spell casters, but are physically weaker than other humans.

Wizards can be tested in adventure mode - i have not tested them in fortress mode

*URUKS*
In the first great war between Armok and the world, it soon became apparent that the goblin, althought numerous and possesing a sly form of animal cunning, was incapable of holding back the combined armies of the free world.

Taking all the faults from the normal goblin away, Armok hoped to have created the perfect footsoldier with which to turn the tide back within his favour. However, their creation came too late, and once Armoks last bastion was taken, and his forces scattered, the Uruks fled into the hills away from the retribution of the victors.

Here, they have multiplied, and have regrown in strength, erecting dark towers and creating new armies. Along with their kinsfolk, the goblins, they are now retaking the fight to the free world, if not for Armok, then for revenge.

*SKEVEN*

Many tales across the ages have talked of hideous beasts that inhabit the many dark passages that run through the world. Many a dying ratman and kobold spoke about even larger, intelligent inhabitants of the dark. Such rumours turned out to be true - from their underground lairs hordes of skeven, as they have been named in the human language, pillage and raid through the plains of the free world. Humanoid rats - similair to ratmen, but much larger, more powerful, and more intelligent. Their motives or origins are unknown.

*CHOSEN WARRIORS*

The chosen warriors of the dark powers present the most threat to all the free world. Compromised of traitors from the age of myth, the dark forces sweep across the land murdering and pillaging where they can. They have payed a massive price for allying themselves with the dark powers - mutated, driven insane, and their souls slowly devoured.

Invested with mighty powers, they stand taller than any man, elf or dwarve, and vastly more powerful. Permanantly filled with rage and bloodlust, they descend with cries of bloodlust in the name of Armok to slaughter all in their path. Knowing no fear, they are a whirlwind of destruction in any close combat melee, but shun ranged weapons.

They are the arch enemy of all the free people, especially the wizards, who use their own ruinous powers against them.

Although allied to the goblins and uruks, they despise them, as they are seen as
weaklings compared to them.

Chosen warriors are often lead by a powerful dark entity, either a daemon, a possesed daemon prince, or a powerful wraith.

Using powerful, ruinous magics they continue to try and summon demons into the realm of the living. (*Watch this space, as soon as toady allows co habitation*)

*UNDEAD*
Deep from within forgotten tombs, the dead stir. Angered by their civilisations early destruction, the khalmir rise from their decaying, swamped cities to reclaim the land from the living. Who or what leads them is unknown, but it is believed to be a far old, insidious foe than that of even the force that drives the chosen warriors on their campaign.

All other information is unknown. No diplomats or scouts returned alive.

Ive got both wraiths and vampires to appear in quests, its awesome!

A question about vampires, is there any way i can get them to start with weapons WITHOUT being a separate civilisation?

Anyways thanks for any help given, im new and i have the tendency to spam certains tags! And i dont really know what is needed/unneeded.

The unfortunate end to one of my most long lived adventurers yet. During his short life, he chalked up 4 vampire kills, 2 wraith kills, survived two mace lords, a lesser dragon and even killed two insane war machines all on his own. His last deed was to kill a macelord who had been terrorising the local community. Hefting his !!keen battleaxe!! he headed out to find the foul creature.

After much searching, he couldnt find the temple where the cursed one was. He decided to take out his anger on the goblins inhabiting the tower of scourbad, and  managed to cut about 22 of them down when suddenly..

Ava was a dark elf born in 816. Although accounts vary, it is universally agreed that she was guided by forces unknown. A few issues still trouble scholars, but the picture is fairly clear.

In The midspring of 1050, Ava led a expedition towards the northern wastes. All contact has been lost.

DIARY ENTRY. The date is smudged by blood spatter, along with much of the pages and contents. You can make out several passages...

*
Everythings proceding well,me and my companions are in good spirits. The wildlife so far seems to be rather.. peaceful, and our supplies are still plentiful. I doubt this will continue, but one can hope

*
We arrived at the northern shore today, Cirimbar is in few to the north, its fiery peak illuminating the horizon. The others want to sleep, but its too exposed. We must find more suitable shelter

*
Damnation! Helmhammer, our experianced hammerself decided to go out on watch, and in his immense stupidity, even greater than his skill fell asleep. All that remained this morning were bloody shreds and parts of his keen armour. I think it was some kind of hunting bird. The plan to follow the coast has been abandoned, and instead will wikk make through the freezing forests to the south east for cover.

<Several>

*
..h..ead...ambus.... by a pack of..... Its now only me and the guide left. We must contnue north if we are ever to reclaim what was stolen. Its probably karma, he did after all try and steal from our food ration packs.

*
The food situation is not good. The guide went out to find something to eat. I doubt he,ll find anything in these parts.

*THe guide returned with nothing. His eyes are dilating and hes talking about wandering monsters. I told him to be quiet, and instead do something useful, like actually direct me to our destination. he said that even though he knew these parts, he had never come so far north. He's talking about stopping our journey and travelling south, and hes already started to pack a separate giant cave spider silk bag and leave me up here to continue onward. Ill  make sure he will fufil another use before he leaves, if he attempts that is.

*
The guide died today. Needless to say, with a fufilling meal behind me i think i can make it.

*I entered into what the guides scrawlings report are the Swamp of sinews. I have spotted tracks from possible human immigrants, and are making towards them for direction. They'll probably be unarmed, so we can always persuade some of them to help.

explanation?

I never knew vampires could form migrations. They are intelligent creatures, and have a entity tag in the mod so you can play them as adventurers in my mod. Does this mean that somewhere there is vampire settlements?

Here is the code

DF Gameplay Questions / Making custom race use bows in fortress mode?
« on: June 02, 2008, 11:36:00 am »
Yep, no matter what i do my dark elves refuse to pick up the nicely made bone darkbows and instead just continue to spar, even though i have more wooden arrows than anyone would need.

Is there any way i can get them to pick the bows up and use them? Or will i have to edit the raws and make bows temporarily crossbows for my game?
