DF Gameplay Questions / Is the new combat system largely cosmetic?
« on: April 02, 2010, 04:45:25 am »
So this new combat system is pretty cool. I'm slashing people's muscles apart and bruising their fat, which is pretty rad.

But it sort of begs the question, how does this system change the combat dynamic? Does anyone know what slashing tendons and stuff actually does that wasn't achieved before with the old brown yellow red system?

So I'm starting out as an E style leader with Persuasion 3, Psychology 2, Law 2, Writing 2, Music 2, and 1200 dollars. I've moved out of my apartment to save money, but I'm not entirely sure where to start. My last LCS was crippled by an onslaught of conservative legislations because I failed to procure the resources neccessary to maintain my glorious crusade.

EDIT: Just spent 22 days selling brownies. TIME IS RUNNING OUT!

The wiki beginner guide says to recruit lawyers. Why would someone do that? Are they especially persuasive or somesuch?

Curses / Why isn't teaching doing anything?
« on: December 04, 2009, 08:10:37 pm »
I'm trying to teach my guys things, and it would appear that the "teach" function only proceeds to do anything whenever it feels like it.

Can a subject be only taught once?

EDIT: Okay, so the teachers will only teach if they are good at the topic, I see.

PS. recently, the LCS made the news, and the day after an article aired that said "LCS SORRY". Is this the emergence of the CCS? How might I find one of their recruits? My leader and her sidekick are both female, so they can't get into the gentlemen's club to find disreputables.

DF General Discussion / A Safety-Net
« on: January 19, 2009, 11:54:43 am »
To me, Dwarf Fortress is a futile effort, a task not feasible to be performed in the span of a man's life. The fact that only One of the many, many arcs will be completed by 2040 by which time he will likely be old and feeble is a testement to this fact. Regardless, I hope to see it alive and well for many years to come.

I think we all know tough times are ahead. The economy is headed for a plummet, and with a new release scheduled this year Toady may well recieve a small explosion of donations, but the road towards releases is a long one, and community enthusiasm wanes with each month. There may well be a time when Toady cannot conceviably function as a full-time programmer with the funds he will be recieving, and with the pressing concern towards my primary source of entertainement, coupled with adolecent brain chemicals has moved me to do something large and silly.

I have recently filled in an application for my first job, part time and petty, obviously. Now as I do not need to pay to eat or sleep, most of the money I will be getting will be forwarded to my bank account for future supporting of myself. However, I will set aside a sizable percentage of the bounty towards a Toady Emergency Fund, a culluminative effort that will be dumped upon Toady once he makes the announcement that he needs our help now more than ever. Eventually of course I will be thrust kicking and screaming into the world and will instead have to direct my income towards nourishement and such mortal needs. But the Toady Emergency Fund will continue all the while. It will be his Last Resort, his Light of Earendil, his Save Checkpoint.

There is also a possibility that I will tire of this kind of charity and spend the entire fund on donuts, but it builds character in the meantime.

DF Bug Reports / Soldiers not attacking hostile bat
« on: January 10, 2009, 03:18:53 am »
When I first hear the message that a Giant Bat had interrupted my jewel cutter, I wasn't especially worried. My wrestling squad of seven will stop him!

Once they got to their assigned station next to the bat, it pounced on one, tearing him to ribbons, while his buddies just stood and watched.

This happened for around three times in a row before I save scummed because I sure as hell am not conceeding my milita to a bug.

I tried scattering the squad into seven individual ones, and reforming them, neither of which worked. In all instances all of them had "Harrass wild animals" and "Attack enemies" on.

I live in a mountain fortress with a chasm somewhere around the middle, which means that it is populated by Giant Bats. Every so often a lone hunter will get torn to shreds, or a peasant hauling vital ore will incur their wrath. Even my militia cannot stand before them. Is there any possible Fuck The World mechanism I could use to eliminate these foul creatures?

DF Gameplay Questions / Making Baron Arrive
« on: January 08, 2009, 08:36:32 am »
It might come as a shock to many of you that I'm actually trying to attract nobility. Never the less, I seem to be having difficulty making the baron and his troupe arrive to my mountain fort.

-I've gotten over 100 dwarves

-Last year I completed 25 craft jobs, 10 gem jobs, 25 carpenting jobs, and 25 masonry jobs

It is now the first migrant wave of the new year, and I now have a useless philosopher, but no baron. What am I doing wrong?

DF Suggestions / Creatures as part of environment
« on: December 08, 2008, 07:29:18 pm »
I'm not sure how well this would go down as far as gameplay is concerned, or how much potential the idea has in the first place, but I think it would be a cool idea at least if there were creatures that had some kind of tag to make them part of the terrain itself.

Something like a big maw (think Sarlaac) in the middle of a field that snatches things with its tentacles or something before devouring them.

I understand that this would require multi-tiled creatures, and that it wouldn't have a great deal of modding potential, but I still think the idea could be experimented with at least.

DF Bug Reports / Gang-bashed by everyone in vicinity (adventure mode)
« on: December 03, 2008, 06:03:22 am »
So I was just done reporting my defeat of a Titan to some druid, and getting another quest to kill a dragon for him.

After walking one tile away, the Druid plus all four of my folk who were all skilled in some weapon or other started talking crap to me and began to assault me.

I was raped by my own recruits for no reason at all.

I believe this warrants save scumming. Yes.

DF Modding / What in the metal/stone raws determines avaliability
« on: December 02, 2008, 06:29:09 am »
For instance, Steel ore is never ever ever found in the ground, whilst tin ore is found far more often than much else, and there's nothing I can see in the raws that makes the two inherently different. Is it because Steel is classified as a reaction in another raw file?

DF Gameplay Questions / How does one find kobold caves?
« on: December 01, 2008, 03:39:34 pm »
See, in the world I've generated, I want to find a dagger just so that I can, y'know, use a dagger.

My first thought was to get a thief from a gobbo civ, but after interviewing what seems like hundreds of goblin assimilated across the land, none of them are theives, and therefor don't have daggers.

So I think to myself, kobolds all have knives, don't they? I'll find a kobold cave and have as many daggers as there are kobolds!

Only, I can't actually find any kobold caves. How does one go about this?

DF Gameplay Questions / Why do Bronzies die so early in Legends?
« on: November 29, 2008, 02:16:48 am »
Dragons and stuff tend to live around 150 years, but Colossus and Titans live for maybe 50 before being struck down. Why is this?

DF General Discussion / Tell us about the music, Toady
« on: November 16, 2008, 07:40:17 am »
How long did it take to compose? Were there some other pieces you were thinking of putting in there? Do you write down the sheet music at any point? I'm sure everyone wants to know!

Well

I want to know...

DF Modding / How do new civilizations behave (adventure mode)
« on: November 15, 2008, 07:20:01 am »
Hey, I was just wondering what modded-in civilization settlements look like in adventure mode. Are they a replication of human ones with the appropriate shops or something?

And might this change with the overhauling update?
