DF Bug Reports / [40d11] alt tabbing and harvesting

so i pulled it out and gave it a try..
only things I'm noticing are problems with alt tabbing and harvesting.

Some times when i alt tab to something, and tab back, it no longer takes any input from my keyboard.. I have to tab to something under it, than back up before it will take input again.

also, cant turn the harvesting job off. I'm tired of my miners stopping to harvest plump helmets every 2 digs :P seriously, this is why i have a farmer.... who is idling.

Well was just thinking about it..

Why not have rain 'flow' to the lowest point. every drop that lands, becomes a 1/7 puddle of water.. and flows down hill. (something to designate which is up hill which is down hill.. such as one side having a cliff up, the otherside having a cliff down) and it always flows towards the nearest 'down' point..

what might just happen with this.. can have floods.. real floods.. not just rivers swelling, but the rain pooling at low points.. drowning dwarves :P and have to build dikes to hold it back..pumps to keep your fortress dry...

this isnt so much a bug as a 'feature' if there is a free bag anywhere.. a random dwarf will put a seed in it (one seed, might later have 2.)

I'm trying to curb this.. by putting one bag for every seed type, and dumping these bags without barrels in a stockpile.. of course.. one little mistake, the bags go in a barrel.. and then multiple bags start building up again.. being thrown in that barrel instead of just in bags.. and you CANT no matter what, get the bags out of that barrel.

so all my extra bags, right now, are forbidden (since one bag of seeds got placed in a random barrel when i was making a new seed stockpile, and it took only 2 seconds before I set it to 0 barrels.. but in that time.. poof)

this really does need to be fixed.. it makes using bags for things other than seeds almost impossible.. such as sand for glass.. or quarry leaves.. and so forth.

DF Suggestions / Standardized Menus

I'm sure some one has mentioned this before.. but really, it would help a hell of alot when starting out.

One of the biggest turnoffs that I have seen for alot of people I've showed the game, how every menu has its own set of commands to scroll select and do whatever. Make a Stand-ard. :P

choose one of them, and reorganize and configure menus so they work all the same.. it wouldnt be so hard to find a standard that could work on all.. such as right/left to move between different levels of menu, up down to choose items within, enter to toggle, -/+ to decrese and increase amounts, pgup/pgdown to rapidly scroll through menus

I'm thinking specifically of menus like the stockpile configure menu and what not. -shudder-

Alright, so, I get this farming thing, i do alright at it.. but the fertilizer thing has me baffled..

every single farm ive made in dwarf fortress has always had a fertility of 0/1

this means nothing to me :P and there is no explination.. and i can never seem to fertilize the plot..

DF Bug Reports / Stockpiles and Prepared Food Barrels

Well, I was trying to find a way to reserve some barrels for my brewing.. I was making a few hundred piles of prepared food to sell in summer... (it was spring) and so I designated a single stockpile for booze only.. set it to full barrels.. and it filled.. then dwarves kept putting prepared food in those barrels in the wrong stockpile..

yet there was a perfectly good stockpile right next door for all my other plant foods.. and another one further off for meat foods..

is there any way to reserve a barrel? I dont want ANYTHING going in it except booze (ive run out of booze twice this way.. and I hate selling my rare barrels along with my prepared food! im on a desert map... no trees, only imported wood and a few copper barrels.)

well.. I designated a dump point... then designated a whole pile of stone to be dumped as well as a few other objects... then 2 years later.. none of it had been dumped... another season.. a narrow sock was dumped.. i had the stone scheduled to be dumped from the moment after unloading it all! so i gave up, and instead forbid it for use except the one or two stones i wanted used at the time.

(aquifer map with no stone to be found at first)

this was included even after i had 70 dwarves.. still no one would dump the items.. except that single narrow sock.

I have been digging a deep area... below the water table (but there is no aquafer...) and my area keeps flooding for no appearant reason.. i dig for a while.. go to do something else.. then all of a sudden "cancels dig due to dangerous terrain." and i look back.. its full of 7 deep water... i dont know where this water is coming from... I wasnt meeting wet walls.. i didnt break in to the river.. nor in to my well to the side... 2 squares away..

ah scrap that.. >.> seems i accidentally dug a stair downwards.. in to the water of a larger area of my well below... j is so close to d.. isnt it >.>

DF Bug Reports / Artifact failures.

not exactly a bug, but.. just something defenately wrong with the random generations of artifacts.

Well.. this latest game here i got the best map ive ever been on.. magma.. adamantium, river, plenty of trees, more ore than i could shake a stick at.. alot of sedimentary rock and every other rock type.. both igneous and metamorphic..

so I carve my home out of chalk (something seems so very wrong with that, but whatever... all my chalk doors and chalk chairs chalk tables...)
then I get two strange moods.. first is a fey mood, and she runs off to the leatherworks and makes a shield.. encrusted with the lowest grade coal and agate... then with menacing spikes of muskox leather... >.> coal... and muskox leather..
i think a few more variables need to be added here :P there is just something wrong there.

the next guy is my mechanic.. runs off posessed and has me slaughter a horse real quick for some leather.. (id just gotten finished making some quivers, backpacks, and water skins)

im all excited.. oh whats he going to make?.. pity he wont be legendary... and then he makes it.. Tada! more chalk.... a chalk mechanism that is worth 10,800P... something is so very completely wrong with that.. a chalk mechanism lined with horse leather... its a gear... an artifact.. thats a gear....

DF Suggestions / Always Water

Water is an iffy one. The way I see it, there should ALWAYS be atleast one infinite source of water on every fortress.. weather its fixing the ponds so they replenish.. or an aquifer.. underground river.. river.. brook.. something!

and I mean, like a check when you embark, that looks at your selected area, and if it finds no renewable sources of water, it arbitrarily adds one.. (if aquifer, only a small one to one side or something)

I made a fortress the other day, that dehydrated completely... didnt have any water what so ever after the ponds dried up.. was foolish of me.. :P but yeh.. booze doesnt always cut it..

well.. if the forum has this, I havnt found it yet :P most forums I use, have something like "show all your posts" or "show most recent replies to your posts" and what not..
so i can at a glance, see if anyone has replied to anything ive said.. less likely for conversations to get lost after they leave the first page.

of course, I know how much hell it is to do a forum :P i ran one for a while, complex little programs they are.
