Life Advice / Need Help Recording an Old Fullscreen game in OBS
« on: November 30, 2021, 03:51:16 pm »
Hi. So, I recently bought several old computer games on GOG.com. They run on my computer. But the point is I wanted to record by playthrough of them. But the first one I tried is a fullscreen game, no window option, and I can't figure out how to record it properly inn OBS. I'm using Display Capture, but when I do that, the actual game is shrunk down and the rest of the space in the video is black screen. I tried reducing the base resolution to 1280x720, and that helped a little, but there's still a lo of black space, and reducing the resolution further made it so much worse.

I KNOW it can be recorded. I've seen other people do it. I just don't know how. Perhaps I need another program other than OBS? The game in question is Sherlock Holmes: Secret of the Silver Earring. I've seen people do let's plays and walkthroughs for this game without any black space on their videos.

Please, can somebody help me figure this out?

Hey, everyone. So, I'm working on a story at the moment. Not one I can share. Thing is, one of the characters is a lawyer. I'm not, and while I have tried to do research, there are still certain things about the job that I'm unsure about. The law aspect of the story may not be the central part of the narrative, but messing up on little things like that bugs me.

So, are there any lawyers on the forum who would be willing to answer a few questions and help me in my research? We'd be talking in PMs. I know it's kind of an odd thing to post, but I couldn't find any other place to ask, and I figured I might as well have a go here.

Life Advice / How to fix a write locked USB
« on: December 25, 2020, 07:50:57 pm »
A friend of mine is having trouble with a USB drive that has suddenly become "write locked". Very annoying. Does anyone have any idea how to fix that? I tried to use the basic search engine and got a result about a software tool to use, but I have no idea if it was legitimate.

Life Advice / Elgato Capture Card and OBS problems, please help!
« on: May 06, 2020, 10:22:27 am »
Hi, guys. I have a rather large problem at the moment, and I'd really like your help. I recently decided to do an LP of Persona 5: Royal. Or at least, I'm TRYING to do one. Nothing's been posted yet due to persistent technical issues involving my Elgato capture card and OBS.

I didn't know that the Elgato doesn't cooperate well with OBS. I just knew that an LPer I watched managed to get it to work. Since I first started using the Elgato, I have encountered the same problem, and by now, I'm more inclined to throw it away and get a new capture card to avoid this nonsense. In fact, I did order one, but it won't arrive for two weeks. So I thought I'd ask here for advice to see if it's possible to fix this, or maybe pinpoint the problem more exactly, because I just don't get it.

I'll go over everything in as much detail as possible, because I don't know what's relevant.

I've mostly been recording in a small office room. I have a small TV on a table, the PS4 in front of it, and my microphone, a Fifine model (for reference: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XCKGLTP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) in front of that. When I first recorded, I found audio issues. For one, I had faint audio repetition, as in, I heard the game sounds twice, once faintly, and then a second or two later, the full volume game audio. So it was like:

Stop, Joker!... Stop, Joker!

This became particularly noticeable during Kasumi's introductory cutscene, if you know the game. Furthermore, while the faint audio was in sync with what was going on in the game, the full volume audio was not.

Now, I presumed that the faint audio was just the TV being picked up by my microphone. I'm still inclined to think that, but now I'm not 100% sure. I tried putting the microphone further away by having it on my lap, putting a good little bit of distance between myself and the TV, and also turning the TV volume down to 6. One of my tests seemed to have fixed the faint audio, but the desynced game audio remained.

I tried recording in a larger, more open room. That didn't work. Based on some advice, I tried working with Sync Offset under the Edit -> Advanced Audio Settings. I set Audio Offset for Persona 5: Royal to 2000 ms, but that didn't change anything. Then I tried the other direction, going for -199 ms, because that was as far back on the negative I could go. That didn't work. Based on some other advice, I also changed the sample rate for OBS to 48 kHz, to match the Elgato.

I did a test with just the sample rate change, no change. I did another test with the sample rate change, and Sync Offset for P5R set to -199 ms. That seemed to fix the problem. I heard no double audio in Kasumi's introductory scene, and no desynced audio, either.

But then I tried recording yesterday, and the only difference from the day I tested and my recording yesterday was that the TV volume was up a couple points, and yet... the problem came back.

I'm totally at a loss, guys. Is there a way to for sure fix this nonsense? Is that faint audio I'm getting really being picked up by my microphone? I don't know. If it also helps, in Advanced Audio Properties, Desktop Audio, Mic/Aux, and Persona 5: Royal have all six track check boxes checked. I tired messing with that once, I forget the result. I don't know if that's a factor.

Please, can anybody help me untangle this? I really need help.

EDIT 12/25/20: I forgot I wrote this. But a while back, I managed to fix the problem with an obscure sound setting. Just letting everybody know.

Life Advice / Questions about changing my computer's clock
« on: April 19, 2020, 02:11:05 pm »
So... I'm doing an LP of a game. EBF5. Fun game. But that's not the point. The point is that, as part of the game, there are five seasonal quests that pop up at different times of year. Now, there are two that won't come around for a long time, Halloween and Christmas. However, you can trick the system by changing your computer's clock to the appropriate date.

It's a simple fix if I want to include all the quests in my LP. But I've been hesitant to do it because I'm worried about problems that might crop up if I do that. System updates triggering early, problems with antivirus software, or other unforeseen problems. You know what I mean?

So my question to you guys is this: Have you ever temporarily changed the date settings on your computer's clock like this? Is there anything I should worry about?

Hi, guys! I have another Let's Play project going now, and that is Epic Battle Fantasy 5 Version 2.0. If you haven't heard of it, EBF5 is the final part of a great series of games that transitioned from a side scroller to a proper RPG, and became one of the best games out there, IMO. It's full of fun battles against a wide variety of enemies, and LOTS of humor and game references, not to mention it's very, very, very well built. And it has some fantastic music.

Version 2.0 just came out on Steam yesterday, so I'm checking it out, and if you're interested, you can check it out with me. This new version has three new dungeons, custom game options, cheats and challenges, the ability to save loadouts for each party member, 52 new enemies (many of them sub-bosses), new equipment, new quests, and more.

And if you want a better look at the game, here's the trailer for the original version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkzRbc2VlXY

So... anybody interested?

Life Advice / Citing images for a YouTube video
« on: October 20, 2019, 03:45:46 pm »
So, I'm working on a video other than my LP, and in it, I put in a few images. One was a scan of something I own, but the others are images from Wikipedia. Now I want to make sure I give proper credit to everything, and I see these licenses listed on the pages with the images, but I'm not really sure HOW to cite them. Do I just provide a link to the image in the video credits? Do I do a full research-paper type citation? I can't really think of any examples off the top of my head to compare.

Anybody know?

Hi there, everybody. I've created my own YouTube channel lately, with some technical advice from the people here. Now, I'd like to share my first project, a Let's Play of an old Flash game called Unfairy Tales: Of Slumber and Dreams. It's a terrible, twisted fairy tale RPG I've known about for a long time, and I think it deserves to be looked at and analyzed... and also laughed at.

So join me as I journey though this messed up Land of Dreams filled with evil Pinocchios, Captain Hook, fairy tale characters, and other madness.

(I apologize for how small the game footage is at first. I figured out how to enlarge it properly by now).

Hi everybody. I'm back again, and this time NOT with a technical support problem, thank goodness.

I've been thinking lately about making YouTube videos, maybe discussing some old cartoons I remember watching, maybe a Let's Play of an online game. Of course, in order to do that, I'd need software to record and edit the videos, and I don't know what to use. Someone once said they used Open Broadcaster Software for what they did, but I wanted to ask around anyway.

Let me make a few things clear: My video editing skills are basically non-existent, and I don't think they'll improve dramatically, so I'm not looking to do anything super fancy. I also WON'T be working with video clips, if that makes a difference, first for the reason I just mentioned, and second because I don't want to bother with copyright stuff. If anything, I'd just use still shots when applicable, placed against a generic background, or maybe a background that's also a still shot.

Is Open Broadcaster Software good enough for all of that? Am I being clear enough with what I want? I just wanted to ask you guys before I did anything, just to be sure.

Life Advice / Application blocked from accessing graphics card. Help
« on: February 19, 2019, 04:15:10 pm »
Yeah, more technical trouble. It's clinging to me like a barnacle...

So... my laptop has a little problem. I was in the middle of installing more stuff back on it, I decided to play a game on Firefox. Cursed Treasure 2 on Armor Games, a Flash game. I installed Flash, let it run on the page, and my laptop said the application had been blocked from accessing the graphics card. My other laptop had this same issue, but since I was going to replace it, I never bothered to fix it.

This problem isn't just on Armor Games, though. The last laptop also showed this issue for other Flash games and on other online game sites like Kongregate. Now I looked up what to do about this, and it was suggested to uninstall the graphics driver and re-install it.

This machine has two graphics cards: An Intel UHD 620, and an AMD Radeon 530. I uninstalled each one's driver, one at at time, and re-installed both. I even got technical assistance for the former, since I can't remember the last time I ever done this, if ever. The drivers installed.

And yet, after re-installing both, I still had the same problem. I even tried giving preference to Firefox for the graphics in the settings. But after all that, it's still the same. I even got the same "application has been blocked from access..." message when I was on Steam's website.

I don't get it. Did I do something wrong, and how do I fix this? Any ideas?

Life Advice / Question about Un-partitioning a hard drive
« on: February 15, 2019, 07:40:30 pm »
Hi guys. Yeah, more computer-related things. I ended up getting a new laptop with better components from Amazon. Totally new, factory settings, all of that. But I noticed something odd. The 1TB hard drive was divided in two, a C Drive that was 104 GB and a "D: DATA" drive that was 931 GB. The DATA drive had nothing on it.

This discovery was especially weird for me since, while I've heard of partitioning hard drives, I'd never done it before and I'd certainly never seen a laptop at factory settings come with an already partitioned drive.

I know some people like having a partitioned drive like that, and there are certain advantages to it, but personally, I prefer having the C Drive whole, and not bothering to partition. The split is so wide too. Now I looked online and I found this: https://www.wikihow.com/Unpartition-a-Hard-Drive From the looks of it, I should be able to get rid of the partition.

My question to you guys is: Are there any issues I should look out for? Any potential glitches or anything? Has anybody ever tried this on a laptop that came with a partitioned hard drive right on the factory settings?

I know it may be silly to ask this as I don't see anything that could go wrong, especially when the DATA drive is empty, all 931 GB are free. But I did a factory reset on my other new laptop, followed the instructions I'd found, and somewhere along the way I got a surprise when during the reset process, I got a black screen and it asked me to clear... something, not sure what, and after a while I discovered the thing had glitched so it wasn't able to boot up. I managed to fix it by calling tech support, thankfully.

In light of that, and my recent run of luck with things lately, I wanted to check with you guys about any potential... surprises.

Insight?

Hi guys. A long while back, I wrote a thread on here about needing advice on Windows 10: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=171864.0. I never got to reply back on how that went, but I had meant to, because the new machine was working out just fine. Or at least... it was.

I'm not what I consider a gamer, and I didn't want a gaming laptop specifically, but there were a few games I wanted to play that I couldn't on my old machine, so I was particularly trying to make sure I bought the right processor that could handle them easily. Now the sales rep said the processor could go "up to 3.5 GHz, which was great. Now out of two particularly demanding games, I tried Game A last week and it was a big sluggish, but I blamed that on rustiness or clunkiness on the game's part.

But yesterday I tried game B and it was in slow mo. I closed processes, but no dice. Then I decided on a whim to look at the system properties, and for the processor said "@2.70 GHz  2.90GHz".

Seeing this, I thought I must have been cheated. All the documentation said "up to 3.5 GHz", and then I thought, "wait, is up to code for overclocking speed?" But of course, overclocking is not an especially good thing to do because even if you cool the machine, or so my research has told me, it still stresses the system and can make it wear down faster.

I called Dell, and a manager tired to tell me there was a way to get the processor up to 3.5 without overclocking, that it was indeed made for 3.5, and that the 2.7-2.9 was just what it was running on now or something, that the processor runs slower when it doesn't need to go up to maximum. Something like that. I didn't quite understand it either. But if that's the case, why didn't it adjust to the proper speed before?

The tech support I got transferred to left me on hold for several minutes with white noise, so I hung up. But can anybody tell me, have they heard of anything like what I described about processors or Dell processors? I'm not certain I trust Dell to tell the truth, to be honest, so I want other opinions. Please, guys, I need help here.

Life Advice / I need advice on Windows 10, please help
« on: August 24, 2018, 09:36:42 pm »
Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum. I have a laptop right now that runs Windows 7 Professional. It's at least a year or two old, I don't remember, and I know I'm going to need a new machine soon. Mine has little glitches that make me nervous. Of course, I'd have to get Windows 10 (I've never used a Mac, and no offense, but I'd rather stick with what I'm used to, at least to some degree).

Now when it came out, I heard a lot of bad things about Windows 10. Stuff like privacy problems, unexpected or forced restarts, or not being able to find files, or stuff like that. I can't entirely remember all the stuff I read, since it was so long ago.

Anyway, I asked my friend, who has Windows 10. She hasn't had any issues on her end, except for reboots taking longer than they make out to be. But I still wanted a second opinion, since this is a big thing for me. So I asked another friend. He doesn't use 10, but suggested I go here to ask. I've never played Dwarf Fortress (never heard of it either, but I'm not really much of a gamer, so that's no surprise), but he is a fan, and he highly recommended you guys, and really, I didn't know where else to ask.

So, please, can someone tell me what Windows 10 is like now and if there are any problems to look out for or deal with? For all I know, the issues it had before could have been worked out by now or something. Or maybe they haven't.

I know I'll probably have to get a new machine this year. But I want to be prepared.
