DF Bug Reports / [39e] Underground river... on the surface.
« on: July 25, 2008, 07:15:24 pm »
Using a world generated in 39d, then sticking it into 39e, then using the Embark Anywhere and Nanofortress doohickies, I started on a lark on a single mountain square with, according to the embark screen (have the relevant options set to ALWAYS), one end of an underground river.

Imagine my seven dwarves' surprise when their wagon almost ended up inside the "underground" river, which is smack dab on the surface. It's definitely an underground river, too, as it ends abruptly (probably the source point) and holds lizardmen and such.

DF Community Games & Stories / Weird Dwarves. (Community Fortress)
« on: March 11, 2008, 07:57:00 pm »
Umgushkogsak. The Weird Palisade. Populated by equally weird dwarves. Dwarves who, for some reason, DO NOT want to live underground! They want to create an above ground town! Pfaw! Cast 'em out of our mountainhomes!

Here's the plan. I'm going to start an above ground wooden town, each dwarf with their own house, a large palisade, etc. Should be iron and such underground, so there will be mining and steel making as there is also flux. Plenty of wood. A chasm as well, so there should be baddies to defend against, plus "all dwarves underground!" won't work when there's no place underground to hide in, so goblins will be a bit more of a threat...

Right, the seven sun-loving dwarves, all ready to be claimed: (incidentally, how does one export the text of the screens? I'm just copying this stuff by typing it all out again, so no accent marks.)

Unib Nolethnish, female, likes Anhydrite, Nickel Silver, Harlequin opal, amber, scarlet, clouds, coats, cats, two-humped camel cheese and Dwarven beer. She is friendly, unassertive, not a risk taker, aware of her emotions, put off by authority/tradition, guarded in relationships, is modest, and has a sense of duty.
Claimed by Sukasa
The recordkeeper, mechanic, and architect.

Athel "Athel" Thibammosus, female, likes Conglomerate, Fine pewter, Chrysocolla, Oak, Pig tail Fabric, green, cabinets, large gems and chains. She is concerned about ridicule/rejection, is unassertive, cheerful, compassionate, lacks confidence, organized, rules are confining, and strives for excellence.
Claimed by Ed-.
Carpenter, Woodcutter, and sometimes Axedwarf, who hates elves and wants to live in an Oak tower just to spite them.

Stukos Arrosurvad, male, likes Clay, Aluminum, Tsavorite, Mangrove, ivory, Pig tail Fabric, maces, quivers, hatch covers, earrings, chains, donkeys, black bear meat and Dwarven wine. He likes new ideas, is candid/sincere, not moved to pity, and does the first thing he thinks of.
Unclaimed.
The Farmer and cook.

Fath "Slag" odid, male, likes Native silver, Gold, Rhodolite, clear glass, coral, giant toad bones, chain mail, windows, anvils, longnose gars, and Dwarven sugar. He rarely feels discouraged, can handle stress, eager for new experiences, willing to compromise, completely disorganized, and rarely does more work than necessary.
Claimed by AlienChickenPie.
Furnace Operator, Wood Burner, and Armorsmith, who has a puppy, awww.

Rovod Tenshedral, female, likes Quartzite, Nickel silver, Pyrite, hatch covers, goblets, cows, and dwarven milk. She is slow to anger, doesn't handle stress well, enjoys being in crowds, is unassertive, put off by authority/tradition, is trusting, and takes time to make decisions.
Unclaimed.
The plant gatherer and brewer, with a bit of farming.

Bomrek "Sandono" Bablibash, male, likes Quartzite, Bronze, Gray chalcedony, giant rat leather, Pig tail Fabric, crossbows, idols, pixies, Plump Helmets, and Dwarven ale. He is assertive, appreciates art/beauty, candid and sincere, finds helping rewarding, not affected by suffering, is organized, doesn't do more work than necessary, and takes time to make decisions.
Claimed by Sandono
Hunter, marksdwarf, and just a hint of butchery/tanning, as well as professional marmot slayer.

Dakost "Largok" Ibeshrigoth, male, likes Limestone, Steel, Blue diamond, muskox leather, hatch covers, horses, and Dwarven syrup. He is paranoid, not moved to pity, and doesn't do more work than necessary.
Claimed by Splime.
Stonemaster! Also recluse, wanting to live underground, perfectly normal for a dwarf, but not this group.

Name the dwarf you want please, the profession, and what stuff you want your dwarf to bring.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / An epic tale of... ok, just a tale.
« on: April 07, 2008, 11:02:00 pm »
I created an Elven adventurer, no skills in armor but plenty in swordcraft, shieldcraft, and enough in swimcraft to prevent me from drowning immediately should I fall in water. A pocket world, so sure enough, the Elf town I started in was empty. So were the first two human towns I went to, but at them at least I got to switch my wooden sword for an Exceptional bismuth bronze one and to get four iron shields. The next town had people and a mayor, who told me to go and kill a minotaur. Took two drunks with me to that cave, they died in there (naked mole dogs!), but I didn't find the Minotaur.

So, I went to the town just south of the cave. Go to the cave where you killed that named naked mole dog, and kill the Minotaur who lives there! Brought one drunk with me.

No Minotaur. It was a huge and confusing cave system, so I went "Screw it" and slept right at the entrance, hoping for the Minotaur to wander by and attack me. I awoke to, well, there was blood and bits of my drunken friend everywhere, but whatever it was that had slain him had passed right by me. Odd. Searched some more, still no Minotaur.

Bah! This was boring! So I went to another human town. Go kill a giant! Huzzah, a different cave! Went there, slew the giant, carried his corpse back with me. Good job, now, go kill that Minotaur.

Grrr. Another fruitless search for that Minotaur, then I went to yet another town. Kill an Ettin! Ok, did that easily, went back to the mayor, was he going to send me to kill that same gosh darned Minotaur? Nah, nothing bothering them he says. Ok. So I went searching for a Dark Fortress, found one, slaughtered everybody (at least somewhat by throwing giant and ettin corpses at them) except for the Demon, who was nowhere to be found. Alright, went to another Dark Fortress, slaughtered everyone there, including the Demon, who this time showed up, flew above me, rained fireballs down on me, came down to wrestle, got knocked unconcsious and strangled to death. The damage to me? A singed leg. By this point I'm feeling like taking on the world...

Or at least that gosh darned Minotaur!

tl;dr, how do I found quest monster? Really, I need to find him, if only to die at his hands (hooves?)!

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / too many new fortresses...
« on: February 27, 2008, 10:37:00 pm »
Can anyone explain to me the mountainhomes you can visit in adventure mode? Huge expanses of... nothing. Empty rooms galore. In every single one I've visited. What's up with that?

I know that at least one of them has a mayor... because I heard him splattering a naked mole dog. But that was before I was even inside.

Why are they so hard to get to, anyways?

(Clear voice with a hint of naiveity): Dear diary. It is early spring as I write this. A brand new diary too, using one of those fancy Voice Recording Fairies. I have exciting news. Esas! Clearcaves! What a name! Me and some of my buds have decided to leave the mountainhomes and head out to this new fortress, freshly built. We should get there sometime... oh, near the end of autumn, I think. It's rather far away. It sounds exciting! Clearcaves! I wonder if the walls there are all glass?

Dear diary. Mid-summer now. My feet hurt, and I think that the dwarf right behind me steps on my Rope Reed Sandal on purpose...

Dear diary. Early autumn now. Why did nobody tell us that this fortress was on a GLACIER? We should be getting close now!

Dear diary. Mid-autumn. I'm there! Clearcaves! Clear because of the fact that the dwarves already there live in the ice itself. I cannot wait to find out what exciting job they give me, they are all so friendly here! Although, they haven't shown us where the food is yet...

Dear diary. Still Mid-autumn. How boring. I was drafted into the military, along with all of the other immigrants, and ordered to stand on a bridge here. It's a bridge next to the bridge separating the leader's throne room from the rest of the fortress... Does he really need seven of us to guard his throne room?

What was that clicking sound?

Dear diary... I survived... by landing on top of my best friend... His nickname was Lumpy, now he really is lumpy... No food, no water, just this pit... I can see the sky though...

Armok's left big toe! They shut that bridge! Total darkness here!

I wish my arms weren't broken. It is hard to write with one's feet.

Dear diary. Mid-winter. I fear that Clearcaves should be called Cleargraves. I am the only one left alive... the stench... oh Armok the stench...

I want that dwarf's sock, but I can't crawl that far..

Wait! I hear them mining! Right outside this wall! I'm here! I'M HERE!

(Gruff, deep voice): Dear Diary. Haha. Sucker. Shoulda known better than to immigrate to a glacier fortress with almost no food. At least you let us know that the pit needs to be deeper... Tell Armok thank you for the kitten mitten! What was the diary keeper's name again? Eh, I don't remembr. Okay lads, let's start channeling!

(Distant): But I want his sock!

(Gruff voice again): Fine, but make it quick, we got a hole to dig. Strike the Earth!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarves can fly!
« on: February 29, 2008, 08:21:00 pm »
I just had an idea for a rather... inane... fortress idea, one that surely won't be winning any Efficient Fortress of the Year awards.

It all centers on flying dwarves. No, not dwarves modified to be able to fly, I'm talking about dwarves launched via bridge. I'm thinking of having my fortress in an area almost entirely channelled out, with big pillars standing up, one for each dwarf, with a dwarf house and dwarf dining room and dwarf everything. Food and drink stockpiles, workshops for the dwarf assigned to the pillar to use, the whole deal. A small population, with no economy, would be ideal.

The top of the pillars would have the bridges and the very well defined landing zones. If you want a dwarf to go from one pillar to another, tell him to pull the lever, then draft him and stand him on that bridge, inform him to place his head between his legs and kiss his butt goodbye, 'cause he's going flying. Then undraft him when he's on the other pillar. Repeat.

Am I truly insane for this idea, or only just kinda insane?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Huzzah for Ambition!
« on: February 04, 2008, 06:52:00 pm »
So far, I've abandoned every fortress, save one, for stupid mistakes. Then an idea popped up into my head. I immediately generated a new world (don't want to lose that fortress which works!), and nearly immediately found the perfect spot for my idea.

An underwater glass fortress hidden under a terrifying tundra.

This necessitated sand, a terrifying tundra, and an aquifer, which I have found in seed 1237321700. There's a HUGE purple area to the far southeast, and in the Blighted Blizzard of Meanness seven very brave, very idiotic dwarves are going to try to construct the ultimate Adventurer Death Trap, Esmomuz Zasarel Shezrod, Clearcrypt the Crystalline Waters of Crotches.

Wait.

How about Esmomuz Zasarel Disuth, Clearcrypt the Crystalline Waters of Nightmares?

Nah, too contrived.

I got it! Esmomuz Zasarel Anan, Clearcrypt the Crystalline Waters of Night!

Any bets on how long (short) I'm going to last?  :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Channelling under bridges?
« on: February 03, 2008, 05:43:00 pm »
First of all: Salutations! I've been playing Dwarf Fortress, and lurking here, for several weeks, but just now have decided to register and post. I hope that I can add to the discussions here.

However, on to my problem here: It's the third year of so far my only fortress not to be abandoned due to a dumb mistake, and with fourty five dwarves toiling away things are going fine. So I decided that it was about time to build some defences in case of a goblin seige, and so surrounded my entrance with a sizeable wall and decided to build a goblin trap. Instead of lines of weapon traps or cage traps, I wanted to build a trap wherein they'd be funnelled into a corridor entering my fortress, then drawbridges on both ends of the would open up and trap them inside, leaving them to be targets of my marksdwarves protected by fortifications on either side, and if things got out of hand well, I'd have a massive draw bridge already up with which to squish the invaders.
The problem is that I built the bridges already, then realized that I needed to build the channels for the surrounding two bridges to cover normally; however, I can't designate the ground under the bridge (they're drawn) to be channeled, although I can channel other parts of the land.

So my question is, am I going to have to remove the bridges in order to build the channels or is there some other way of doing it? I only have one good mechanical dwarf, and he's normally busy doing other things, so it'd take quite a while to do :/

DF Gameplay Questions / 2D Version...
« on: April 08, 2008, 06:38:00 pm »
I know that this has been said before in these forums, but none of my searches have been fruitful, and so I now ask: Which release was the last 2D release? I've only ever played with Z levels, and I'd like to try the olden time type game.
