DF Gameplay Questions / Can't get melt object to work

Came back to DF after a fairly long break...downloaded newest version, everything seems fine. Training up my metalsmith, I want to melt all the crap he has made. Designated 100 steel short swords to be melted down, have plenty of charcoal, but game insists it "needs melt designated item".

When I look in the stocks menu, or at the object on the map, it displays as being (M)elt designated, so I don't understand the issue. Did something change?

DF Gameplay Questions / What is the best way to move ore to the surface

As the title said...what is the fastest/most efficient way to move ore or other materials from deep in the ground to the surface or near surface?

I've been playing with mine carts, and although I can't make them work the way I want, I also feel that by the time I get a system designed that runs deep enough to be of any use, my dorfs could have just hauled the stuff by hand. And frankly I don't want to take the time designating out a minecart elevator.

So what am I missing here?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves won't recover wounded

Hey guys...for some reason my dwarves won't recover wounded. Haven't had this problem before so I'm not too sure why they won't do it. I have a hospital with spare beds and so on, but they just refuse to go out and get the poor bastard.

Any ideas

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / combat bug?

I've been noticing a recurring theme in a number of battles I have had so far: soldier focusing on the head, and repeatedly getting deflected by whatever the foe is wearing. This might sound reasonable...but it seems to be running rampant.

Ive got a number of legendary axe dwarves, and noticed one of them taking forever to kill a goblin swordsman in the last seige. I examined the combat reports, and found that there was three pages of  my axedwarf hacking the gobbo in the head, and bruising the head through the leather hood. The dwarf never struck anywhere except the head, which is good, except that he was not able to do anything except bruise the goblin.

I've seen similar behavior a number of times. Tyipcally, the dwarf incapacitates the goblin, the goblin falls unconcious or is stunned, and the dwarf begins beating away at the goblin head, never leaving a scratch. I have not yet seen the dwarf then manage to kill the goblin, instead the goblin has to be killed by another dwarf joining the fight later on.

I once even had a number of low skilled recruits and similar get stuck doing the same thing to a yak (I think). There were literally 3 or 4 dwarves around hacking away at the yak head, with no success.

Anyone noticed something similar?

DF Gameplay Questions / Marksdwarves won't carry bolts consistantly

I've got stacks and stacks of metal, bone, and wood bolts, and bolts enabled on the military screen for any material, training and combat, yet I cannot seem to make my marksdwarves carry them...at least not all the time. Typically out of a squad of 9 dwarves, only one or two actually have any bolts. They all have quivers.

What am I missing here? Ive never encountered this issue before.

I know in the previous versions (quite awhile ago now I guess), only metal bolts were carried in quivers whereas training bolts were carried in hand, but I havent noticed this in the current version.

Any tips?

DF Gameplay Questions / Several military questions

I've started playing again after a break of over a year, and I'm having some military trouble.

First off, the military dwarves seem to spend most of their time watching demonstrations, and none of it sparring. Is there some way to make them work a bit harder? In previous versions I know that they wouldn't spar if they had nerve damage, but I can't make them spar regardless.

Secondly, I'm having more problems with negative thoughts about long patrol duty, which I had little issue with in the past. There seems to be an elaborate schedule tool in the game now, but I can't figure out how to use it. Ideally, I would have my dwarves train for 3 months, go inactive for a few months, and then train again (Obviously, I can do this manually but it is tedious).

Thirdly, marksdwarves seem to very rarely do any target practice, and spend their time watching demonstrations as well.

Any help/thoughts?

Whats going on here? goblins and elves dont seem to rot down to bones, instead my refuse piles are clogged up with bodies. Is this typical these days? If so, is there no way for me my poor dwarves to decorate things with elf bone?

Back in the day there was a way to turn off ambushes (or at least one way or another I made it so that I didn't get ambushes). I just started playing again and cannot remember how I did it...someone help?

there is a  topic here http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=32682.0 that shows a nice world, and gives the worlgen info.

what do i do with this in order to gen that world? i tried entering the seeds but that didnt get me the world.

looked through the wiki and searched on here but didnt find anything quite right...

DF Bug Reports / [40d] doors dont fall in collapse

i just collapsed a section of aqueduct, which had an access door in it. There was an identical aqueduct below it, which was collapsed as well (no door in the lower one tho).

anyways, it all collapsed perfectly except for the door, which remains "built" in the same place it was before. there is nothing constructed around it, it is simply hanging.

i have 50 or so dwarves, magma, and orcs. the result is a current supply of 1800 iron bars, and i ran out of coal years ago, so no more steel. except for the coal i can extract from traders.

So, i need a sweet project to build entirely out of iron. i currently have an obsidian obilisk, and have started construction of an obsidian pyrimid, 17 levels high, which will be hollowed out to make a temploe to armok (obviously).


but what should i make out of iron?

DF Gameplay Questions / Any good way to collapse large areas?

i am working on an internal cistern type thingamajig. I dunno what i will use it for yet but that really isnt the point.

To try and make this go faster, i dug out each level, and then channeled the outside of the top level, so that it collapsed. Unfortunately, i collapsed it in sections, and so far have killed my three miners (including the mayor) and one peasant-turned-miner.

So...is there a way to collapse things that wont end up with a dwarf falling 10 levels and crashing through..9 floors? and spreading dwarf chunks all over so that my dwarves spend the next half an hour cleaning him up ;s

Animal trainer got a strange mood, and wouldnt choose a workshop. I used dwarf companion, it said that he wanted a glass furnace. I had a magma glass furnace. I then built a regular glass furnace, which he used.

Incidentally, i had no fuel for the regular furnace, but he still used it to successfully make some sort of idol.
