DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Finding Mountain Halls Without Cheating
« on: September 28, 2014, 08:00:07 am »
Okay, so in the course of my new adventures I have found myself wandering underground. I have run into "Farm Roads" in underground caverns, which is 5 tile wide paths that are roughly around a Mountain Hall. The problem is, I haven't found any door hatch or stairway up or down in these farm road paths leading to a hall. How would one usually find the hall without cheating?

General Discussion / Should the US boycott speeches given on an international scale?
« on: September 26, 2012, 08:29:26 pm »
So, the USA has boycotted the Iranian speech. Leaving aside the question if it serves any purpose at all, the question is should US political leaders ever boycott an international discourse that consists only of speaking?
The United States of America holds freedom of speech as one of it's ideals. This allows someone to theoretically make a real bigoted video and post it online where millions can be insulted by it and count on suffering no real legal concequences for it.
So do USA elected officials, who are supposed to represent the people and the principles of free speech, really have any right to boycott hateful speech on a international level because they don't like it? Discuss.

DF General Discussion / Hill Dwarf Village, what do you think it would look like?
« on: September 10, 2012, 07:45:47 am »
We know Toady will do something we can't even anticipate like making it out of boogyman dust, but what do you think a hill dwarf village would look like?
A small structure on the surface over a ramp, that leads down to a bunch of little 1-3 tile squares around a central space (meeting room), with several paths to a bunch of rough rooms for underground
farms.
I think there'd be several of these "burrow meeting rooms", seperated by family. There'd also be some market burrows, with larger rooms for the shop than in family burrows. Warehouses would be like the farms that stretch out of family farmimg burrows.
For serious urban areas, farming spread would reduce. There would be a network of tunnels connecting these burrows together, though each would have a surface connection. They would only very rarely connect to deeper levels, although that chance would increase based on site population, and generally be from one of the farming burrows. If it exists it'd be a determined downward staircase or ladder.
There'd probably be random low-quality engravings throughout the structure, and rock doors on rooms and such. There might be a statue or two in the meeting room. Occasionally a "farm" or warehouse room would be a religious shrine instead, with higher quality religious orientated engravings and religious statues. There'd be occasional actual dwarf Temples sometimes in the hilldwarf areas, but that is seperate from shrines, and have it's own unique architectural style. All the walls would be smoothed.
What do you all think? Would this be something you'd expect to see adventuring through a dorf village? What is your vision of this?

General Discussion / Israel for Americans
« on: August 02, 2012, 09:33:22 am »
The propaganda machine has been spouting off since Romney declaredc he'd visit Israel about how pro-Israel each politician is. They cynically explain that this action has no bad concequences because there is no significant voter base that disagrees with a Pro-Israel statement.
So... Battlefield state americans... Do you disagree with this? Is their pro israel stance a good idea?
Try to avoid flames or religion. This is about the nation, not the people.
I'll start. My home is Colorado Springs. It has a high concentration of evangelicals. Most people there disagree with me when I call Israel another theocratic rogue state in the middle east. Net, I'd say it's a good bet to make in Colorado Springs. There a few of us, mostly athiest, who think that way though.

General Discussion / Romney should step aside.
« on: July 16, 2012, 11:56:55 am »
The republican canadate isn't official yet. They still have time to change. Romney isn't just representing corporate interests, he is them personified. He can not only not win, but he's going to give Obama a huge victory. Obama can't even solidly beat a Texas felon in West Virginia. Any other canadate would be blowing by Obama by now. Romney can't even go neck and neck. If he stepped down it'd give the GOP a shot, but Romney is too determined to get whatever the hell he is after.
Still. He should step down.

General Discussion / Manning 2012
« on: July 15, 2012, 03:28:16 pm »
Keith Judd gained 41 % of the democratic primary in west virginia despite being a texan. Oh, and a felon.
What does this mean? It means Manning's presidential campaign is picking up some credibility. There is already a facebook site devoted to it. While I haven't looked at it and do not plan to, I'm sure it's excellent.
"Wait!" You say. "Manning is too young to be eligable to run!"
While I am sure this is true normally, the truth is that this only applies when considering normal human years. Manning fully meets the age requirements when you simply calculate his age in dog years.
So, jump on the bandwagon. Manning for President! A traitor you can trust!

Life Advice / Vindicitive ex wife denying access to my son to her dad, any ideas?
« on: June 26, 2012, 06:27:11 pm »
Alright, so my Ex wife divorced me and is keeping me from my son in a pretty significant way. He's pretty emotionally damaged from what she has done so far, but at least I've had some success. However, I have a place where I have had none. He is being denied access to his Family.
Her dad spoke on my behalf, and so she carried through with a threat to never let him see my son.
Here's an E-mail exchange she had with him just recently:
Any thoughts on how to protect his Family access? I live in Colorado.

I would like at some time to spend some time with -Son's name, Misspelled-. Although, frankly I don't with to deal with you. I would like to spend some time with him.

I find your behavior to be repugnant. I have shared with you that I am not going to be held hostage by your whims to spend time with -Son's Name, Misspelled-. I guess we need to go to court.

You told me that if I did not support you that, "You would make sure that I would never see -Son's name Misspelled- again." That you tried to coerce or extort me, tells me a lot about how you think of me. That you are carrying this out is even more egregious. It is obvious you do not care for for me or my sensabilities for doing and saying such a thing. What would you think of me if I caved in to your coercion? What must you think of me for doing and saying such a thing? I believe that this issue shows you for what you are and I desire none of it. Therefore, Court may be the only answer. Finally, I would point out that there were no problems with me having -Ex Wife's First Child whom is Deceased First name- for multiple times as much as a month at a time.

I am not interested in anything that you have to say regaurding visiting -Son's Name, Spelled right- (-reinforcing proper spelling-). It is very typical of you to get your facts incorrect. I said, "You can either have an ex son-in-law or you can have your daughter and grandson." You made your choice, now live with it!

General Discussion / Nobamney?
« on: June 17, 2012, 05:28:02 pm »
I talk to tons of people every day, sometimes my discussion gets political. I hear a lot of people say they are not voting because they don't like the choices they have. Of the people who say they are voting, I hear three things.
"I'm voting for Romney because I don't want Obama to be elected again."
"I'm voting for Obama because I really don't want Romney."
"I'm voting for Ron Paul!"
Paul's fanatics aside, There is a pretty common theme. The theme of not picking someone to vote for, but vote against.
What kind of election system is that? Are my results wrong? Are there really nobody who wants to vote for their president on his own merits? Maybe someone who has a Third party choice?
So, here's a poll to see where this community is. Change your vote as you want as time goes on. This discussion is about voting against candidates by picking the other candidate, and to see if there's any portion that it is more true for one candidate over the other. This discussion is NOT about any policies of individual candidates or if one is more worthy of the presidency than another. We all know, after all, that the only person worthy of the presidency is me, and I'm not running this year out of respect for all the bacteria lost at sea.
If you don't like the results, remember that lots of people like to cast funny votes and don't accurately represent how they really feel. So yea, entertainment value and all that.

General Discussion / Great Depression/Recession Comparisons
« on: November 16, 2011, 10:00:08 am »
So I was in the supermarket talking to my brother last night, and it got me thinking... The core of what the "Great Depression" and why we aren't in one is because there are no Bread Lines. Those breadlines came from unavailability of food for the majority of people though. The Dust Bowl and the lack of Food Stamps.
Today we don't have a major drought in our breadbasket, and we have economic assistance for eating. This takes a lot of the great urgency off of the situation.
What I'm curious about is, is this really worse than the Great Depression when you take away the effects of the Drought on the American Economy? How bad would it be if we had wide-scale crop failure?

Life Advice / Statement for a Dispute to a Debt
« on: November 15, 2011, 07:13:27 pm »
In the mail my sister just got a letter from our local state debt collector.
In it, it states she owes over a thousand dollars for attending Pikes Peak Community College.
She was current with her account when she left in fall of 2002. Yep. OVER EIGHT YEARS AGO.
They intend to garnish her tax return this year as a result. She tasked me to write up an official reply to them. Here's what I got.
We figure we'll be sending it out in the end of the week.
I personally got one of these too, and I -thought- I paid it off, but I didn't remember for sure and mine was delivered in 2009 for 2006. I just let it go. I'm starting to regret it now. I think that they might have some error in their system that has resulted in them overcharging an extra semester or something.
So anyway, any improvements anyone can think of to this letter? Making it more professional and stuff? I also wonder, if it's owed to a college but wasn't from an official student loan, doesn't it also pass the statute of limitations even though it doesn't apply to student loans? They allege she made a payment she never made, so it's all wonky and it wouldn't apply, but it might be a further argument I should include.

Quote from: Revised from Bucket's Suggestions
I have not received any communication from Pikes Peak Community college since the date of my last attendance, and my current address was my address of record at the time of my last attendance. There was no outstanding balance after the date of my last attendance. Pikes Peak Community College is alleging that a payment was made on their alleged debt. No such payment was made, because no such debt exists. I request a copy of their alleged debt, plus a record of any and all attempts you have made to investigate their claims prior to attempting to take action against me.
I expect a response within 30 days of receipt of this letter.
Thank you.

General Discussion / Iran and Nuclear Warheads
« on: November 10, 2011, 02:46:58 pm »
All of the sudden Iran has been getting a lot of news with the dire warning about the development of nukes. Well that's really not new news. They've been ignoring UN nuclear agreements and telling inspectors where to stick it since the 1990s. Really what is new is that Israel made their usual saber rattling bullshit about how they plan to increase strife in the area to prevent Iran from having nukes, and then there comes out some paper saying they are 3 years at most from developing one.
Now this says to me that we either invade them, or we live with them having nukes.
So, I know we are all afraid of terrorists detonating nukes, but here's my question...
What do we really have to be afraid of, and is it worth a war?
Iran's leadership may rattle their sabers and help out organizations that are terroristic, but they have to know there would be nuclear retaliation in the event they ever actually launched a nuclear-armed missile. Their leadership is very unlikely to survive, so our nuclear deterrent works there. Those same leaders also have to know that if they sell the nukes to terrorists, the source of the bomb can be found and again, no more leadership. As such, they have pretty strong incentive for holding on to their nukes and not using them or giving them away.
So why do we care if Iran gets nukes? Why would it be worth starting a total war in the region? Is there other options given the personalities involved?
North Korea has nukes, we haven't seen them using them.

Life Advice / Programming Issue
« on: October 10, 2011, 08:28:57 pm »
I'm playing around with haXe and flash in Flash Develop.
I'm trying to learn variables and random generators.
I'm running into an odd situation...
Output "0.07200000000000001" for Food Check Drop, 0.03 for Food Check Percentage, and 0.042 for Food Check base.
Now to say I don't know where it came from is a understatement. It seems to work normally most of the time. What did I do wrong? Any idea?
The point of doing this is to create a percentage to work with that operates to 6 digits. (xx.xxxx)
This gives me lots of leeway to create a system that is affected by many different small details and check against percentage-based pass/fail checks. While most parts I created of that system tested independently worked fine, This part had such an odd output number that I think something I'm doing is fundamentally wrong.
I ran multiple tests when I discovered this, and it outputted similar results sometimes.
Sometimes it works fine. Here's a few examples of what it spat out when it didn't:
So yea, I'm pretty darn confused!

Forum Games and Roleplaying / The Tribe Game (Year 2)
« on: September 09, 2011, 11:59:13 am »
I figure I'll start a forum roleplaying thingie. So here's my commitment. I'll be generating maps down to the village level using HexMapper. I'll also post turn summaries at least once a week. If a situation warrants quicker posts, then I'll do that.
I have a few ideas of a base system, but I'll be fleshing out the game mechanics as things go. We'll see how that works for me.
Anyway, feel free to join at any time. Give a quick blurb about your character. Check out the example if you don't know what to do.
You are a member of a tribe filling a role in the tribe. The tribe doesn't have to be the same tribe as everyone else, and the role can be anything from chieftain to, well any other role that a tribe would need. The technology will be Pre-colombian America. No steel or guns, but go ahead and be inventive in wood, bone, or stone. If you think I will think it's iffy, show research documenting pre-colombia America existence.
If you are also establishing a tribe for you to be in, please describe the tribe. Here's an example below.
