I follow CES, and as soon as I saw this I knew that one day we shall all be free of FPS limits (and on tablets to boot!)

touch might be difficult to use but a bluetooth keyboard and mouse would fix everything :D

DF General Discussion / Fun With Towers and Fractals *New Polystar Designs*
« on: November 25, 2011, 02:32:24 am »
Having recently recaught the dwarf fortress design bug, I was again messing around with fractal designs and the holy grail of fractal bedroom design, the raynard fractal. Studying on wikipedia I found that the raynard fractal was probably based of some sort of Vicsek snowflake (see: this). I decided I wanted a tall square tower, that was fractal and square. Neither Vicsek or raynard allowed such goals. So I decided to alter the Menger Sponge and Sierpinski carpet to fill my needs (<-- redundant statement is redundant and not an expression of hubris [from wikipedia information overload] I swear :) )

This is what I got

Incredibly space inefficient, path finds like a blind man whose just had his eardrums popped, and completely unoptimized (which I will change I promise ;))
It also looks like mana from heaven tastes.

Things todo: shrink main corridor sizes and give cross corridor to all sectors, do SOMETHING with that HUGE empty space, count how many rooms there are; doors required; and maximum/mean walking distances. All for tomorrow.

Also, shrink it... just a bit :P, and make a wall contruction version.

Version 2: Now with more border!

This way you can easily make use of the empty spaces, invert the image for a construction diagram instead of a dig diagram, or delete the undesignated portions for a clean and inneficient design. Your choice!

Version 2S: What is this, Apple?

Smaller so that realistic dwarves can dig this thing out. Due to the nature of the fractal, sizes are in powers of 3 making this size 81x81. A total of 44 bedrooms are made per floor. However 40 more can be added by joining the inside portions, and another 1 large room is available around the edge if you designate this instead of build it.

Octopod Series
Working file - The file I used to plan, design, and measure out the workings. Colors are wrong and base units are included for reference

Open Rooms - These pods have walls too thin to make proper room designations. Use for stockpiles, barraks, hospitals, other loose designations.

Bedrooms - These were designed as bedrooms. Maximum space with minimal construction, shared doors and spare rooms in center lobby. NOT CONNECTED. These pods require access to eachother through the lobby level, for security reasons.

Lobby - Open areas, minimal walls, and plenty of space to enable security and freedom of design.

Jacobian Zipper

104 rooms, door inefficient, pathing is simple however. Up/down staircase in centre and corners, statues/falls in spare 3x3s.

Larger (not for designation) size for viewing:

PolyStar Bedroom Series:

Each unit is a circle hallway with 12-3 3x3 bedrooms contained therein. Each polystar bedroom pattern is made from 12-3 bedroom units of corresponding bedroom numbers. Pathing will be long, unless you place one polystar bedroom pattern in another to get a central hallway.

One confirmed combination is the 8 polystar placed inside the 12 polystar.

DF Suggestions / Stop the auto-pause!
« on: September 28, 2011, 07:52:07 pm »
I spend an awful, and I mean AWFUL, amount of time in Dwarf Fortress designating my fort's layout. This is not a problem for me, because I like to see the fort going up piece by piece. My problem is that when I'm designating my fortress pauses and I don't want it to. If it didn't pause, then the dwarves could work and continue to grow the fort. Instead, after a day spent pressing arrow keys and enter, I only have those lovely brown rectangles to show for a good days work. Can we (I) please have an auto-pause disable option in the INIT?

DF Gameplay Questions / Help! My dwarves refuse to cut trees!
« on: August 30, 2010, 01:17:35 pm »
I have the lazy newb pack 4.1, and have used several utilities, such as dwarf foreman (but no hacky utilities mind you). When designating trees to be cut down, the brown square shows up saying they designated, but no one come out to cut them. I have several dwarves with woodcutting enabled and several axes. None of the axes are being equipped. I can't seem to find the problem!

DF Suggestions / Eye Candy on the Embark Screen
« on: August 27, 2010, 03:59:25 pm »
Now, before anyone goes and flames me for wanting better graphics over better features, please read the post!

I was reading on the development page about new things happening and Toady posted this picture:

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/imgs/farm2.png

Is it not amazing? Does it not look better than the current embark screen? Having 3 levels of detail with points of interest mapped to pixels instead of tiles looks drop dead gorgeous IMHO and should totally be the default. It's unlikely that this would take too long to code and I hope wouldn't be all that difficult. Since Toady made the above reference picture, I'm pretty sure he knows how to make it work for the game. It's an opportunity presented and I think the idea lends itself beautifully to the game.

Here is a link to the dev item:

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/index.html

but since it's today's dev item that may not be there for too long now. There is a second smaller world with the same effect too if anyone goes looking

Now that you've read the entire post (and looked at the picture), please feel free to flame me ;D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Anyone want to start a DF record book?
« on: January 28, 2009, 10:45:43 am »
I would have put this in the suggestions thread but it's not really an addition to the game. Basically, why don't we start a book of world records for DF. The records we use don't really need to be in the context of the game but they could be.
ex.
Most valuable artifact (in context)
Largest Siege on record (in context)
Highest FPS recorded (out of context)

This allows for an even larger set of goals for many different people. Architecture lover may want to create the Longest Unbroken Pipe System or Most Volume of a Tower. And since some of the records are based on luck, breaking the records is not limited to crazy DF addicts (ex. Most Moods in 10 years). Of course the Highest FPS record is imposible to break unless your a crazy rich computer builder and have a Core i7 extreme supercooled with liquid helium but it does provide an interesting tid-bit of info for the rest of us ;)

So, to boil it down, would anyone be interested in starting said book?

DF Suggestions / Make blood an object
« on: December 30, 2008, 12:16:32 pm »
Hopefully this can be implemented soon since Toady is already working on wounds and such (or will be soon). I really would like it if blood types could be defined in the raws as materials/objects/creatures. This allows for not only giant cave spider ichor* adorned clothing but also for creatures that bleed children, the only way to truly kill them off is to let them die naturally. It's a small and really overlooked part of the game, you usually simply sit and watch blood fly when you fight monsters but to me I would really like to change this part of the game.

*I don't actually know if giant cave spiders use ichor, I'm on the wrong computer so I can't check the raws to see.

DF Modding / Making rare ore not so
« on: March 05, 2008, 07:20:00 pm »
Just as the topic says, i'm having trouble figuring out how to make ores more common (such as adamantine). I tried making it not [DEEP] and have an enviroment in IGNEOUS_ALL, SEDMENTARY, and METAMORPHIC, as well as changed each type to CLUSTER and the number after to 1000, not 100. But all I get is one large grouping near the bottom and thats it. I was expecting it to be everywhere.
