DF Bug Reports / NEVERMIND: [40d vanilla] Liaison crushed or something
« on: April 08, 2009, 08:44:11 pm »

I received no announcements and did not witness it, but apparently the Hamlet Liaison from the Dwarf Civilization died next to my mayor/trader/mechanic. He still has all his body parts. My mayor was loading a stone trap which is the only thing I suspect would kill him.

The liaison was the only thing harmed at all.

UPDATE:

It just hit me to check the legends.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Sign of goblin demon?

Checking out the civ list, and there's the usual list of goblin names:
Arstruk Gugostozu
Tode Ngebzolasm
Em Zutospkutsmob
...

but at the top of the list, whose only job is 'Ruler', is
Xan

What kind of goblin name is 'Xan'? Is that indeed the name of some monstrous and putrid hellhog older than gods and men who bends the minds of mortals to its profane will?

And will it be coming along for one of the sieges? I'd be excited as hell if it came along for one of the sieges.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Tall winter pond
« on: July 08, 2008, 08:25:23 pm »
I have a map that freezes. I made a 5-level water pit above the surface and a drainage pipe for it, and a chamber between (I'm going to kill goblins with a u-bend).

I just designated the finished tower as a pond, and the water went one level down and froze in midair.

So something you can do if you want to go all bondvillain is make an icefloor like that (the edge of the tower is one z-level above the screen cap), dump a goblin onto the ice, and wait until spring for the goblin to plummet to its death.

Vomit Vigilante strikes again
Fortress Guard officials baffled
by Ked Lorddisembowelment, Competent Reporter

The body of officer Solon Lunchescliffs was found last night near Dodok Drinkercrush's mill and waterworks.

Coroner Nish Tentmajesty pronounced Lunchescliffs' cause of death to be spinning vomit wounds to the neck and eyes, a hallmark of the Vomit Vigilante, whom the guard has been pursuing since Hematite when sitings were first reported.

Reports state that Lunchescliffs was about to start a day of beatings after a day of drinking near the legendary meeting hall. After finishing a stack of wine Lunchescliffs started his queue of criminals to beat for violating mayor Paintedbasements' prohibition of idol exportation last week.

However, Lunchescliffs was soon mortally wounded. Tantrumming guard captain Urist Gazellewires came up with no trace of the Vomit Vigilante after the incident, but Drinkercrush, the sole witness, states he escaped under a water wheel.

"I couldn't believe it," she went on. "You'd have to be superdwarvenly agile to pull that off."

"There's no way we'll be seeing more of the Vomit Vigilante." declared Gazellewires. "The water in the pipes under that wheel is at least seven dwarves deep."

Officials certainly have not called off the search, though. Both mayor Paintedbasements and baron Futurebakes are still employing adventurers to rid the fortress of the Vomit Vigilante, offering a reward of Championhood. None have been successful, and those who have spotted the hurl hurler come away with mangled thumbs, unable to further fight.

Before last night's events, 6 craftsdwarves have starved in prison and 3 additional have been beat publicly. Both mayor Paintedbasements and baron Futurebakes have declined to comment, although in light of recent woundings and deaths beatings have seen a decrease.

"It's only a matter of time before this criminal is in chains." said Gazellewires. "Every day our investigation is leading us closer."

Others, such as Tentmajesty, have not been so optimistic.
"I've seen ultra-mighty adventurers brought down by this ambusher. I doubt if even Thine Eagletubes, legendary swordsman and armor user, could find him, let alone kill him."

The Vomit Vigilante often stalks near noble offices and guard barracks. He wears a donkey leather cowl and a pig tail dress, as well as armor made of various materials. Citizens are advised to stay out of sunlight until he is caught.

DF Suggestions / Teaching/instruction inherits from parties
« on: June 18, 2008, 01:41:59 pm »
My armies consist always of marksdwarves and wrestlers.

This is because marksdwarves and wrestlers don't sever each other's throats while sparring, unlike every other unit type.

My proposed remedy is 'teaching sessions', rather than 'sparring'.

I'll explain how it works, in sort-of-pseudocode.

EVERYONE attends PARTIES. This boosts {conversationalist, persuader, negotiator, comedian...}

Therefore, with teaching sessions:

SOLIDERS attend TEACHING SESSIONS. This boosts {speardwarf, axedwarf, armor user, shield user...}

I hope I'm getting across what I want to go on here.
A party boosts social skills, by having dwarves show up at a meeting.

So an instruction session would boost melee skills, by having dwarves show up at a meeting. In this way, they don't have to kill each other to learn.

I'm a little unsure how you would work out who would teach. The obvious answer is 'whoever is most skilled'. Most people don't really have champion hammerdwarves lying around for this purpose. However, this would give a good reason for embarking with one. (Also, migrants show up).

And the algorithm can be adjusted to give the teacher relevant experience for teaching a subject.

And I know there's stuff on the dev page

Passing on Knowledge:  Most entities will have a system (possibly instinctive or informal) of passing on knowledge. Players will have opportunities to study under various masters to hone their skills. The master might also be a source of quests/errands for apprentice players (a wizard's apprentice might be asked to collect spell components, etc.). Soldiers will be trained in various ways - perhaps all children in a town are trained as warriors (the maladjusted wash-outs can go become necromancers and come back for some zombification: meek, creepy children can also go to the local swamp and mix poison). If an entity codifies its foci, culture, and laws, it might reappear later even if all of its members disappear. In general, masters that can write will be able to produce instructional manuals for their skills (unless the nature of the skill makes this nonsensical). The effectiveness of these manuals will depend in part upon the teaching skill of the master, the writing skill of the master, and the reading skill of the student (including basic language skills). A civilization that fails to pass on knowledge will probably return to base savagery in time.
about this, but what I wanted to focus on was not getting dwarves' eyes poked out when they learn how to kill. Especially with the health care bugs that make it so I have to micromanage a dwarf's recovery so he doesn't get ignored and starve to death because he's bedridden.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Roughest Start

The fisherdwarf was first to be dragged away, by tigerfish.

Then the herbalist, the lumberjack, and the guy taking a break outside, by a Fire Man who swam out of the vent and spewed magma all over them, one by one.

Two miners then offed themselves in a lake, because hey, it's easier than procreation.

The only one to survive was Urist the Mechanic, Expedition Leader. When I was certain she was going to go fling herself in the river, some migrants thought it would be a good idea to come live in my hole in the hill where dwarves go to die. I was never so glad to see a herd of accomplished cheese makers.

Urist's condition has since improved to 'unhappy'.

Also: All these hippos and carps.

There's an exposed underground pool on my map, I think because a small pond got generated adjacent to it. It's three levels up the mountain from my entrance. I can see a bunch of frogmen and olmmen and a giant olm and no doubt more menaces.

I'm open to suggestions as to what to do with it. Whether to order my marksmen to fill it with werewolf bone bolts or drain it into my chasm. I figured you are all more imaginative than I am. I don't have any magma on my map or the answer would be basically obvious. I kind of want to dump a goblin into it but goblins have been slow getting here and I've not been making cage traps like I should have.

It doesn't freeze over in winter.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Goblin vs Window
« on: April 09, 2008, 12:09:00 am »
Hypothesis:
If you drop a goblin onto a window, then: KEEEEESH!!!!

Procedure:
Having no glass, I built a gem window, 15 levels below the surface, and a stone tower reaching 15 levels above the surface. I had a caged goblin handy, so I dropped that dude.

Result:
Window unharmed. Goblin harmed.

Video.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Death Bracelet
« on: April 01, 2008, 10:48:00 pm »
I'm experimenting with different ways of offing my prisoners (I imagine the dwarves are doing this because they're bored) and I just killed my first goblin off my first goblin-tossing tower, now at +13 elevation and growing.

Goblin hit the ground and lost his head, both arms, and both legs. His left leg went up and to the right one square. He landed on a pebbles tile (not sure if it used to be a boulder, someone please test if dropping a creature onto a boulder turns it into pebbles).

At the very exact second he landed, a craftsdwarf just finished a legendary artifact. Nothing much special about it but here it is anyway:

Kuroldoroz, "Embracefatal", a Basalt bracelet
This is a Basalt bracelet. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with Moonstone and Blue garnet and encircled with bands of Basalt and Feather tree. On the item is an image of a bat in Basalt. On the item is an image of a dwarf in Sunstone.
(45,600 Dwarf Dollars)

Just an incident of coincidence for your reading pleasure.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarven duty to nature.
« on: March 28, 2008, 12:43:00 pm »
One of my first waterworks projects was refilling all the nearby lakes for a more diverse ecosystem, using a nearby brook. (Do fish get sucked up in pumps and then pumped back out?)

Another thing is I've disabled hunting and most of the fishing so I don't depopulate the whole map, preferring to capture two of each species and breed them for food.
