DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Trying to embark without saltwater
« on: November 21, 2023, 01:59:24 am »
I'm trying to play the Steam version of the game. It has been awhile since I last played and am just trying to get a nice easy start. Searching embark locations, there doesn't seem to be a way to filter out saltwater, and hovering over the zones doesn't show saltwater or not (except sometimes in the biome name, like Saltwater Marsh). Is there a way to see if an area has saltwater or not and is there a way to filter out the saltwater when searching embark locations?

DF Gameplay Questions / Salt water not becoming pure after screw pump
« on: September 22, 2009, 11:57:43 pm »
I am having trouble getting my cistern to actually hold desalinated water.  I built walls and a floor for the cistern, but if I pause and check as the water starts flowing out of the pump, it is a water source at the head of the pump, but not a water source where it flows out.

I built this thing, then I think I screwed something up by not having the pump in securely, so it pumped salt water in accidentally.  I drained it and started again, correctly positioning the pump.  Then, I waited for the water drain and evaporate.  Do the muddy walls count as salted?  Can I clean the floors and walls somehow, or am I stuck disassembling and reassembling the whole thing?

DF Gameplay Questions / When Tame Horses Attack
« on: September 21, 2009, 07:15:06 pm »
When I was attacked by elves, whose nation I started at war with, I caught several of them in cages.  One of those caught was a horse.  Fortunately, I have a trainer, so I tamed the horse.  I had some trouble letting him out of the cage, since it kept claiming that I needed another large cage to put the animal into.  Hogwash, I thought, and attached a lever and popped the cage that way.  The horse and wardogs immediately went at it and the horse was slaughtered along with one of the dogs.  Additionally, my dwarfs were all getting interrupted by the horse prior to it being slain.

My question is: why was the tamed horse still hostile?  Is there a step I missed?

Is there a way to access the "Profile" (z) for war dogs?  I swear that I was able to check on the kills of my animals at one point, but I haven't played for awhile and cannot figure out how it works, or if it even still does.

Also, I will get messages indicating that an animal is struck down.  I can see it in the list, but cannot zoom to it.  How can I find out where the conflict happened?

DF Gameplay Questions / Fey Dwarf not taking a workshop
« on: February 06, 2009, 12:03:40 am »
I have a fey armorsmith who is just standing around.  I built a magma forge after the fey mood began.  He refuses to move.  Is there something I am missing?

DF Gameplay Questions / Slaughtering a caught animal
« on: January 23, 2009, 01:17:19 am »
This should be straightforward, but for whatever reason, I don't seem to be able to get an animal I caught in a cage to be marked for slaughter.

I have a Rhesus Macaque that I caught with a cage trap.  It doesn't show up in the animals list, so I cannot mark it for slaughter there.  Is there another way?  Could I let it out of the cage and then slaughter it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Tantrums and retaking a fortress
« on: October 21, 2008, 10:27:20 pm »
In my fortress, I bumped into some of the hidden fun stuff and my fortress is wiped.  I decide to retake and successfully kill everything that moved in.  However, some dwarves died, some got injured.  Apparently, death and injury is too much for these poor, poor military dwarves, everyone goes crazy, tantrum spiral until everyone is dead.

I decide to retake again, thinking it should be easier with none of the hidden fun stuff to contend with, but I still have to attack some things.  Same shit again.

Is it actually possible to retake a fortress?  So far, it seems like an aggravating waste of time.  Not because there is much resistance, but because the dwarves keep f'ing killing each other.  ARGH!!!!

DF Suggestions / Fix the cooking exploit
« on: September 27, 2008, 09:49:57 am »
I was looking through the list of voting suggestions and didn't see this item, so I decided to create a thread for it.

A well known tactic in DF is to brew everything you have.  As you need food, you can simply cook alcohol and "mince" it with other alcohol.  While it makes sense to be able to use alcohol as one ingredient, you shouldn't be able to mix for different alcohols in a bottle and call it "dinner." (If you do, you might need some help. ;) )

My proposal is that only one alcohol and one of each other type of ingredient (no mixing turtle with turtle with a side of turtley-turtle).  Similar rules should be in place about cooking syrup as well.

DF Gameplay Questions / Fortress Selection Screen Question: Races
« on: September 21, 2008, 06:27:32 pm »
What does the order the races are listed in indicate?

What do the red dashes next to a race, particularly the goblins, mean?

I have guesses, but couldn't find anything to back them up.

DF Gameplay Questions / Need help filling a moat
« on: September 15, 2008, 01:58:22 am »
I have an empty moat that I'd like to fill with water.  I have connected the local river to it, but the water gets into my moat and cannot fill it fast enough; it evaporates before it can accumulate enough to fill.  I started trying to make the channels wider, but I'd like any tips that could help me get the moat filled faster.

DF Gameplay Questions / Removing stairs from above
« on: September 13, 2008, 10:13:28 pm »
Is there a way to remove stairs from above?  I needed a miner to enter into an unflooded moat to do some mining and now I want to get him onto the last bit of land bridging the two sides.  I tried making stairs and then channelling them, but he drops back down into the moat.

DF Gameplay Questions / Draw Bridges and what is under them
« on: September 13, 2008, 09:35:38 pm »
I think I might have made a mistake in the creation of my draw bridge.  This is the first time I am doing this and build it over solid land, since I wanted my dwarfs to be able to not have to deal with a moat while it was being constructed. Well, now it seems that I cannot dig a channel after I raise the bridge... Is there a way I could still do it?  Maybe I could try to collapse the area, but I think it is over rooms in my fortress.

DF Gameplay Questions / A question about Wells
« on: September 13, 2008, 02:49:22 am »
I have built wells before, but now that it is critically urgent, my well doesn't seem to count as a water source.

I am under siege by goblins, and I am in no position to try to go outside.  So, I drained a murky pool from underneath and then built a well over that.  I have an extra bucket, but when I wait for them to tend to the injured, I get a message saying that the give water was canceled: no water source.

Is there a problem using water from Murky pools?  Or, is this a bug of some sort?

Thanks!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Selling captured goblins?
« on: September 06, 2008, 05:19:02 pm »
I decided to try to see if I could sell some of my captured goblins, since they had just been caught when the caravans were arriving.  When the dwarfs tried to move them from the stockpile to the Depot for trading, it looks like they either let them out or they escaped from their cages.  Did I do something wrong, or can you just not sell your captives?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Losing interest around 50 dorfs or so
« on: September 05, 2008, 11:07:41 pm »
I am pretty good at starting a new fortress and getting it up and running.  I have a lot of fun managing the dwarfs at the early stages.  However, it seems that whenever I get to about 50 or so, the sheer amount of micromanaging involved has me abandoning the fortress.

I am wondering, is there a good strategy for maintaining interest when the fortress population gets large?  Should I try cutting down on the number of industries I am involved in, or is there some trick that I don't know about?
