DF Gameplay Questions / Huza--What? Struck down by the Gods, I say!
« on: March 18, 2008, 01:22:00 am »
Just started a new fortress, the old one was poorly designed and ill-managed from the beginning. I hoped that what I had learned from my only other relatively "Everyone Isn't Dead" fortress would benefit this one. I had a good starting location, except for the fact that my wagon began on the peak of a mountain and I had to dig down a good 8 Zs to get to water.

I finally get down there, start digging out shops (Nothing but obsidian on the level I needed, slow going), and my odd-dwarf-out, with all the noble skills and the expedition leader, randomly fell over dead. The message read as something to the effect of "Somar has been struck down". I immediately pause and go to the scene of the crime, only to find his corpse and his possessions. Looked around for blood splatter, an animal, anything. I go into the units tab and none of them are anywhere near the corpse. He couldn't have died of thirst, as none of the other dwarves are thirsty, and he was within two tiles of the brook, which I had designated as a meeting area and drinking area, as it was devoid of thine nemesis, ze carp!

So uh... Did he simply have a stroke, or did the gods disfavor his poor soul and randomly decided to smite him down?

DF Gameplay Questions / Uses for Useless Immigrants?
« on: March 17, 2008, 11:15:00 pm »
Hey guys, just wanna state that so far, I love this game to pieces.
I've just had a fort survive long enough to get immigrants. Then, shortly thereafter, more immigrants. Currently up to about 35, not counting the children (Those buggers breed fast, I tells ya!), and I've moved from a high level of efficiency (idlers: 0) to incredibly low efficiency (Idlers 13+). I've sent all of the truly useless ones into the military where they have only managed to get into dabbling in their expected regions of combat specialization, despite being 'off duty' and being given barracks to wrestle in and archery targets (Yup, made them into the rooms).

So my question is as such: What should I have the others do so they can actually earn the huge amounts of my food they are eating? I've already recruited a few would-be carpenters to build beds as fast as they possibly can, militarized or turned into pack-mules the peasants 'n such, but what else can be done with these seemingly worthless saps? Don't have any fish for the fishers or gems for the cutters... Militarize them as well and go police-state on all their-asses? heh.

DF Gameplay Questions / Carp == Slaughterfish??
« on: March 11, 2008, 10:29:00 pm »
So, the river next to my fort is filled with various types of aquatic animal, mostly carp and turtles...

Well, imagine my surprise when I go looking for my poor Carpenter and I find his bloody, mangled, decomposing corpse surrounded with dead carp, the entirety of the riverbank coated with blood for several hundred feet down-stream.

I was not previously aware that fish could DO that! heh!

So, I'm assuming that building in a channel from a sufficient distance away from the main river will ward away these little killing machines? lol!

DF Gameplay Questions / Military Promotions, and Unassigning Dogs
« on: March 10, 2008, 06:38:00 pm »
Two questions, I think I screwed up at the very beginning when a back bear attacked:

1: How to do un-assign my 3 war dogs from the planter that should NEVER see combat?

2: How do I un-assign all of my non-combatant dwarves from the squad of the only guy who should be fighting until some immigrant cannon-fodder comes along?

I feel bad about not figuring it out, but meh. Thanks in advance for any help!  :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Strange river, requesting advice.
« on: March 09, 2008, 05:47:00 pm »
Hey all, relative newbie here, just started playing about a week ago, and I seem to have encountered a problem.

I have finally found a map with readily accessed magma, and with a river near-by to boot. Almost the entirety of the map is flat... Except for the stuff I need. The River is located at -1Z, surrounded by clay walls, as is the first layer of lava, though it is surrounded by Obsidian walls.

The magma isn't exactly my problem, as I believe I will be able to place a magma smelter on the surface (0/1?). No, the problem is getting to the water without flooding my fortress...

~ = River
| = Clay walls

So, could you help a poor newbie out? I'm not entirely certain as to how to position a well mid-air above the river, and a channel don't exactly work, me thinks, because that'll just cause the river to expand, not creating any land on which for my dwarves to stand to get a drink... No aquifer, btw.

DF Gameplay Questions / Animals, Cages.
« on: June 05, 2008, 02:04:00 pm »
All right, been playing DF for a while now, but this is the first time I've tried to bring along animals other than dogs and cats, and I want to know how to get my herd of cows into cages, or at least into a confined area in which they can breed and be kept safely away from wandering skeletal elk.

Thanks,
Psilontech

DF Gameplay Questions / Elves //Shakes Fist//
« on: March 29, 2008, 05:20:00 pm »
A great famine had wrought my fortress to the bone. Some of our most prominent of citizens had starved to death, the remainder too focused on hunting rats to have the strength to carry on to bury them. It did indeed appear to be a dire time for this fortress, but then joy, rapture, a caravan is coming, we're saved!!!

With a slight turn of the stomach we realize that which comes to us: Tree hugging Elves!  :) ^_^

DF Gameplay Questions / Unable to Farm?
« on: March 24, 2008, 10:06:00 pm »
Ok, fortress has been running for a while, everything is going fairly well after I find a suitable source of water for my dwarves. All of the sudden, I notice that half of my jobs are being canceled for the dwarf to hunt for vermin... Apparently, almost all of my dwarves are starving.
Now, I check my stockpiles, almost all of the food is gone! I check my seeds... and there are hundreds of them. I check the farmers, that's all they should be doing... So I check the farms to see if they are set correctly. Yup, they appear to be, 24/7 plump helmet production. But what's this...? Plump helmets are highlighted in red! I presume this is meant as some sort of warning to the effect of "Hey, I can't plant these anymore!". So eh... what's up, doc? I haven't had any farms run for such a long time before, do I need to replace farms after a while. Underground soil is Red Clay (Or was it Red Sand...?), if it makes any difference.
I was under the influence that only rock needed to be irrigated to be able to be properly farmed, eh?

Thanks for any and all help provided, guys!  :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Resolution Problem, Possibly?
« on: March 20, 2008, 10:00:00 pm »
Just built my first magma glass smelter and whenever I attempt to build something out of it, the description of the item is too long and I have no idea what it is I'm attempting to build other than the material it is going to be built of.

Any ideas on how to fix this? It just cuts off the item description off at the end of the screen...
