DF Suggestions / Building masonry structures gives experience.

I don't know why it isn't like that now, but building structures with masonry [walls, bridges, floors, etc] gives no experience in masonry.  So I build some huge tower made of ten thousand boulders, and my masons are no more experienced for it.
Is it unreasonable to ask that my Urist McBricklayer get experience when performing his profession?

DF Gameplay Questions / attacking a caravan

I don't like elves.  In the past I've built walls around my trade depot and drowned the elf traders inside, but for some reason doing so in the latest version (39e) didn't work, they just sat in the 6-7 level water for weeks, until going crazy.  I imagine that's a bug, but that's not what I'm here for.
My question is:  how do people usually attack the caravans?  There has to be an easier way.  Or five easier ways.  (I'd prefer not destroying all the items with magma, etc, but I understand that sometimes you have to make sacrifices...)
