DF Gameplay Questions / granting residence dwarfs

Hi,

In rapid succession there have been 5 dwarfs who have asked for residency to kill monsters(5 granted residency, 11 normal dwarfs and 2 children) 1, so I have granted them. Does this mean I have 5 extra mouths to feed?

I was rather hoping to put them in squads, but they appear to be totally inderpendant?

Do I have any control over them?
Can I make them part of my fortress?

I was just about to embark when I tabbed through and saw there were no Goblins. How does this effect a playthrough? I always assumed part of the fun was to defend aginst goblins?

DF Gameplay Questions / Wall confusion

Hi ,

I have built a wall 3 of the four sides look good. But the last side seems to have gone wrong , I am not sure whats wrong with it.

D= draw bride I only expected 'O' on the corners and by the draw bridge , I have no idea why

I have 'O's else where?

in looks like this

O=ODDDOO==========OOO===O

When it should be

O=ODDDO================O

Not sure if I am making sense. I have no idea how to fix it as I have no idea why its gone werid?

This is confusing me, the mines have just come through and dug out the room, then I try to place tables, chairs beds etc and I get 'No access to..'

The miners have just been there how can there not be access?

DF Gameplay Questions / How to create an easy world?

Hi,
I have created 8 worlds, Medium size , frequent minerals.

Then I search for low savagery, low evil, rivers, no aquifer, deep metal ,flux surface deposits.

Some maps I have had no hits, others no where near a dwarf civilization or to near golblins or no goblins ,or no trees etc

What I want is some where which is fairly safe near civilizations .

I looked at the advance screen and freaked out.

Is there any newbie friendly worlds to down load.. or can you use seeds?
