DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / DF2 Speed and You (And me)
« on: July 17, 2011, 02:27:51 pm »
Its been quite some time since I last played DF and I was wondering if an equivalent project to this following link. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=28841.0. I apologize for posting such a simplistic question but I am rather out of the loop. After searching the forum for "speed boosts" and "enhancements" and other such terms it came up with forum games and nothing I could find that was connected to my request.

So, what news to boost my precious fps gentlemen? I'll run through the basics, turning off weather, and the like but I was curious.

DF General Discussion / Wonky Screen Size
« on: March 24, 2010, 10:37:52 pm »
Hullo all, its been a while since I mucked about with dorfs, and In that time I had a fairly significant computer upgrade. Going from a 2.1ghz machine to a quad core 2.5ghz with most of the trimmings.

I am getting back into it, but the standard 800x600 is, well, tiny. My native resolution is 1920x1080 and I can barely read the opening text of the menu. Now I am using a graphic tile set ( http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Graphics_set_repository#Dystopian_Rhetoric ) with instructions from ( http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Tileset#Graphics_sets ) I also removed the black space, assuming it would expand to fill the screen afterward. Not so much.

I have also applied a few of the frame rate optimizers from ( http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Maximizing_framerate ) Though I would not think they would affect this sort of thing...

Basically I would love some help because I am finally in the mood to get my dorf on again, and I can't bloody well see the dorfs!

EDIT:      I am running df_28_181_40d19_2_win btw

DF Bug Reports / [40c] Champion Caught In Task Loop By Artifact
« on: January 28, 2009, 12:25:34 am »
Its year 5 of my fort, I have 3 champion marksdwarves and one of them decided to pick up my artifact aluminum mace. Now, I've told her to drop it, (forbid, hide) and when I do she moves to pick up her crossbow, but stops. Turns around, and walks the other way. Then she stops again, and turns to drop it but is stuck in a loop of cancelling tasks.
Its a little bothersome because I have an actual mace dwarf about to become a mace lord and the artifact hammer I've had since the first hour of game play is unreachable. Any thoughts? I could probably use dwarf companion but that feels like cheating, even if it is a bug. I saved/reloaded and that did not fix the issue either (stupid windows ingraining that)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarven Ambush?
« on: January 16, 2009, 03:16:37 am »
ver 40c.
regular dwarf fortress, no modded race or hacks except for the old speed hack.
year 4 of my fortress of 68 (yeah... I sort of... Lost a few here or there...)

Hoi, I haven't been keeping up with the updates as well as I probally should, but I did get something strange. Now I don't think it was an anomaly, but it was certainly strange.

Basically... Well, the latest goblin ambush on my fort was led by a pikedwarf. Yes, a pikedwarf. It looked like he had a goblin name, (it was a mess of s's and and p's, no urist mcbackstabber here) and he showed up as a dwarf, his equipment was that of a dwarf, but he wielded a pike and led a group of goblins.

i took a peek at his equipment, and yeah he was a dwarf alright, and when he was spotted by a dwarf a message came up (a lone dwarf ambush) or something to that effect. He got along fine with the gobbos. As I mentioned previously, it looked like he was leading them, always in the front of the pack.

Now, I know I've missed some fairly major updates, but when were dwarves being attacked by their own kind? In unison with goblins no less! Probally just a glitch in reading the name of the creature, but I can't say for sure, I don't mod or program, and I don't really think its a glitch, simply because a message popped when he was seen and soon gibbed. Thoughts?

Well, its finally happened. DF has gone commercial. What are we to do now? Soon toady will introduce pepsi as a brewable substance, and reeboks will be artifact shoes, only available to possessed or macabre dwarves! (mmm dwarf skin reeboks...) Look below, perhaps I AM overreacting, but this caught my by such surprise...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / my 2cents
« on: December 10, 2008, 05:24:47 am »
Well, I just had the first slaughter of 2 of my regiments, and I'm feeling pretty good. Trained these guys for a few years, they had piecemeal copper, and iron equipment, no one but the sheriff had full anything, most were elite wrestlers with at least proficient weapons skills.

I send them against a group of fellow wrestler goblins, smack bam, death. I let them sit there for a while, and then we were ambushed again a few days later. (The soldiers are pretty bad ass, they just stood in the rain and waited for orders) anyway, turned out to be a full regiment of crossbow gobbos, who proceeded to kill 3/4 of my trained troops, and cripple the remainder. So, lacking further options and to avoid the slaughter of my loyal dwarves, I drafted the entire population, all 75 dwarves, and had them swarm the goblins.

I think I lost 20 in total, and wounded a little less than that. All in all it was fun! Watching the horde of angry, ANGRY peasents boot-stomp the goblins into the ground and moat is always really entertaining. My only regret? I lost my legendary weaponsmith in the scrap. But its okay, during the battle one of the recruits wandered away and crafted an aluminum artifact mace. (:D)

of course, now im desperately trying to keep my mayor sane, because the captain of the guard was his girlfriend and she bought it, along with 2-3 of the original 7. So senor mayor has watched all his good friends die, and was gut-shot in the battle, so hes trying to bash heads from bed (I hope he comes out of the funk soon,  hes the strongest dwarf in the fortress by far, all epic stats from his desk job, trading, and crafting mechanisms and if he goes nuts no one is going to be able to put him down with his girlfriend out of the running)

Anywho, if luck is with me, I'll be able to start smithing some steel magma smithies soon, so woohoo for me, alright! I cant wait to start production on that sweet, sweet... copper. I havent found a source of iron yet :S but Im sure I will, or I can just smelt the large number of gobbo weapons, good times had by all! (except the mayor)

EDIT: Basically im just getting back into dwarf fortress and thought I would announce the most interesting thing to happen to my fortress so far. (ignoring the usual engineering disasters. How was I to know well pressure acted thus!)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Outrageous Prices
« on: April 11, 2008, 02:55:00 am »
Well, I just encrusted some Larch arrows with sapphires (I had intended to do so to steel, setting the steel bolts right next to the workshop, but for w/e reason my legendary gem crafter chose these hippy sticks) and, well, Im a little shocked by the price. I could buy 2-3 caravans with that much. It just came as a shock that <<Larch>> would be worth 50025... then again they DO menace with exceptionally worked sapphire...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Your favourite squad designation
« on: April 10, 2008, 10:54:00 pm »
Alright, I've finally gotten a game to the point where I need to start making generalized squads for my decently trained dwarven corps.
Now, I was thinking of getting 1 of each weapon in a squad, with 2-3 marksdwarves to help out. I hear problems about people not having the right kind of weapon at the moment, and this might fix that to some degree. However, since it would be more generalized it would also be significantly weaker than if I simply cross trained or made squads of 1 weapon (or damage) type.

1 Swordsdwarf
1 Hammerdwarf
1 Speardwarf
1 Axedwarf
2-3 marksdwarves

(I'm not including the mace in here because statistically it and the hammer are equivilant and I like hammers more)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Destroying Walls
« on: April 10, 2008, 04:16:00 am »
Alright, I've made a stupid goof up, I accidentally built a ... Few charcoal walls. Now it isnt that big of a deal, but charcoal is flammable and Im worried that it will ignite at the worst possible time (dragon, anyone?) I was just wondering if there is anyway to destroy constructed walls, as it is not feasible to remine them. Suggestions??

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Workshop Arrangement. Opinions?
« on: April 10, 2008, 12:55:00 am »
Alright, I've been playing for a while, and for the most part I use a single configuration for my workshop's. Like with like with a communal furniture pile and finished goods pile. Well defended if a dwarf has a tantrum (lots of doors) and war dogs chained to the entrance to, uh, deter would be thieves (kind of moot, since I also have them at my entrance, but it makes me feel better) So, I was just wondering if you good folks would like to post your designs, or previous designs which have worked well before, are aesthetically pleasing, etc. Something to mix it up a little.

DF Gameplay Questions / A question, and a story, about battle tactics
« on: April 12, 2008, 02:23:00 am »
Alright, I had this awesome, almost completed walled, moated fortress of doom (actually the moat was juuuuust about to be filled, soon as I got that last sapphire) and lo and behold im attacked by a pretty large gobbo invasion force (about a 16, half marksmen, the other half a hodgepodge of spears, 2 handed swords, and hammers)

Now, I feel good. This is why I trained those 8 immigrants into brutal units of death. Also why I equipped them right off the bat with high quality plate sets. And steel weapons. They had trained for around 4 years straight, they were a force to be reckoned with, alright. A worthy drain on my resources, so I thought.

However, when I ordered my dwarves to drop everything, and to skoot inside, I forgot I had built a ceiling over my exposed courtyard (my mayor/mechanic was just about to link the purty new drawbridge, turning it into an impregnable fortress) so I had to forbid the courtyard.

Even though I cancelled all the tasks, and ordered all but the soldiers inside, they still milled around the entrance, trying to get out (they considered the majority of my exposed courtyards to be "inside"... my bad)

Every one of my common labourers. About 15 in all. (the other 5 had been just about to reach the sole foot bridge leading into my fort when they ran into a *gasp* baby snatcher, so naturally they ran the other way *towards the swords/spear gobbos.* naturally they were punished for their stupidity.

On the bright note my legendary miner/grower/butcher "chops" rithgutid managed to throttle 2 of them and rip the arms off another completely untrained (though jacked all to hell due to constant mining, for that hes getting Zagududos, the jet coffin) all the while having bits of himself chopped off and flying into the nearby brook. Sadly, he did not survive the experince. He shall be missed. Few were as good at pounding rock as he was.

Ah yes. My dwarves at the entrance were still milling around oblivious to the threat that came for them, in elephant leather shoes (I noticed that many of the goblins were wearing these, I question the legitimacy of these shoes as elephants are natures natural killer, and these were *just* goblins)

So, the markgobbos were first to arrive, being met by my sole soldier who was not presently sleeping or drinking himself into a stupor, Catten Tekkudtathtak the elite wrestler, the pride of my army. He didnt make it 5 steps before an bolt took him in the head, piecing it. He fell unconcious in a heap not even coherent. He was swiftly chopped to bits by the arriving swords/spearsmen.

Then the vicious goblins, turned their crossbows towards my entrance where my gawking, milling crowd of plebians had actually *grown* since before, and opened fire. They struck down half my fortress because I didnt know how to order my dwarves into the bowels of my fortress, safe behind trap upon trap.

Eventually the rest of my pitiful army showed up, and after taking nary a casualty drove them off (with the help of 2 dozen war-dogs whose losses were somewhat higher) My question to good folk is, how do I manage my dwarves to flee into the bowels of my fortress when imminent, penetrating death is nigh?

I turned off active orders, ordered all but soldiers inside, turned off body and refuse hauling and resource collection. What did I do wrong? Where did I go wrong? The catapults were so close to being ready, the bridge, she was on the verge of being linked, and now...

Now my fortress will fall apart due to my lack of unskilled labour and my poor management. Please, enlighten me to proper battle tactics in the face of a threat.

EDIT :: I wanted to apologize for unloading, but it was to be my greatest creation... yet. (silly to get attached to a fortress like that, but there you have it) I would truly appreciate any advice anyone is willing to give.

DF Bug Reports / (38c) Mouse and Keyboard Deactivation
« on: April 16, 2008, 08:42:00 pm »
Alright, well, when I start up DF my mouse and keyboard work fine, however, less than a minute in, it locks up. Now, I recently removed weather and temperature to reduce lag in the game and am wondering if this could have impacted my game. Previous to that my mouse and keyboard worked perfectly fine, I had not had any trouble with the controls so I suspect editing the init file is to blame. When I enter the game, I have time to unpause the game and look at a few stockpiles and then it ceases functioning. I searched the forum, couldnt find anything similiar (I am sorry if this is a repost)and I would appreciate any help. (perhaps resetting the init file with a clean copy?)

EDIT :: Well, I reset the init file, however now it wont start at all. Kind of irritating, actually. I recently installed a new fan and added new ram to my comp. I cant imagine the fan affecting game play, but maybe the ram? Sigh... All I want to do is throw kittens into magma... Maybe make bread with their bones, but thats it!

DF Bug Reports / War-Dog bug
« on: April 12, 2008, 03:28:00 am »
I recently skirmished with goblins, and due to unfortunate coincidences lost a good portion of my army, the war dogs designated to those fallen refuse to give up that designation, and more so, seem to be triggering the traps they walk over. (3 have died from stone fall, and I have captured one of them in a cage)
