DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / dwarves stuck in cages
« on: April 26, 2020, 03:29:13 pm »
I've got two dwarves stuck in cages, and my other dwarves aren't letting them out.

I rebuilt the cages in the dining hall, but they are still not being let out.

This is very frustrating. Is this a known bug? Does anyone have a solution?

DF General Discussion / Bentgirder: official thread
« on: January 01, 2011, 01:42:44 pm »
A new thread for a new year! Bentgirder is my tool for getting new players into Dwarf Fortress quickly. There are two parts, a saved game that lets a new player skip finding a location, and a tutorial to walk the player through the first steps of navigating the interface and building a fortress.

It works great with the Lazy Newb Pack. Just run the save updater once you unzip Bentgirder.

I'm always looking for feedback, so let me know what you think.

Bentgirder tutorial on Magmawiki.
Bentgirder save on DFFD.

Much thanks to everyone who contributed to the tutorial, even if it was just to ask a question: Zaerosz, Box, Kwieland, Used, Ryun, Quietust, and all the anonymous editors, too.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Breeding Pit
« on: October 13, 2010, 07:31:50 pm »
I think I have found a way to safely farm animals without taming them first. You have to build a structure I call a breeding pit.

Start with a short tunnel, about 8 tiles long. You need to access the end tile from above, so plan ahead and make sure there's room on the next floor up. The end of the corridor is the future animal pit, and it is closed off from the fortress by a lever-operated door or floodgate. Most of the corridor is taken up with cage traps. The other end of the tunnel is a lockable access door.

Dump mama and papa critter in their new 1x1 home. Wait for nature to take its course. Once the kids are born, you lock the outer door, and pull the switch for the inner door. The happy, feral family will run out and get caught by the traps. The ideal number of traps is the creature's maximum litter size, plus two. (Plus one if you depend on spores.) Once you have them all captured, unlock the outer door, and collect your captured animals, neatly sorted out one to a cage.

Bonus: Move the exit door over to a diagonal, and build a fortification at the end of the tunnel. This way, if a critter doesn't get trapped for some reason, you can station a crossbowdwarf at the end, and let him shoot the extraneous animal.

Bonus Two: Add a standing spear trap to the drop zone, and link it to a lever. This lets you turn your breeding pit into an execution pit with one lever pull. Make sure you keep track of which lever does what!

DF General Discussion / Font Finding Expedition
« on: September 28, 2010, 10:21:07 pm »
Dwarf Fortress has True Type font support! Has anyone tried it yet?

I just delved through dafont.com looking for free fonts that might be useful. It's pretty quick work if set a custom preview that includes the ☼ value, Γ weight, and ≡exceptional quality≡ symbols.

The first I found were Red Hat's liberation family: Liberation Serif and Liberation Sans. Both look pretty solid to me.

These fonts all have the proper symbols:
MPH 2B Damase
Times Sans Serif
Tuffy

If you're willing to put up with a little weirdness, these two should also work:
Proletarsk has a smiley face in the value symbol.
Sanserifing is just odd and hard to read.

If you're feeling old school, try Nouveau IBM. The narrow variant looks different enough from DF's default type that it might be worth using.

DF General Discussion / Combat log as poetry
« on: September 16, 2010, 11:20:28 pm »
I found this at random, and felt like sharing:

Quote
When others play Dwarf Fortress, it usually results in epic tales of tragedy recalling Balin’s ill-fated attempt to retake Moria. When I play Dwarf Fortress, it generates surreal Beat poetry about animal abuse.

DF General Discussion / Man, what?

"Our colleagues at the BBC agree: this may be the biggest story of the century."

This popped up in my google alert. It's like some sort of random fake-news generator. Either this is a dada art project, or a moronic scheme to load up their site with random search terms.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / withered plump helmets, $4 each
« on: July 13, 2010, 04:29:29 pm »

I thought garbage always had 0 value? My dwarves got rid of it before I could try to trade it to the elves anyway.

Have I found a new bug?

I have an idea on how to get my friends to play Dwarf Fortress. I'm going to do what TinyPirate did, and put together a custom DF package, with a graphics pack and a pre-generated world.

Before I start, I want to get some input from more experienced players. I don't use graphics myself, so I need to find a set that is easy to read. I don't want one that overwrites accented vowels.

Also, what skills and supplies should my starting seven have? I was thinking of a Miner, a Woodcutter/Axedwarf, a Mason/Architect, a Carpenter, a Planter, a Mechanic/Stonecrafter, and a Doctor/Trader/Brewer. I intend to bring a ton of food and booze, two dogs, and one cat.

Is there anything important that I'm missing? Please, give me your input.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I stole vermin from the Elves
« on: May 26, 2010, 11:21:04 pm »
I don't mean the usual methods of merchant-plundering, either. Apparently, if you have a cage set up, you can assign the merchant's small animals to it.

By the time the elves left, I had a dozen birds of various species, about five squirrels, a couple lizards, a rat, and a large roach. I only did it to test the bug, but now I have all these useless animals.

Try it yourself! Get some pets other than cats for your dwarves to adopt.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My migrants have skills...
« on: April 09, 2010, 02:10:13 pm »

Just look at that screen shot. Two skills for weapons that dwarves can't make, and biting. No punching, wrestling, or kicking, just biting.

To top it all off, she's a high master miller. So that means she can turn wheat into flour at lightning speed, I guess.

So what weird skills do your migrants have?

DF General Discussion / Non-generic statues!
« on: July 15, 2009, 05:13:41 pm »
In case you haven't been keeping up with Toady's updates, generic statues are finally gone.

This is awesome. I can't wait to make themed rooms.  ;D

DF General Discussion / Digger digs too deep
« on: May 28, 2009, 11:29:44 pm »
Here's a unique look at digging too deep. I reminded me of some good discussion I read on the Suggestions board. Be sure to read at least to the shackle's inscription to get the full impact.

http://www.diggercomic.com/?p=243

Ursula Vernon is awesome. I'm starting to wonder if she's a DF fan. The main character of Digger is very dwarf-like, and she draws some little lizards that look a lot like the Cutebold sketches that show up from time to time.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Cakelie: there's science to do!
« on: May 19, 2009, 02:16:34 pm »
I have a persistent urge to make a fortress called "Cakelie" and blog the results in character as GLaDOS. Is this awesome? Y/N?

If I decide to do it, I'll do the Biodome-style, sealed fortress. Feel free to offer suggestions on how to do this right.

DF Gameplay Questions / Pumping out a hole in an aquifer
« on: May 08, 2009, 01:43:46 am »
I've never done it before, and I thought I was doing it right.

Twelve pumps, powered by four windmills, to empty out a 3x3 area. The water was pumped back into the aquifer, though a trench around the outside of the ring of pumps. Then I dug out a single staircase, and surrounded it with wooden walls. Then, I took a deep breath, and broke into the layer below.

It worked at first. There was a tiny amount of water that had been trapped in the stairs at the center, but that was all. I was distracted for a moment by some merchants or something. When I check in on my project, the few squares I had mined were completely filled.

I went to the wiki to see where I went wrong, and apparently I did everything right. I was up all last night trying to figure this out. Could the stairway itself be producing water?

Help me, forum-goers. How do I get through this damn aquifer?
