DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Basic Questions: Rivers and Beasts

Howdy,

I can't seem to cross rivers with out traveling with shift T. Tried alt direction but this did nothing when I selected going into the brook. Interestingly I could fling myself into the abys if I traveled north a bit putting me into the river but severly hurt and then unable to get back up. So how do I cross rivers?

Also I cant seem to find any wildlife or things to kill/be killed by, are they not common in .16?

If anyone can point me to a Adventure mode guide Id be thankful since google has failed me.

G'day, I've never really done the whole hunting for meat thing in my fortress (always just fishing and farming) and would like to give it a go. I would like to know how you guys set up your butchery and leatherworking chain.
I come across a few issues including:
- setting up a stockpile to accept corpses which are butcherable since the corpses category is massive and dosn;t differentiate between butcherable and on butcherable.
- Do I need to allow the collection of refuse outside for hunters to return corpses?
- Is there something I should do about bones as well?
Also some examples of your physical setup would be appreciated.

DF Bug Reports / 40a: Cat killing vermin in chasm

Gday,

Found a nice location with magma, chasm underground pond/river and sand. However my cat is heading over to the chasm where the local ratman and mole population is and killing vermine, now my dwarves are gathering the refuse even with ignore outside refuse order on.

So the bug is: Chasm count as indoors for refuse gathering.

In the release notes it says:

Release notes for 0.28.181.39d:
(*) added init options/world parameters to show map features during embark

Where is this? I cant find it in the init files. What do I do?

Is there anyway to clear the corpse list? I have a chasm a undergorund river and several Giant Cave Spiders so the list is already 2 pages long after the first year.

If there isnt a way to get rid of corpses listed will they aventuallt drop off the list. Im sure most of the bodies have decayed and disapered.

*edit* I thought Id save space and ask anouther question in the same post. Im selecting in a pocket world a 2x5 embark area(2 up down 5 left right). When I arrive the world seems more vertical then horizontal. I put this down to the tiles size. However since the magma vent I was searching for was on the very edge of the embark and I couldnt find it on this map I decided to abandon the fortress to see the reclaim site as a 5x3 (5 up down 3 left right) area. Also curiously a big zone of some other species settlement depicted next to it with the symbol dwarf fortress uses for stone.

Anyway the question: Does dwarf fortress change my embark area if it dosnt like it? and if it dosnt whats with the different covering area for the reclaim site?

DF Gameplay Questions / Why wont it collapse?

Gday,

Ive got a problem, my liason and caravan are stubbornly spawning on an inaccesiable (previously accesible but channeled off) ledge with a bronze colossus on the other side.

Now Ive tried building a staircase to them but as soon as I breach the upper crust the colossus strikes (doors where bloody useless here). Instead I tried to mine out a bit underneath a choke point on the ledge to try and make it collapse to bar the colossi allowing me to rescue the now starving liason (caravan left).

Heres the question: How bloody big do I need to get to make a collapse. i tried the stock standard 10x10 which people have said should make it collapse with no avail when teh supports where pulled nothing happened. Now ive just been enlarging and enlarging not caring who dies but it STILL wont collapse.

DF Gameplay Questions / Underground rivers - How do I deal with them?

Gday Ive taken a seed from http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=19954.0 and Im told it has an underground river. Ive got a few questions so I know how to deal with it without wiping out my fortress.

So here goes:
1) If I order criss crossing mines throughout the map will the wet tile warning stop me from crashing right through the wall and flooding my fortress or getting overun by agro critters

2) If I have a problem with 1 what are the better ways to locate the river without a slaughter. No cheating please.

3) Once located if I channel a square from above into the river will creatures jump up into the channel and invade the fort?

4) Can marks dwarves snipe river critters through fortification set above the discovered underground river?

DF Modding / Finding magma on embark not on the map.

Gday, Im kind of confused.

Ive been looking for a good  magma pipe less elevated position for a fortress game that I dont want to slow down. I got a duel core with 2 2.1's but for some reason it Still slows down alot when I get large elevation or alot of critters.

Anyway Ive been reading around and as far as I can see the only utility for this is the reveal function in tweak. however from the said reading it says this reveal themagma on the map not the world emark screen. Since I dont want to reveal magma on the map but to discover its exact position.. how do I get the embark revealed and not the map revealed?

Advice is appreciated.

DF Gameplay Questions / Gems gems where for art thou gems.

Howdy,

Im in a desert/semi arid fortress with a layer of clay followed by 3 layers of sand 2 of which are aquifers. I also have a volcano in the middle of the map going down all Z layers.

Ive got a possed dwarf in need of gems now in the start of my 3rd year I havnt struck a single gem along the way.

Heres the questions: 1) is there bad regions for gems and am I in it?

2) do feature such as volcanos or sand layers destroy gems deposits?

3) does the massive quantity of obsidian basicly taking up all the stone layers destroy the gem desposits (and while we are at it the iron desposits Im really after)?

Ive been digging long shallow trenches across the whole clay/sand layers in the hope of encountering one before the dwarf goes berko.

Help is appreciated.

DF Gameplay Questions / War dog - not war dog

Gday,

I set my only dog to be trained as a war dog. As far as I knew he was trained to be a war dog. However when I inspected him with 'v' I see the words: "This animal is waiting to be trained". I tried putting anouther train war dog request at the kennel only to be rebuffed that thier is no war trainable creature.

Whats going on? How do I get my dog to become a fully fledged wardog?

DF Gameplay Questions / Reclaim Issues

I want to do a partial reclaim, ie I want to access the lower portions of the map I abandoned last game to avoid slowdown. I want acess to the volcano there as well as it had water trees and a volcano and I didnt cheat to find it.

My computer was having issues with the extream elevation s of the original site.

Here my problem I cant embark in a selection including my old holdings. If I enter reclaim mode it wants me to reclaim and play the whole site. Does anyone know a solution to this?

or some way to destroy the reclamation zone so I can start again?

Any help is welcome.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My First Tradgey

Gooday folks,

Im preety new to Dwarf Fortress I got into it after seeing RPGenie's Dwarf Fortress breaks and ive been intermitedly playing and abanadoning fortresses.

I finally decided to go on the hard yakka of maintinaing a fort over the long period. Today is a black day in "HundredClapst" A month earlier a massive wave of immigrants arrived and I was not prepared after having a population of 14 all winter to be hit with 15 more immigrants was bad.

What was worse was as soon as a thresher arrived he was taken by a fey mood. I was more concerned with getting now waves beds and living holes and just threw up a few workshops I didnt have into a groove on my 3rd basement.

He never found what he wanted the poor devil he went mad and became enraged. Fortunatly my 4 recruits of the first military HundredClapst Brigade whom I hadnt worked out how to move where stationed in the dining room (lazy bastards).
They proceded to beat the living daylights out of the fey dwarf and I now have a red wall to commemorate the fate of the Illgotten weaver and his mood of I dont know what the heck.

Its a small tradgey but Its my first and I cant help get the feeling the dwarves are going to feel bad whenever they eat and watch the red wall of dwarf insanty.

BTW how do you move a military squad?

Gday Ive got a few questions concerning managing my military which goes beyound the 4 question faq in the wiki.

Firstly Ive read that dwarves on duty for long periods go insane. How long does this take? are there any signs? whats your recommeneded duty time?

Secondly will on duty dwarves feed/water themselves?

3rdly Is it possible to off duty my dwarves WITHOUT them fighting each other into unusability (ie dont spar guys)

4thly Ive assigned all the beds in my minds barracks. Will the dwaves relise this and only military dwarves sleep in the barracks? Civilians OUT!

Help is appreciated.
