DF Modding / Embarking anywhere in 43.05, possible yet?
« on: October 19, 2016, 01:53:46 pm »
DFHack seems stalled on 43.03.

Is there any utility or anything I could use to make it so that I can, for instance, embark on pure mountain tiles, or in the middle of a human town?

I recall people saying LNP and DFHack have utilities for this, and I remember back in the 40d days there was "EmbarkAnywhere", but I can't seem to find any of that for the current version.

Anyone know a definite answer?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarves are kind of boring now.
« on: October 17, 2016, 09:24:27 am »
No no, not the game in general.  It's still fun.

But the dwarves themselves have gotten dull.  They used to be kind of unpredictable and crazy, weird art/industry-obsessed crazy people who lived in holes and flipped out over the smallest issues.

Now they can watch their entire families get killed and eaten, but then just shrug and keep on making stone crafts.

What happened?  Is it the new emotion system?  Most of my dwarves have miles of "didn't feel anything seeing so-and-so die" and they just seem to be boring robots.

I don't need beds, different booze, a dining room, tables, chairs, anything.  They're perfectly fine being robots who collapse whenever they need a recharge and then go right back to doing emotionless work.

I miss tantrums and tantrum spirals and actual problems.  I rarely even get goblin sieges anymore.

Has the game gotten less fun as it has progressed, for other people?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Reclaim mode, shortage of dwarves
« on: July 01, 2012, 12:24:49 pm »
Does anyone else remember the old reclaim mode, where you'd start with like 80 well-armed and military-skilled dwarves with which to actually stand a chance retaking a fallen fort?

Is that possible to get now?  It seems like that's been removed in favor of having your standard seven die before they even get off the wagon.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Caravan going nuts
« on: June 30, 2012, 09:23:37 am »
You'd think caravans would be accustomed to dealing with attackers, given how often people get ambushed in adventure mode.

But no, this caravan is going nuts because they lost a couple wagons before my military could scramble.  Is this typical behavior?

I mean, I can understand the dwarven merchants, but their animals get melancholic/mad/berserk because they lost their riders?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Keas!
« on: June 21, 2012, 05:48:30 pm »
These birds are quite strong!

Is there any reasonable way to protect against these guys flying off with my stuff?  I mean I'm intending to do work outside, and somehow parrots keep swiping my wheelbarrows.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Migrants have no jobs
« on: February 18, 2012, 07:47:35 am »
Is this intended behavior?

Basically I had a 30-dwarf migrant wave a bit ago, which is nice in a way.  However, not one of them had any active jobs as they came on site.  In the previous version they'd be set to do whatever they were best at, at the very least.  Now they all just come in with varying skills and only peasant-level jobs active.

It's sort of a pain to have to pause and assign each dwarf that pops onto the screen as they do, just to get them to do the things they are good at.

DF Bug Reports / Teleporting !!goblin crap!!
« on: February 24, 2009, 12:00:17 pm »
Ok.  Bug is a little weird and I've never seen it before because I don't typically kill goblins this way.

In my current fort, I cagetrap a lot of goblins.  Once these goblins are caged, I have a room on the same level that has a magma faucet (from bauxite floodgates) directly above it.  I (b)uild the cages in that room, then dump magma on them.

The issue is that the magma catches the goblins' equipment on fire, and then it teleports to where they were cage trapped.   Picture follows:

As soon as the magma hits the goblins, their stuff ends up back at the traps, on fire and smoking.  Any idea what is going on there?

DF Bug Reports / [40d][Sparring] All dwarves end up Wrestling Champions
« on: November 29, 2008, 11:23:38 pm »
Ok, so I'm playing a 2x2 fort on a mountain/grassland biome.  That shouldn't matter, but I figured I'd mention it.

I've got maybe ten dwarves that were given weapons (random leftover goblin junk) to train with.  They are the whole of my military aside from a cadre of marksdwarves.  I gave them spears, hammers, axes, swords, whatever was left.

Ok, so they go and spar.  Thing is, they level wrestling more than anything else.  Yes, they have the weapons in their inventory, and they gained skill with them occasionally, but usually wrestling.

Eventually, they became champions (of wrestling) and tossed aside their weapons.

What's going on?  Am I missing something here?  Shouldn't they use a weapon if they are assigned that weapon, and thus train in that weapon?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Why I Reclaim Forts: A short picture book.
« on: October 20, 2008, 06:34:50 am »
Heh.  Ok, short history on this fort.  I posted a topic a while ago regarding my civ and it's elf-king.  This fort was made mountainhome and got the king, yadda yadda.  Of course I immediately became bored with it and abandoned.

Fine.

About five years have passed in the game world, as I screwed around with other forts and occasionally entered abandoned forts with adventurers.

Then, I reclaimed "ConjuredGates", my old mountainhome.

At this point, I'll just show a couple of pictures, with brief comments:

Troglodytes are everywhere!

Note that ten minutes after entering the fort, everyone is just about ready to kill everyone else.

The elven king's old chambers!  Now not fit for anyone.  Also: Down to something like 40 dwarves, from a starting 70, mostly from killing each other.

The bowels of the fort also contain dozens of dead.  Also down to something like 30 now.

Also, a full view of the fort's main level.  I figure it's worth looking at.  This is after (most) of the fighting was done.

And finally, a few days after the carnage, my stock screen (most corpses have rotted to bones):

This sort of place is why I play DF!  Haha, it's awesome.

As a final note, I don't expect my remaining nine (a few of which I believe are insane) to actually survive.  But still, hey, fun times.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My Dwarf Civ and it's Elven King
« on: October 14, 2008, 11:06:29 am »
Ok, first time ever, I made it to Mountainhome.  I look to see the king, and there it sits.  An E.  I have So-and-so-and-so-and-so, Elf King as my regent.

Well, fine, whatever.  That explains the elven liaison I kept getting.  However, the problem is that I can't seem to assign the guy the room I made for him.  He's just not on the list.  He's in the dining room just standing around, probably once his migrant status wears off he'll go crazy because his lessers have rooms while he does not.

I've assigned rooms during migrant status before.  What's up?

Edit:  Image.  Also, he's "Quick to anger".  I wonder how he felt walking past all the treestumps on the way to my fort.

Another edit:  Maybe he's the reason my group was named "The Frilly Boot".  Bloody elves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Duke Demands an "item in tomb"
« on: October 11, 2008, 09:15:05 am »
How do I satisfy this demand?  Normally demands are more akin to "Adamantine Table in Dining Room".

This is just "item in Tomb", lowercase and all.  I put a couple random furniture bits in there to see if that helped out, but no good.  Is this a problem?

Ok, here goes.

We've all played DF through and through.  We know how it goes.  Z-levels, roadless wagons, hills, valleys, endless farming, the whole works.

Ha!  No.  This game is using the last of the 2D versions.  That's right:  No z-levels!  Build roads if you want useful caravans!  No FPS higher than 50!  Reflood farms every year!  Flooding rivers!  Magma!  Demons!  Guild representatives!  Dangerous depths!

Anyway, rules are similar to Boatmurdered.  One week from the posting of the save for you to take your turn, or you are skipped.  We revert on unfixable issues, like world floods and massive tantrum spirals.  Feel free to steal ideas from places, hell, a lava cannon wouldn't really be a bad idea.  No cheaty crap like huge long bridges to kill demons, but you can magma the chasm if you want.

Also no mining Adamantine.  We are trying to survive here.

I'm taking names for starting.  Be aware that you only have a week to FINISH your turn once the previous guy finishes.  If that doesn't sound like something you can do, then don't sign up.   Also be aware that you need to not kill the fort.  Feel free to toss in your two cents on what sort of starting equipment we should take.

Notably, there has been a minor rule change due to skippage:
Also new rule:  You need to post an acknowledgment of your turn within three days of your turn starting.  That will help against wasting a week on a complete no-show.  Anyone who doesn't post at least "Ok, I've got the save now" or something akin to that will get skipped for no-show.

Something useful: http://archive.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Main_Page  That's the old wiki.

DF General Discussion / This is NOT A GOOD SIGN
« on: August 26, 2008, 07:34:54 pm »

I lost a fort to HFS.

I then ran in and lost an adventurer to HFS.

However, now I'm trying to reclaim.  However, whenever I try to reclaim that fort, I get a windows error.  One of those generic 'error report' windows that tells you jack all.

It does this every time.

Save file is here:  http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=439

Anyway, if you reclaim the last fort in the list, Edemiton, ("KeyHalls"), it blows up as soon as you press "e" on the reclaim fort selection screen.  Other forts in that world are reclaimable.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Made a barony and then a county a month later
« on: August 12, 2008, 07:02:51 pm »
Maybe not even a month.

Basically it's like the title says.  I was cruising along making things with 89 dwarves.  Baronness arrives with her entourage, ok fine.  I immediately assign her a pleasant room and tomb and la-dee-da.

Less than a month later, I get "Whatever and the surrounding lands have been made a county".  What?  Is that possible?  It hasn't even been a season.  Now the rooms suddenly aren't good enough for the nobles and bleeeeeegh.

Anyway has this happened to anyone else?
