DF Suggestions / Remove the minimap.
« on: January 18, 2010, 06:41:49 pm »
Just kill it. Does anyone even USE the minimap?

In case you don't know what it is, it's the thing on the right of the screen that you immediately get rid of with the tab key.

It's simply not useful except in the very beginning of the game if you lose track of your wagon, and it only hurts new players, really, with all of the silly extra stuff it shows.

I'd love to know an actual use for it, but right now it's simply a hindrance to me.

DF Community Games & Stories / The rush!
« on: November 03, 2008, 12:07:12 am »
I've had this one in my head for awhile, just thought I'd share it.

Kadol heard someone yelling loudly as she awoke. What was it? She got up, looking over at her cat in the corner of the room. It had spotted a baby snatcher two months before, and had been quite a celebrated feline for many years. For now, she slept. Kadol moved to her cabinet when she heard more yelling. What is it? She thought, moving toward the door. Suddenly, Bomrek burst through the door, an amazed look on his face, like a child before it receives its presents on its birthday.
"It's the miners! They have found something!"
Kadol thought fast. Now, it was important.
"In the south mines!"
Kadol was off, running out her door down the market district. people were running from their shops and dropping merchandise on the floor, running like mad. She ran past old Zaneg's cloth shop, where she often sat and talked to his customers. No one was there. She Ran fast past the forges, where her husband worked. He was one of the best weapon smiths in he world some thought, but that brief stint before his "Enlightenment" Where he nearly starved to death due to complete focus on finishing his prized battleaxe. No one even worked the forges now. As the halls narrowed, she heard the beating of footsteps against the ground. She briefly saw inside the kitchens and brewery, where the only sign of people nearby was the plates of food and barrels dropped on the ground as the cooks and brewers learned of the news. Had they discovered the metal that her husband had talked on and on about to her, and its mystical properties?
As she entered the mines, she saw a drunk hobbling forward, even he was trying to run. passing him as he tripped,(Most likely for the umpteenth time) she finally entered the huge, hollowed out space known as the souther mines. There was a huge group of dwarves huddled around a single point, two miners, with accomplished looks on their faces. She saw a hint of blue behind them.
"Ladies an gentledwarves, here is our grand discovery!"
"We have struck Microcline!"
The crowd fell silent. Then: a single voice.
"Armok damn it, Urist!"

DF Community Games & Stories / The great ocean fortress of Roughtender
« on: November 01, 2008, 09:10:58 pm »
This is the story of a fortress build almost entirely over the ocean. The only part not built over the water is the bedrooms and farms, which are cleverly dug into the ground nearby so that the only access into them is through the fortress. another part, not necessarily a part of the fort, is the mines, huge chasms dug into the rock. The magma nearby must have overflowed many years ago, and the solid rock in which we have dug possesses no aquifer.

Here is the view of the entrance to the fortress.

Here is the food storage/processing,barracks, and dining room.

Here is the main workshop and production level.

And here is the bedrooms and farms.(Take note that there are NO ways in from the outside, other than the staircase, which simply leads upwards to a walled off pathway that juts out from the fortress.

Obviously, this is a young fortress, and not much has happened yet. this will be a community fort, so you can pick characters and such. Just ask if a certain job exists. Currently though, all of the military consists of a bunch of wrestlers.

DF Suggestions / Forms of economy.
« on: August 01, 2008, 06:46:17 pm »
Yes, this, this will probably need to come in with or after the caravan arc is finished, but what if every civ had a different economy?

Dwarves:Capitalism (Like the current)
Humans:Feudalism (Dur)
Elves:Communism! (Seriously, fits right in with the elves)

Communist Cannibal Zerg Elves.
Awesome overload.

DF Suggestions / Realistic fortress mode embarking.
« on: July 20, 2008, 06:46:28 pm »
What I'm thinking of is merging Dwarf and adventure mode together.
You could,rather than: Start now!
 Or Choose carefully,
Search yourself.

In search yourself mode, What you do is be a person looking for people to settle the new land.
So, you go around a city and ask for people to come with you, perhaps hold a meeting in the town hall for all people who would like to come with you, then choose your seven?
You then go to a local food store and buy what you can from them, heading to each of the stores yourself to gather the goods. This could add some excellent depth to the beginning of fortress mode, and maybe even converge adventure and dwarf mode easily.

Discuss!

DF Suggestions / Dwarven Desperation
« on: July 06, 2008, 01:17:49 am »
Now, first of all, simply putting all your immigrants in a room and forbidding the door is quite an easy way to kill them.
Why don't they, while dieing of dehydration, say:

"Screw the rules , I'm getting some water!"

Because, the door isn't locked whatsoever. Just "Forbidden".

So? Make some locks!

Next, you know the poor soldier who got his foot mangled?
He stays in bed, dieing of dehydration.

Why doesn't he, in a total act of despairation, climb (Fall) out of bed and walk (Crawl painfully) to some water and food?! It is my understanding that dieing of dehydration or starvation are two of the worst ways to go, and two of the hardest at times!

Next:
Urist: So... hungry...
Bomrek: I...Know...
Urist: Need... foo-
Urist: Is... that... a... kitten?..
Bomrek:No...It's a... Juicy... steak...
Cilob:Not fluffy! NoOoO!

And finally:
Remember the Donner party?
Yeah.

So, I decided to make another adventurer, this time, I decided to be a dwarf.

The minute I start at the dwarven capitol, I'm spammed by messages of rat men and batmen and caveswallowmen attacking people!
When I find my way inside, I see a trail of destruction, corpses of dead chasm creatures. Then I see three peasants and a gaurd fighting a GCS. The peasants bit the dust first, but all that time, the gaurd had been smacking it with his steel battleaxe. The Gaurd then went down, and seconds later, the GCS died.
"Sweet!" I said grabbing th guard`s armor and weapons.
Then I examined the attack spam messages. The KING was under attack! Then the outpost liaison!
I the proceded to walk into a web and get torn to pieces by a spider.
Anyone experiance this before?
