DF Bug Reports / [40d] Dwarf Fortress won't run
« on: June 26, 2009, 04:59:32 pm »
When ever I try to run Dwarf Fortress (and this includes the versions preceding 40d) I get this generic, "dwarfort.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."  I've played it before on my system no problem, but it doesn't seem to want to run since I've reinstalled Windows XP recently.

I know my problem is vague, but I really don't know what kind of things I could provide that would be relevant.

At the very least, here is my system specs:
K8N-E Deluxe Asus MB
Athlon 64 2800+
2gb RAM
Radeon x1650

I just finished reading the Headshoots succession game and I was really hoping to get back into DF, thanks in advance.

DF Gameplay Questions / Filling a tower with water.
« on: January 15, 2009, 10:01:03 pm »
I need a find a way to bring a water from a brook upwards, I estimate about 10 z-levels, but I don't really have the materials to make a screw pump, or rather, I have never really used one before.  So would it work to have a brook channeled into a really tall tower and have it slowly climb all the way up?

DF Modding / Putting beds outdoors
« on: November 27, 2008, 02:42:33 am »
Being that it's Thanksgiving morning I decided to be bit adventurous and do something different, for me anyway, and build my entire fortress outside.  I suppose this is similar to the way human settlements do things, but I don't ever recall finding a bed anywhere in those places...

Anyway, I spent a good three hours building little homes with little wooden floors for my community only to find out that the hovels were still technically "outside" and now my dwarves have really no where to sleep...

Does anyone know of a way to mod DF so that I can create the quaint, farming-dwarf community of my dreams?

DF Gameplay Questions / Did I just botch my cave-in?
« on: August 01, 2008, 01:43:24 pm »

I created a channel completely around my fortress but I think I dicked it up by accidentally getting one square too close, as you can see in the middle by the Cinnabar stones and in another instance in the upper left region near the Alunite, so I guess that counts as an attachment and screws the cave-in, right?  I'm trying to remedy this problem by creating a 2nd branch the channel that circumvents that mistake simply by going around it, will that work?

Please tell I don't have to start over...

DF Gameplay Questions / Inaccessible areas?
« on: July 11, 2008, 11:48:19 am »
Another thread about pathing issues from me.  I can't seem to get anyone to leave my castle, despite having multiple exit points, any job I needed to be done outside is almost immediately canceled and all jobs around my fortress have to be suspended because my wood stockpiles are outside.  Since I'm still pretty new to the game, I've provided an image of my fortress at it's currents state, because if I was competent enough at this game to accurately explain my situation, I wouldn't have to ask other people how to get outside...

DF Gameplay Questions / Irrigation
« on: June 13, 2008, 02:03:00 pm »
With my last help thread clear from the first page, I feel comfortable making another.

Once again I pick the worst possible location to build a fort.  Elbow room is a luxury we can't afford since the available mountain space is almost small enough to fit on one screen, and on top of that, I seemed to have let the dog population get a little out of hand. (by the way, if you could tell me how to cage up and move my pets, I'd appreciated it)

So here's my problem, I had just finished furnishing my cramped living quarters and was in the process of digging out an area for workshops when I caught a glimpse of something queer, "29 Idlers? Ha! No fucking way..."  Fuck way, my friend.  I check my 10x8 dining hall, which is zoned as a meeting place, and it's filled to the brim with strange lay-abouts eating and drinking our food!  Goat corpses are strewn about the place and miasma is bellowing out of the kitchen!  Where as before we ate comfortably  relying on what ever the hunter managed to capture, we are now in a position where we simply cannot butcher puppies fast enough.

Of course..In my quest to find a solution to my problem, I run into another:

Just your typical reservoir, nothing too exciting, the room next to it with the lever actually has two of them in there, but one is blinking and the other isn't attached to anything, so I guess that hardly matters.

The dwarf there is just lying around doing nothing and no one else seems to be picking up the slack, I figured it must be because the floodgate is locking him in, and everyone else out, so I link the lever to the gate and have it pulled,(I honestly cannot tell when the floodgates are actually open), nothing!  I'm at a loss...

Anyway, much obliged to anyone who can over any help or advice.  I'd simply like to just finish my drowning chamber as soon as possible and get rid of all these damn foreigners and dogs running amok.

DF Gameplay Questions / Indoor stockpiles
« on: June 11, 2008, 07:36:00 pm »
I've just started to seriously play DF, before I would typically pick a nice looking place, which would usually leave me with bupkis stone-wise and nowhere to dig but down.  Only recently did it dawn on me to build into a mountain, which all works favorably until I try to bring my stockpiles indoors. Since I seem unable to place stockpiles over rocks (but quite capable of placing tables and chairs over them) I'd love to hear suggestions on how to quickly clean up indoor storage rooms.

This little problem has led me to abandon three fortresses and purposely flood/burn 4 others out of existence.  Destruction is fun, but I'd like to see what happens when my dwarves are alive long enough for their anvil arrive, so any help would be appreciated.
