Bomrek Stinthädalak is the newly minted Militia Command, just starting to get along with his band of warriors when the dragon Obraz Tusnunguslot Slusaangot, "Dimaondbrand the Luxurious Tax" arrives. Before his predecessor fell to an ambush of 12 goblin crossbowmen, the Sunletter's army had slain Ettin and Werepanthers. He has confidence in his men, and orders are given to draw the bridge and man the fort.
The first blast of magical fire obliterates all the guarding dogs and wildlife outside. Mere days ago the pastures had been finally walled in and connected with the fort internally, erecting the very walls which now shielded all livestock from the infernal waves.
At the time it is discovered that some idiotic misinterpretation of architectural designs had removed the upper part of the staircase into the tower, rendering the fortifications inaccessible. But a visiting scholar, now running for his dear life, though in the wrong direction, draws the dragon away from the fortress, giving the milita command time to respond.
By the time the scholar is roasted, the stairs have been reconstructed, the bridge drawn and the marksmen stationed inside the tower. Cut off from its target, the dragon rampages across the entire holdings of Sunletters fortress. Two visitors are huddled in the library, far away under the rock, while life of the civilians simply continues. As he watches all the lands of Sunletter's fortress turned into ashes, accompanied by the crash of falling trees, the milita command decides to withdraw his forces, leave the fortress locked up and let the dragon rampage outside. Given their goblin neighbors, some unfortunate raid is surely soon to come.
A cry of despair draws the militia command's attention. From the eastward mountains comes Melbil Tekkudzim, baron consort of Snakestome, alone and unarmed to visit the baroness. A mere month ago this political arrangement had been ordained, and Tosid Erithònul, baroness of Sunletters, can't possibly just stand by and let her consort be incinerated before they've ever even met.
With a sinking heart, the milita command gives in to the baroness' demands. In the full knowledge of inviting the doom of Sunletters fortress and every dwarf inside it, he orders the bridge let down. Its mighty clank echoes over the landscape.
Instantly the baron consort and dragon react. Again the scent of meat distracts the dragon, who catches the baron consort in a brave but short-lived duel. With a guilty sense of relief, the militia command gives the order to pull up the bridge, but the lightning fast beast is upon the fortress within the blink of an eye. A single blast of fire obliterates the bridge and everything within the entry hall, channeled all the way through and into the pastures, roasting a third of the livestock.
The true battle begins.
Ral Rîsenvosut, Elite Marksdwarf and Captain Commmand, is the first to arrive and the first to fall in the inferno, leaving only a singed bone to be retrieved for his funeral later. The militia command is scorched by the same blast, losing his warhammer of office, an heirloom to the fortress, along with his right hand. Lorbam Litattat, Axe Lord of his warband, rushes past the stunned commander, hacking furiously at the dragon.
The beast lashes out, charges and spitting blast after blast of fire, but Lorbam blocks and dodges like the legendary fighter that he is. The militia command struggles back to his feet and, yelling a mighty war cry, leaps on top of the dragon, biting into its skull and
latching on firmly.Outraged, the dragon shakes his head until the commander's teeth break off and he flies into the wall, while Lorbam keeps hacking at its hindquarters and lower back. The dragon attempts to divide his flurry of attacks between the two dwarfs, but both keep blocking and dodging every attack of the beast, all in midst of the burning wreckage of the entrance hall.
In the end, it is not the dragon that slays the militia command, but an unfortunate dodge into the inferno. Doused in boiling steel and iron, he is later found molten.
It is now one-on-one, Lorbam the Axe Lord against Obraz the dragon. In the madness of battle, Lorbam hacks at legs and body, blocking blasts of fire and dodging sweeps of attack. A mighty blow to the head stuns the beast, and again Lorbam hacks at the head. But the beast's hide and muscles are tough and won't give easily. Over and over again, at least a hundred times and more, the Axe lord smashes his axe into the dragon's head, until eventually, after what felt like hours, the wound crunches open and the beast is slain.
Heaving from the battle, Lorbam stands over his vanquished foe. The fires burn down and slowly the smoke clears. People come from the fortress, overawed by the mighty sight and shaken by the devastation and death around the fortress. Still, Lorbam just stands there, and the people behold the impossible: He is unscathed and unharmed.
At last, he raises his axe over his head. Booming, he announces: "I name thee Luzatigest!"
Thus the Siege of Obraz Diamondbrand is ended.
