Massive Quote from the RO2:HoS Fact Thread, Tripwire Forums. Warning. Ugly as hell.

I, for one, am most stoked about the first person cover system (true blind fire, peeling corners, ect) and the first person fully rendered tank interiors (and the ability to shoot out enemy vision blocks).

DF Suggestions / Brainstorming: Too Many "Farmer" Skills
« on: June 12, 2011, 08:45:25 am »
Right now it seems just about any skill involving plant processing is a "farmer" trade. I think it is worth some brainstorming to see if we can't shift a few skills into other categories.

Here's a few I've thought of;

Wood Burning: Currently a farming job, although the refining of logs into charcoal has nothing to do with food. I would place it under the Woodworker set (yellow), which follows since historically charcoal-makers cut their own trees in the wilderness, made charcoal in a huge dirt-covered mound, and carted the much lighter finished product back to civilization.

Potash Maker: Makes fertilizer, but also glass additives. One thing is certain though, nothing he makes is edible. I'd put him in woodworking like the charcoal maker, but craftsdwarf is also possible.

Soap Maker: Makes very inedible soap. Could possibly become a craftsdwarf or a woodworker.

Dyer: A craftsdwarf's job if I ever saw one. Directly related to cloth-making with quality modifier on his finished product, this job is much closer to clothier than the similar plant-processing brewer.

Butcher: Something of an odd suggestion, but has anyone considered that if the fisherdwarf and fish cleaner are both blue, why shouldn't the hunter and butcher both be green? For that matter, shearers and spinners might also fit under the same dark green animal caretaker field. Up for debate: milkers.

Anyone else want to contribute to the brainstorming?

Life Advice / Asperger's: A Poll.
« on: June 10, 2011, 01:24:50 am »
I'd never heard of this syndrome until after joining B12, and it seems to be growing more and more commonly admitted. So here's a private poll*, should the subject be sensitive to anyone, and a question...

What is Asperger's?

* And Spaceballs reference, which is not intended to be offensive in any way.

I am attempting to rework the iron industry for my mod. I seek to replace the generic iron with cast iron and wrought iron, replace generic steel with crucible and wootz styled steel (named steel and fine steel respectively), move ironworking reactions from the smelter to a new bloomery building, require said bloomery to use bricks and an anvil in construction, and move steelmaking reactions to a crucible building that consumes earthenware crucibles. I am not, however, very certain what is what in the raw files after the big materials update.

So to start, I'll need to fill out the new metals. Cast iron, wrought iron, primitive steel and wootz steel all need raw enteries. Have any other mods already covered this ground? If not, are the existing values in urists or some real-world figure?

I've searched the forums for this and found so many conflicting or partial answers I decided to bring human intelligence into the search. So if you recall a mod you've played with or conversations on the subject, now's a good time to put your memory to use.

And for those wondering, my final product will be ironworking that requires quite a bit more work than present. Various ores will go into the bloomery to create blooms. Another product of the bloomery will be cast iron, which my reading suggests was something of a waste product European metalworkers avoided creating rather than didn't actually know how to create. With hematite ore a small amount of hard steel will also be produced, similarly based on my reading.  The blooms will produce wrought iron when run back through the anvil-equipped bloomery in a second job, which will use the blacksmithing labor. Said wrought iron can be forged into weapons and armor or put through a furnace, where wrought iron, charcoal and flux create hard steel while cast iron, wrought iron and flux create fine steel. In the end, fine steel will have the best weapon characteristics while hard steel will be best for armor and also be required for anvils. Wrought iron will be good for general tools and basic armor, and cast iron will be... well, there's always frying pans and statues to make.

General Discussion / What just happened?
« on: April 20, 2011, 01:52:10 pm »
I keep spotting references to a dramagasm, but have no idea what occured. I see some people have gotten banned, however. If someone could shoot me a PM detailing what happened I'd appreciate it, particularly if I get one pro-ban person and one pro-freedom (see what I did there) person. Any discussion in this thread should be exceedingly well-mannered, non-judgmental, and written like a court stenographer on horse tranquilizers.

General Discussion / Jared Lee Loughner Was Completely Insane
« on: January 10, 2011, 03:58:48 pm »
... and thus speculating as to his political affiliations in an attempt to paint one party as responsible for his actions is entirely a cynical exercise in exploiting tradgedy for a fallacious rhetorical argument. There was no more influence upon his man and Glenn Beck or Sarah Palin than upon John Hinckley Jr. by Jodie Foster.

To support the notion he is insane, here is a link to his Youtube manifestos on mind control.

Can we please stop taking cheap shots now?

To all my friends at B12, even the sourheads, enjoy your celebration of Christ's birth or the Catholic patron saint of children and merchants. Or if you're Jewish, enjoy a day off from work...

Oh wait, its Saturday. You got this day off anyway and probably have to go to synagogue.

Well enjoy the very light traffic!

General Discussion / Am I a Bad Father?
« on: December 01, 2010, 05:02:14 pm »
I've got my six-month old son in the swing watching The Thin Red Line, a movie about WWII's pacific theater.

He's incredibly content to just sit there and isn't fussing at all, which he usually does. But he's watching violence.

By six months, can his eyes effectively focus and process images a good ten feet away? Or is it all bright colors and loud and exciting noises to him?

Needless to say, it might be best for the wife to not know about this.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How Many Fortresses Do You Build In One World?

I'm curious if I'm in the minority being someone who just makes forts until one "sticks", plays it up, then makes a new world rather than use the persistant universe features.
