Forum Games and Roleplaying / Welcome to Alpha Complex, Citizen! Paranoia XP
« on: September 13, 2010, 03:26:37 pm »
I've really been enjoying these forum games where everybody takes one character and makes suggestions for what he should do. I've also wanted to run a game of Paranoia on the forums. So I'm mashing the two of them together.

Here's what we're going to do. I'm going to post a sign-up sheet below. Your job is to fill out the requested information. Once we have several entries, I'll put up a poll and we'll figure out which character we want to use. At that point we'll determine the more gamey parts, like skill levels and such.

Don't feel discouraged if your character doesn't become the main character. I intend to use as many of them as possible, as NPCs. So go nuts!  :D

What is Paranoia?
I'm putting this here because it's possible some of you don't know what Paranoia is.

So, how about them signups!? Copy this into your post, and fill in the blanks provided:

Other Games / Demon's Souls
« on: August 25, 2010, 02:15:56 am »
Three months ago my brother told me about a little game that was recently imported from Japan. According to him, you fought Demon's, used Souls as currency, could upgrade you character however you want, and your weapons could be improved through crafting.

I was rather excited.

The Game was Demon's Souls.

I rented it. I sucked. Bad. I ragequit.

Then I found the Demon's Souls LP on SA, and watched several of the videos.

Tonight, I have a copy of the game. I just finished world 1-1. Here is what I currently possess, I have not yet spent souls on improving the character:

Starting Package: Temple Knight

Vit: 11
Int: 8
End: 13
Str: 14
Dex: 12
Mag: 6
Fai: 13
Lck: 7

Soul Level: 4
Available Souls: 4474

Weapons:
Bastard Sword
Mail Breaker (I have a shit-ton of these. It just kept giving me them as random drops.)
Winged Spear
Halberd
Light Crossbow
Broken Sword (Crap, in storage)

Shields:
Slave's Shield (Also crap, in storage)
Soldier's Shield (Also also crap, three in storage)
Heater Shield

Armor:
Midan Helmet (In storage, prevents me from fast-rolling if I wear it)
Old Ragged Robes (Ditto, not as nice as the Temple Knight starting armor (probably lighter though))
Mirdan Scale Mail (Wearing)
Old Ragged Gloves (See above notes)
Mirdan Gloves (Also see above)
Old Ragged Boots (Also also see above)
Mirdan Leggings (This joke is too old)

Rings:
Thief's Ring (In storage. Perhaps I should switch it for)
Herculean Strength (Because item weight isn't a problem right now. Equipped)
Cling Ring (Currently equipped, but I do have a body now.)

I cleaned out 1-1 pretty good, I think. I didn't have pure white tendency (of course), so I couldn't get to that area, and I left the dragons alone, so I did miss some items there. But I think I did pretty well.

I did try to take out mister Red-Eyes knight. Couldn't kill him (got REALLY close), but I did get the Hero's soul back there... for the price of 4,000 souls. Yeah. He killed me before I could touch my bloodstain from the previous death. I lost 10x what the item was worth. DEMON'S SOULS!!!!  >:( *shakes fist*

Anyway, any advice on what to spend my souls on? I have no idea what to upgrade. I also have 6 Hardstone and 5 Sharpstone, which I could use on my weapons. I'm interested in a melee focused build, the only miracle I care about right now is the one that takes me back to the Nexus with my Soul's (screw you Nexial Binding, just screw you), I have no interest in magic (I'll save that for a magic focused challenge run (with a Royal character)).

Oh, and let's discuss the hell out of this game. I did run a search for Demon's Souls, but I didn't see a thread focused entirely on it.

Other Games / Gundam? RP? What is this!?
« on: August 05, 2010, 05:15:22 pm »
Pretty interesting roleplaying session going on play-by-post style on the Something Awful Forums. You can get to it from here: CLICK ME!!!

If you're a fan of Gundam (and are familiar with the earlier Amuro and Char based plot-lines) this should be something of a treat for you. The writing is actually pretty good, or at least up to the usual Gundam quality for dialog. The plot is working well, and as of at least a quarter of the way through, the GM has shown the he won't pull a punch if the situation calls for one.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it and I figured some of you guys might as well. Let me know if I should put this thread somewhere else though; I wasn't sure where to stick it.  :D

Other Games / Another Shockwave/Flash Player Question
« on: August 03, 2010, 06:00:09 pm »
For some reason, I seem to be utterly incapable of retaining any saved data, when saving from a game being run by Shockwave or Flashplayer. This is rather annoying, since there are some games that I would like to be able to play on my laptop, over a period of time, yet though it appears to save the file (where, of course, is another matter entirely), and I can load a saved file, a soon as the computer is reset (actually rebooted, or just turned off and back on, my save files are wiped out.

I have adjusted flash player from within the program to use as much space as it needs to save, and that setting doesn't change between reboots.

Any ideas guys? I'd really like to fix this. It works on my desktop, but not the laptop. Both are running the same version of Windows XP.

*Edit* Okay, I figured out where it is saving to: C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\RandomNumbersLetters\localhost\Documents and Settings\My Name\Muy Documents\Video Games\GameName\GameName

Zombie Jesus Christ, Mary and Joseph on pogo stick that is one long fucking extension.

Too bad I still don't know why data is getting wiped every time I turn the system off. :(

At least now I could theoretically save the data elsewhere, and manually move it when I want to play.

Someone please save me from THAT pain in the ass. D8

Play With Your Buddies / The Let's Play Suggestions Thread
« on: July 26, 2010, 11:32:17 am »
We've got some pretty good LPers, and some pretty good LP's on this forum. I thought it might be a good idea to start a request thread for LPs.

You make the requests, I'll throw 'em into this first post, and keep track of which ones have started and link to them.

Try to make the request be for games that are simple to acquire. By that I mean Steam, Abandonia, freeware games, etc. As with all Bay12 Games threads, piracy discussions won't be tolerated. Don't be the dick that gets this thread closed!

Suggested Games
- Princess Maker 2 (Get the game here.)
- Wizardry VI,VII (Get Them there.) (Try to run the same party through both games!)
- Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
- Roller Coaster Tycoon
- Zoo Tycoon
- Grand Theft Auto I & II (Get 'em here!)

Selected In Progress/Completed LPs
- X-Com, UFO Unknown (By cganya, Find it here.)
- Aquaria (By Myroc, Find it here.) (Warning: Huge Images Are Huge) (IT LIVES!! New, HUGE, update! Enjoy!)
- Liberal (Community) Crime Squad (By Grimith, Find it here.) (Completed!)

Other Games / Munchkin
« on: May 28, 2010, 02:17:36 pm »
Okay, so it's not a video game, but it is a game.

For those of you who don't know, Munchkin is a card game produced by Steve Jackson Games. There are many variations, but the basic principles remain the same; murder, lie, bribe, cheat, extort and generally screw-over your fellow players in your pursuit for loot, power, and character level 10. (Or 20.) The rules are often contradictory, intentionally vague, and prone to inducing shouting matches and thrown snacks.

It. Is. Glorious.

As I have a new group to play it with (and having half the available expansions has given me a crap load of cards) I'm working on a rule set to take the game to level 30. Card and rules suggestions welcome, I'll post what I have so far later.

So. Anybody else love this game?

DF Suggestions / Washtubs
« on: April 04, 2010, 09:58:56 pm »
See this thread. Now that dwarves will clean themselves off, they tend to do it at the most convenient water source.

Which, unfortunately, tends to be the local well. And they're pretty messy about it. If we're going to have dwarves cleaning, we may as well give them something to clean with.

Hence, the washtub. Placing a washtub should ask you to define a washroom, a location dwarves will automatically try to go to when they feel the need to clean. We should be able to assign them to individual dwarves, as well as set them up as comunal bathing areas. Communal bathing should probably give a negative thought to modest dwarves, while more exhibisionist dwarves should get a neutral or happy thought. (Pervert dwarves should get an "admired a fine piece of dwarven engineering" if there's another dwarf bathing, perhaps?  ;D )

Anyway, that's all I got. I'm thinking tub, bucket and soap should be required materials to build one, and they need access to a water source.

Discuss.

DF General Discussion / RAW typos and missing tags
« on: April 04, 2010, 08:51:48 am »
Let's compile a list of typo's and missing tags that we have found in the raws. Once we've gone through all the text files I'll put the full list in the bug reports section for Toady.

Here's what I've got so far:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

File name is listed first, followed by what was found. Please try to follow the same pattern when you put ones you find up, that way I can copy-pasta it directly in. On the ones marked "- None found" please feel free to give those another look over as well. I have no doubt I could have missed something. The new RAWs are huge!

Anyway, this will make it easier for Toady to fix this stuff. Let's get to it!

EDIT: Now in spoiler tags instead of code. The scrolling was annoying me.

Thanks go to:
- shadow_slicer
- Trorbes
- Sphalerite
- Knight Otu
- Iban
- Strange guy

This is turning out really good. Keep up the good work guys!

Other Games / WTF happened to my Flash Games!?
« on: January 09, 2010, 10:40:07 am »
So today, I found some new Flash games that I thought were fun, so I saved them to my computer as shockwave flash objects. I have several of them already, and I previously had been able to run them in the firefox browser, so as to play them full screen.

My flash player upgraded itself to flash 7 today, and suddenly it doesn't let me do that anymore. Opening the flash object in firefox merely asks me what program I want to use to run it. And telling it to use Macromedia flash player 7 (r14) makes it open a new window, where it proceeds to run like shit, or depending on the game, not at all.

Anybody have any idea how I can either make firefox run the damn game in the browser (without having to be online, which was the point of downloading the games in the first place), or how to roll back the player to the version that actually fecking worked?

General Discussion / My Wife's Laptop is driving me STARK RAVING MAD!
« on: January 02, 2010, 07:58:00 pm »
My wife has a refurbished Dell Inspiron B120 that we bought her several years back.

Two months ago, it simply refused to turn on. At first I thought it was an outlet/non-charging battery issue, but testing killed that theory right away. I checked the fan, and smelled the system to make sure nothing had burned up. No smell. Self-assured that, at that point, nothing I could do could possibly make the situation worse, I unscrewed the back cover and removed the hard-drive.

Not sure why I did that, maybe I thought it would harm the computer somehow, and figured that if it was so intent on death, then it would die by my hand. Anyway, I put the hard-drive back in, flipped the sucker over, and pressed the power button.

It turned on.  ??? WTF.

The wife was pleased, and I made up some crap about logic errors and flushing the memory. She bought it, and my place as tech-god was once again assured.

Fast-foreward to today. This morning, I got a call from wifey telling me that her keyboard wasn't working. When I got home and had time to check it, the computer really wasn't receiving any input from the keyboard at all, and none of the lights were lit up. I checked the keyboard stuff in the control panel, where the system cheerfully informed me that the "device is working properly, boss". Bullshit. I tried to update the nine year-old drivers. Guess what? Apparently you can't improve perfection. No updates. I attempted to troubleshoot it. I'm never using that worthless troubleshooting program again.  >:( Finally, I tried plugging in a USB keyboard. That keyboard would work, but the built in one remained borked.

Left with no other option, I decided to try the hard drive again. Everything I know about computers tells me !!DO NOT TOUCH THE HARD-DRIVE, COMPUTERS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!!, but I figured, what the hell?

I didn't expect it to frigging work!!!

So, could anybody techy please explain, if possible, why the hell that worked? ???

Other Games / Fallout 2 + Restoration Project = Win
« on: December 31, 2009, 12:30:02 pm »
I did precisely two things yesterday; take care of my almost two week-old daughter, and play Fallout 2 with the Restoration Project mod.

The mod is available here, with both manual and automatic installation versions.

I've played Fallout 2 to death, but always quit early because I got bored. Not so with this mod. It almost seems like a brand new game. And it starts right out of Arroyo.

Two steps into your journey, you run into another Tribal. His name is Kaga, and he's pissed . Basically, he was you, several months earlier. Got named the Chosen One, passed the Temple of Trials, and left to save the village. Only when he got out there, he discovered a whole world for the taking. Drugs, slaves, raiding; he saw lots of ways his simple village could easily improve their lot, without the need for a GECK. So he went back to tell the others.

They were not amused. They exiled him, and made you Chosen in his place. So now he's decided that he's going to watch the village die. Which means you have to die first.

Basically, he acts as a mini-boss. Every couple of levels you gain, he pops up as a random encounter. He rants at you a bit, and then tries to kill you. All you need do is wack him a few times, and he runs off. Of course, his level scales with yours, and he improves his equipment. The first encounter he's unarmored and wielding a spear (just like you), but by the second he's got a leather jacket and a shotgun(!).

Another thing the mod does is slow travel time down. This has two effects; it makes the map screen seem a lot more important (you'll be spending more time in there), and it seems to have tripled the number of encounters you get. Plus, if you get anywhere near Navarro, you're going to run into Enclave patrols. And they will murder you. Easily. It's still possible to do the San Fran -> Navarro Power Armor and Verti-bird plans run (I managed it), it just takes a lot longer. (Plus, I savescummed the crap out of it. Move 1 or 2 squares, enter map and save. Repeat. Reload when they nuke you.)

This mod added a lot of other stuff too. For example, it's now actually possible to find Sulik's village, find the Slaver's main camp, and, oh yeah, free his frigging sister! That little plot thread, which for years languished forgotten from a single line after you picked him up, finally gets resolved. And there's other missing things that got fixed. Remember that conversation with a certain enclave trooper you can get in the Gecko Power Plant? The one where he tell you he's sending a squad with a Verti-bird to kill you, but it never actually happens? Guess what happens now!  ;D

Speaking of your companions, they also added brand spanking new images for them, so if you equip them with armor, their appearance actually changes. And not just to the Chosen One's looks, they have their own. Sulik in regular Power Armor is pretty rad, as he goes un-helmeted and has painted some tribal swirls on the shoulder pads. I was tempted to see what he'd do with the Enclave Power Armor, but he'd never give it back.  :D

There's a hell of a lot more to the mod than just this, but...
TL;DR, If you play Fallout 2, you need this mod. Get it, now.

Other Games / Yet Another ADOM Thread (YAAT)
« on: December 23, 2009, 09:16:07 pm »
The very first Roguelike I played was not Rogue, nor was it Nethack, nor was it Angband, or any of the other often silly iterations of that game.

No, no, my first Roguelike was ADOM.

It was also nearly my last, but I persevered.

Anyway, I used to run it on an Windows ME PC. I have a version on my XP Laptop (the DOS version, I think) and it is kind of error prone. I uses up a crap load of memory, then crashes. I just downloaded the beta4 windows version, and though I get a window to pop up, it sits at a black screen and does nothing else.

What can I do to get this thing running again? I wanna starve me some more characters! Obviously there is a way to make these work, since we had that bloodline game going a few months back.

Any help?

General Discussion / Mr & Mrs Rick Void have created a Masterpiece!
« on: December 21, 2009, 03:49:37 pm »
My daughter was born Friday, 12/18/09, at 3:26 pm, CST.

She had to be delivered c-section, as the cord was around her neck. Outside of that, she is absolutely perfect in every way. She was born 7lbs, 6.4 oz, and is almost 20" long. She's a pretty good-sized infant. She's been eating really good too (about 2 oz every two to three hours). We're coming up on four hours since her last feeding, so hopefully she's starting to slow that down a bit.

I am a very proud daddy, and thought I would take the opportunity to share that with our little community here.

Other Games / Paranoia Online
« on: September 06, 2009, 04:08:08 pm »
So I've got a Paranoia game that we need more players for. It's online, right now.

All you've gotta do is install JParanoia (check www.paranoia-live.net) and run the .exe. Press connection, then connect. Pick a name, then type 99 and press enter to join as an observer. All will be explained from there.

Whew.

edit: Goddamn website...

Other Games / TOME (Troubles of Middle Earth)
« on: August 19, 2009, 03:56:18 pm »
Okay, so the only immediate thread I saw for this is from over a year ago, and didn't go very far. So let's try again.

TOME is a Roguelike based on Tolkein's works about the world of Arda, known more commonly as Middle Earth. The designers went out of their way to be faithful to the mythos, while making a fun and highly playable game.

There are 22 races in TOME. Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and Hobbits (Halflings) make the required appearance, but so do Ent's, Trolls, Half-Ogres, Kobolds, Orcs, and even an evil sentient fungus: the Deathmold. Seriously.

Once you've got race and gender down, you can then pick what type of member of your race you are. The choices;
Classical (No changes to base race)
Lost Soul (Starts in a dungeon, at a ridiculously low depth, and you are expected to fight your way out, past horribly over-leveled monsters. If you do make it out, the game plays the same as for other players, but you keep whatever levels and equipment you gained on the way up. Insane)
Vampire (Blood-drinking, Light weakness, Dark resistance, little to no nutrition from regular food)
Spectre (No-clip Mode, basically. Though you do take minor damage while passing through solid objects)
Skeleton (Resistance to pointy things, MP penalty)
Zombie (Slow and dumb is a zombie)
Hermit (lower HP, higher MP and magic skills).

After all that, you finally get to pick a class. You've got everything from weapon-swingers to priests to mages to thieves to symbiotes to possessors to- I think you get the point.

I found this game several months ago, got frustrated by the learning curve and lack of documentation (The Wiki is okay, but could be lots better) , so I put it away and forgot about it until about a month ago when I got bored and needed something to do. Now it's way fun!

I'm currently running Kain and Raziel (of the Legacy of Kain Playstation series) through the dungeons. Kain is a Vampire Dunedane Mindcrafter (that doesn't pray to his god or do any of the god quests, because he's Kain.) and Raziel is a Specter Dunedane Mindcrafter of Morgoth (Morgoth is the real "Bad Guy" of the Middle Earth story. I felt that was appropriate for Raziel, what with the Elder God yelling in his head all the time.  ;D)

Anybody else still play this?
