General Discussion / Woodhaven Semi-RPG Discord Project
« on: December 15, 2020, 08:35:46 am »
Hi guys!

I wasn't entirely sure where to put this, but I have started up a semi-RPG discord project called Woodhaven. It's a community at the least, good humour at best, and a gambling problem at the most! I'm still adding bits to it, but profiles and rpg/economy system bots are in. I'll be looking to tune in on the roleplaying bits next.

The basic idea is to treat channels like buildings/areas, where some are private dwellings, and others are public purposes. The owners have full rights to the channel. I'd also like to get some type of democratic/political system in for voting in leaders and the like!

Over the years I've known Bay12ers to be super opened minded folk. You're dwarves at best with your curiosity for the machina, so I'd love it if you'd drop in and check it out!

The next boat to Woodhaven is loading up, with the boatswain preparing to pull away the boarding plank. He locks gaze with you in your hesitance...

No obligation commitment, though your statutory standings with me may be affected.

Snips below :)

Creative Projects / [Open Alpha] Project Keira
« on: September 26, 2016, 03:39:28 am »
Howdy All,

So after 250-something days of working on this, I've figured it's time to open it up for a bit of testing.

It's still very new - there's not much content or graphics implemented, but it's generally quite moddable in regards to the data.

Project Keira is, well in Bay12 terms and on summary, Adventure Mode of Dwarf Fortress. It's form-based on VB.Net and just a hobby-project of mine. I'd love to get some feedback from Bay12 on it - especially the modding side of it, I'm not sure what the data files are capable of just yet.

To quote a description from another forum I posted on, here's the Introduction, really.

Anyway, you can download the latest version here.

Edit; Random screenshot from earlier test-play. :)

General Discussion / Discussion: Materials and their magical properties?
« on: August 26, 2016, 05:48:56 am »
Hi all! Long time no see!

Long story short I'm now a trainee Civil Engineer and I seem to be making waves at my company, as they're funding me through College. I need to make a big splash with the highest grades.

I've downloaded, printed and am currently going through the subjects, one of which is called "Science and Materials in construction and the Built Environment"... and I thought; I wonder where and who I know that would know such microscopic, vague knowledge?

Introducing; Bay12. So I figured I'd open up discussion on materials and their properties - it's an interesting topic for those interested, educational to all, and something I can parasite my butt off of.

So... Discuss; What are the best materials for conducting heat and electricity? What are the strongest yet most flexible materials? Which materials best dissuade the passing of liquids, sounds, radiation, so forth?

Also as a footnote, I hope to any previous acquaintances of Bay12 to me, whom pop their head through the door of this topic in passing interest, you are doing very finely.

Much adoration and everlasting friendship,

Azkanan

General Discussion / How many lives have you destroyed with DF?
« on: January 01, 2016, 07:13:37 am »
So I wanted to share my latest infliction, and it made me wonder; how many lives have you destroyed improved greatly by introducing them to Dwarf Fortress?

I mean, I think this was a pretty typical case for me...

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Game slow-down
« on: December 31, 2015, 08:23:58 am »
Howdy all,

Not sure if this is a bug, or if there's a work-around I'm not aware of.

When playing Adventure mode, it will suddenly cease to run -- or moreso, it will slow down to about 1 frame per 20-40 seconds. You can see the "Facing Directional Arrow" change sometimes, if you watch real closely. You can also move, but it's best to make a coffee whilst you wait for the movement to happen.

If you click a couple of times, it whites out -- but eventually comes back when it's ready.

It's happened twice in two games yesterday; once where my 3-hour run crashed (no save*) whilst I was idling in my new claimed hamlet, and again when wandering through a dark fortress.

*Also, tips on "autosaving", beside saving and re-entering the game, if possible?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / [RESOLVED] Woodcutters won't pick up Axes?
« on: December 28, 2015, 10:34:52 am »
So, I had woodcutters, and they cut a lot of wood. Then they all died. Their axes were dropped with the rest of their clothes (decay death \o/).

I've now moved my axes to a weapons stockpiled, not forbidden, and set dwarves to woodcutting only - but they won't pick up the bloody axes. This is irritating as I'm playing an overworld fortress, made of - yup - wood. And I've run out of lumber. Help?

OOC Thread

Character Sheets, Rule Book, etc

Introduction
You are a band of like-minded adventurers whom have banded together what credit you have to purchase a small ship. It's not much, but it's enough to get off of this rock.

Choose a system for deciding together, plan and pick your adventures and grow - in skill, in person, in wealth, in reputation - and possibly; in infamy.

Gamestyle
- Dungeons and Dragons -like, but evidently Sci-Fi.
- Utter freedom; stick to your ship or ditch it for a base, or both. Build, craft, commission, adventure.
- Free-flow roleplaying, with GM reactions/information input where and as required.
- Turn-based combat with supporting top-down mapping.

Players
There will be a maximum of six players. Post your character sheet and you will be Veto'd. This is first come-first serve by post, with consideration to acceptance.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Clash of Empires
« on: September 21, 2015, 04:13:57 pm »

Okay so, went a little too mechanical with the previous attempt with Clash of Empires. As such, with this one, it'll be far more fluid.

Premise
You're a prospective tribal leader in a land full of tribes, in a fantasy setting. You start out with a traveling band of nomads - keep moving, or settle. It's up to you. From there you can take your burgeoning settlement in any direction you wish - start building a motte and bailey and to follow an empire, ally with the orcs and goblins, seek the strength of a dragon through worship, raise the dead, summon a demon, whatever. Knock yourselves out... just make it make sense. You're a human/elf/other typical mystical creature with a likewise band of peoples. Work with it.

Gameplay
Roleplay, roleplay, roleplay. There are little constraints. You will have figures in the sense of populations and standing armies, but it's down to you to roleplay your nation in a freeform gameplay. ie, you can post as much as you like with other players. To each decision you make, you highlight it to the GameMaster who puts it through the magical mysterious machine, which spits out a result. Continue play.

Time and "turns"
Time progresses in regards to real-time; a season will pass after 7 days. You will get an main update on your civilization at the end of each season (I'll try to keep to this as best I can), though you will also get "mini-updates", most likely results from actions, after actions.

Player Qualifications
Considering the intensity of the game, there'll be requirements to get in-game so as not to, no offence meant, reduce, ruin or undermine the gameplay of others. Please only join in if you intend to put thought and development into this, rather than trying to "win".

How to Join
Character name.
Tribe name.
Tribe colour.
Describe your flag to me.
Tell me about your peoples. Who are they? Where did they come from? What brought them here? What do they value? Do they have any ongoing feuds, alliances or related-by-blood/marriage tribes? Do they suffer from creature attacks, a disease, an unknown traitor?
Slightly meta-gaming, but... What do you want to lean your nation toward, so it may influence your decision or event types? you can PM me this if you want to keep it secret from other players.
Paint a spot on the map you want to begin at. This isn't a settlement, just a starting location.

Life Advice / Computers not booting - HELP
« on: September 18, 2015, 03:13:38 am »
Long story short there was an electrician from some company doing renovations in my house. He said he'd only be turning the power off in the bathroom etc etc and the rest would be alright.

15 minutes in. Power cut, my pc is on, then off, naturally. I let him know, he switched the power back on and I left the PC off as I went off to work for the day/night.

Come to use my pc in the morning and it's powering up. No beep. No monitor coming on. No keyboard or mouse power.

I've tried everything, unplugging the mobo and powering on, holding power buttons and every combination of powering up and down. I've unplugged EVERYTHING (except the PSU) and tried powering up piece by piece, and every start up is the same (obviously except when the mobi unplugged).

Fans are running, hard disk spins, extra fans are working, LEDs are on, video card fans spin... Just no pc beep or actual boot. What's broken, and what do I demand this company pay out for?

This is you. You don't know where you came from, or what you are. Your mind is blank,
your memory is nonexistent, you have no senses. You know you can grow and expand, but it will take some experimentation.

Time for a good old land grab - though, with a twist. Rather than more land = more people = more land... players can "share" lands and work together in prosperity, or beat each other senseless. Keep reading.

Each player assumes the role of a civilization. Each player starts with one "Territory" from the four that make up a "Province". Each territory is worth a percentage of output in one province - so if player A holds three territories in Province X and player B holds the other one, player B gets somewhere around 1/4 of the output of that province.

Spoiler: For example (click to show/hide)

What can I do in a turn?
1 Admin Power = +0.02 Development
1 Admin Power = +0.5 Influence
1 Admin Power = +0.2 Army (-0.05 Admin Power per 0.2 in upkeep)

Make up some bullshit policies, politics, intrigue, civil war and ministorylines in Roleplay. Leave the outcome to the GM, and to the GM's dice at your own risk. Creative play will be rewarded.
Move Troops to Home Territory X.
Engage in public diplomacy.
Conspire in PM for secret plans and coalitions.

How do I join?

- Pick a Starting Province (eg, Cities of Snow) (note: You'll be given one single random territory. Multiple players in one province allowed).
- Name your Civilization.
- Name your capital territory. It's typically a city name, but up to you.
- Pick a Civilization Colour.

Dwarves start with a higher industry, but lower agriculture.
Humans start with a balanced town.
Elves start with a higher agriculture, but lower industry.

Rules are likely to change throughout the game to adapt. The logic and math hasn't been tested on large scale and will likely be changed to balance the game (to a tiny degree).

You'll also need access to opening Excel sheets, though I believe there are online tools that can do it in your browser.

...this is gonna go crazy when McUrist master-planners get their teeth in powerpumping their town attributes...
